I see all these threads of what game has let you down to I cant wait for the next big thing. In my opinion our expectations of these games have out stripped  what  Devs can offer these days. I think we are about a year or so away till a truly new type of MMO will make us say "WOW" ( pun intended ).

I just think right now technologically we are just in saturation of what can be offered. More than a coincedence in why all the games look so simliar. All the games seem to play basically the same. Im hoping Im wrong and the  next cool MMO is right around the corner, but the player base seems now all to be searching  and waiting while these new games coming out are not simply meeting the current expectations of what players want in a  new MMO right now.

Honestly, I've been thinking about this. I just don't want to log into any mmo right now. I canceled WAR today cause I just couldn't bring myself to grind up the levels. I even went on to a server where Destruction was getting bonus xp. I thought, well, I'll really try to read the quests this time and get into the lore, but I just couldn't do it. I quit after about 15 min.

I haven't loged into LOTRO for a few months now (I have a 3 month sub) and I don't want to.

I tried AOC (and honestly didn't have that many bugs that others did) but I found I was just following arrows around to gain xp. It was just boring.

I re-started Vanguard and was playing for a while and enjoying it (14 days free), but I haven't loged on in a week.

I agree. I think, at least to me, everything seems the same. Maybe it is time for a break.

I don't know about outgrown but certainly for me mmos have been an utter disappointment. Since the release of WOW there has been no real mmo who has captured the masses attention. Guild Wars has been my main game for the past 3 years and to many it isn't considered a mmo. Even that game is getting dull because for most veterans all there is left to do is fill out your Hall of Monuments for Guild Wars 2. I tried mmos such as Lotro,AOC and WAR and all have been good for a month of gameplay and thats it. I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2 and SW:TOR mmos but those games are in the making and the wait might be a decent one.

Though I will find some redemption in games such as Fallout 3, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and Dragon Age. So developers can copy eachother and make people pay monthly fees all they want. I simply just won't buy them until someone makes a good mmo again.

1 year from now? In the list of current MMo in development, none is a groundbreaking and innovative game.

I doubt we will ever see a true sandox MMO ever, it yields more money to create artificial grind and rewards to keep players hooked.

People are less interested in them due to not get any good ones if they would go back to sandbox types like Ac,EQ  and SWG there wouldnt be a problem with intrest. But once they get those college degrees and see all those charts of what THEY THINK PEOPLE WANT ,they dont listen to what we the consumers tell them. The people who want dumbed down games are all playing WOW.There are plenty of us who want a seamless world, sandbox,no instanced,no flashing icons above NPC quests persons head,no hand holding linear path to finish a quest to keep a WELL DESIGNED MMORPG heavy in subscription numbers. To paraphrase from a movie.

I think game companies are trying to appeal to all the gaming crowd in general. This imo is the major downfall of them all as this is an unachheavable goal. For example all the games post wow have tried to be pvp/pve oriented split down the middle. however all the while they cant focus on PvE for the PvE'ers, or PvP for the PvP'ers. If the companies would pick a niche and make the game for them we would see better games for us all. I am envious of the PvP'ers as they are finally getting their niche game in darkfall. I really hope it is a great game for the PvP crowd because they wont come to a PvE game and complain about how bad the PvP is in a PvE focused game.

Not exactly how I would have worded it, but you still answered for me also.  I vote yes to seamless sandbox worlds and no to WoW knock-offs.

Sorry that I went about it in a round about way.I just think as many of us as there is there would be a market for a sandbox game even though we came from playing different older games that were designed like that .I enjoyed the first KOTOR even though it was console