BLAAAAH!

10/17/08 8:41:03 PM#1

I was checking up on a blog that I recently started to follow and saw an article the author posted on the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion. (Wrath of the Lich King) The blog can be found here: rpgfeed.blogspot.com

In the blog he brings up a few key points that will pretty much spell the end of WoW for me. For those too lazy to read it, I will summarize.

First he goes on to say that the game has had a lack of quality content as of late, and is pretty much ruining the WoW lore by killing off key figures. He also gives some examples.

He then goes on to explain how the dev team seems to be loosing direction since the new Inscription profession is a re-tooled Enchanting, and gives an example of how they could have come up with a better profession, the example being a pretty damn cool one.

Finally he mentions the fact that a large influx of Death Knights are going to hit the game as soon as the expansion comes out, and pretty much overwhelm the population.

I don't really do his article justice, but those are some of the key points.
What do you guys think? We will be killing Arthas in WotLK. Who else is after that? I agree with him 100% that I will be done with Warcraft after I finally see Arthas die. Oh well, I guess it's for the best. Maybe I can get back to my real life.

If anything WotLK will re-invigourate people to sub for a month just to try it out. THAT is one of the reasons why there will be so many Death Knights - because it took Blizzard so long to release expansions that people have alts coming out of their ears.

Now, although some of the listed aspects could hurt MMO's with a smaller population base, I don't think it will effect WoW much at all.  Simply because it's like McDonalds.  Everyone knows its bad for you.  But some people simply cannot get enough of it.

Now...that's not to say that a percentage MAY start to look elsewhere for their next MMO. But that's nothing new, people do that all the time.

When all is said and done:

1)  It's is STILL easy to pick up and learn.   Your Grandmother (if she's alive) would love it.

2)  It's STILL bright and vibrant in colours.

3)  It STILL plays on low end machines (tho they seem to have raised the bar a little bit since launch).

4)  It's STILL WoW.  Period.  Some people have grown to love it so much that if nothing changes very much then that is fine for them.  If you took cooking and gave it a new name people would STILL level it up.  Some people love WoW for being WoW.

WoW died for me when they announced this expansion.  Raid grind till you get the top gear so you can start all over again with the new expansion.  What bothered me most was knowing that many players will not get to see all of the end game content of the last expansion before the next one comes out.  Only the upper guilds will have gotten to see the content, rest would have to wait till they could get the gear in future instances and go back to the older ones.  Same happened for Naxx when BC came out.

i just resubbed for the expansion and patch. And the quality of this patch is top notch, and WOTLK also has top notch quality. WoW is moving on with the lore from Warcraft 3, heroes are vanquishing villains and in the end, all of them will be dead, or arthas will be the last one. I agree with the death knight sentiment though.

While I don't play WoW anymore (Tbc killed it for me).

Both my brother and my sister both resubbed for the patch and are totally dissapointed with the patch.

With WotLK I strongly believe that WoW will start to have a steady decline of people playing it since Arthus is supposed to be the be all end all in bosses ( i know there are others but none are as cool as him).

If it wasn't for the 40 to 25 man raid cap decision I would probably still be playing WoW but to be honest the only reason I started playing WoW was to fight Arthus and illidian since I was a big WC rts fan.

Now that these lore bosses will be dead I see a lot of people moving on.

With the lore not being as interesting and the game being on the old side people will start leaving and the game will be too ugly to play graphics wise to catch on with the up and coming new MMO players.

Every MMO goes through this cycle, happened with UO, EQ and DAoC back before WoW.

It depends on how fast people power-grind to 80 and start grinding for rep, resil, items, and new mounts. If they burn through it as fast as they did when burning crusade came out they'll be back to where they were 2 months ago.

Whilst I do think WoW's time should be coming to an end by now unfortunately I don't think it's going to be happening any time soon.

Until somebody release a very well made, finished and engrossing game to replace it there will always be enough people resubbing or starting to play WoW for the first time for it hold onto it's dominance.

It's a shame that no developer has been able to delver the goods by now that can put a major dent in it's subscriber base.

think this is more likely to cause a resurge of popularity- a new class, significant pvp content? This guy just sounds like he's burned out of WoW. (takes some people way too long..)

I have returned to WoW for the expansion  after breaking with LOTRO.  They have shaken things up with a major patch this past  with features list that Rings has.  My bet is that even the gung ho WAR boys are going to want to compare their siege weapons with WoW  new expansion siege weapons.

We heard the exact same thing with the Burning Crusade expansion, and it turned out to boom WotLK's subscribers.

Fact of the matter is that WoW has over 10 million subscribers, there will always be people who won't be pleased with the expansions content no matter what content the expansion offers. one blog is hardly a representation of the general WoW playerbase.

I am sure at first they will get a surge of players but after 2 months I am sure things will slowly decline because lets face it, nothing lasts forever.

All goods and services have their life span. WoW will end one day. No one can't say now when this day is coming.

But i dont think it will be with WTLK. I don't see any reason for people leaving the game they love when a new content is added, but a radical change in the game play. And as far as i know it is not going to happen with WTLK.

May be i'm wrong.

I've been thinking about wow's future and all that every since i started playing the game in 2004.  Since wow is based on the rts warcraft series, then all they need to do to produce more lore is to make warcraft 4.

Or they could take the route of AQ and sunwell, and just make up lore that fits really well in the story.

Either way, its blizzard.  They have their shit together more so then any other gaming company.

If THAT were the case, it MIGHT be the ONE thing that would make ME want to leave WoW, and I'm one of the four year "veterans."  I certainly do not want WoW to implement any of the crap that made WAR feel like a PQ/scenario grind in a soulless game world with no personality.  I like my "grind" the flavor that it is right NOW, t y v m.

But in all seriousness....

EVERY expansion to EVERY MMO that I have ever played, always has some people that don't like it, and have tons of complaints about it.  However, they don't seem to ever reflect the majority opinion.  (With the exception of SWG NGE...pretty much everyone DID hate THAT one.)

Oh....by the way....you all don't know for SURE that we will be killing Arthas.  We're all assuming that, really.  Yes...he's part of a raid instance, so we naturally assume we will get to kill him.   But I have seen a couple of interviews with the game developers where they were a bit.....sketchy....about answering that direct question.  Personally, I think Blizzard has some things up their sleeves that we don't know about.  People under-estimate the creativity of that team, in my opinion.  I don't think they have run out of surprises for us.

And regarding the game lore....

There are plenty of "bad guys" besides Arthas that have not been killed or even SEEN in game yet.  You all need to watch some of the video interviews from BlizzCon.  They talk about this.

I have been playing games from Blizzard since Warcraft I and Diablo (and the ensuing series that came from both of them).  That company  has a reputation for coming up with little "surprises" and whatnot.  I think, myself, before determining that this game will "end the WoW era," will just wait and ride on the Blizzard "wave" and see where it takes me.

WoW won't really decline until after they've released their new MMO, but that won't be for many years.

We don't even have a release date on SC2 or D3.

I do think if they raise the level cap again with the expansion after WOTLK, they will have to do something to help new players catch up to speed. The new buddy system seems to be a step in the right direction.

Any new or returning player to WOW, send me a PM for some help getting started.

10/18/08 11:21:35 AM#21

I think there will always be players getting bored with WOW, or players that quit because they hate some change that Blizzard did.  But look at the top pc game sales.. the WOW battlechest is still a bestseller.  New people replace those that get burned out.

Killing off lore characters?  You do realize that is taking a very short-term view of who we are killing off.  Arthas is a major charcter in the W3 world, but there are still a ton of more powerful beings in the lore to kill off.  Also Blizzard IS warcraft, so they can easily write new lore and show the next chapter.  I think up until this point, Blizzard has been really cleaning up the old lore, but who says they can't create entertaining new lore going forward using new figures.

I don't know about the quality of content comment.  The quests in Wrath are much better than the ones in BC. and the ones in BC were better than vanilla.  Considering WOW became the beast it is because of 1-60 leveling.. that says alot.   multi-player mount escape quests, bombing run quests etc.

Inscription is not enchanting.  Enchanting allowed you to add stats to certain peices of equipment.  Inscription allows you to adjust the way your skills and abilities work.   WIth Enchanting, I could add +15 INT to my bracers.. with inscription, I can increase the duration of my moonfire dot by casting starfire.  Both features allow you to personalize your character, but in very different ways.

I think everyone will have a death knight alt.. but really, don't most players have an 'alt' of nearly every character already.  I know I have every class above lvl 40, and some of them like druids and shaman, I have 2.  Death Knights will be just like that.  Everyone will play through the starter zone, and some will get to outlands.  But do you think everyone is going to abandon their level 70 character to go back to lvl 55 while everyone else is questing/leveling in the new zones?   Death Knights are a new class, but you are going to have to play through a lot of old content and will be behind everyone else as they get to 80.  I think for a few weeks after Wrath launches, DKs will 'overwhelm' Outlands.. but I think in 2 months, you'll see less then 10% of level 80s being deathknights.  People want to see the new content and get to the new endgame more than they want to play a new class through old content.

I can't say what everyone else is going to do, but my deathknight is going through the start zone, then he is going to outlands and only getting played when he is at full rested exp.  The vast majority of my time will be getting my main characters to 80 and get my 10man guild into Nax.

Who is after Arthas?  The emerald dream? the dragonflight? the ancients? the nameless ones?  There are a ton of characters in wow lore who were more powerful than Arthas.

Warcraft lore continued with WoW. Key characters will die, just as they did in the RTS games.

The Inscription profession is just fine. How is it a "re-tooled Enchating"? Enchanting increases stats on gear, Inscription gives additional effects to spells and talents on the character. The basics are kinda the same but the results are very different.

Yeah, and there was a huge influx of Shamans and Paladins at the beginning of TBC whgen they the other factions got them. A month later they were just another class with normal populations. There will be a big influx of DKs at the start because people will try the new class to see how it is but the DK population will even out.

There is so much more to Warcraft than just Arthas. He may be a fan favorite bu in the grand scheme he is just an emo loser. Also, for you or this pathetic blogger to think that Arthas is the pinnacle of Warcraft villains then you must have started playing with WC3.

But yes, it's still WoW and that might be enough to keep it going... At least for some. I know that once I kill Arthas, I will be done with the whole Warcraft thing in general.
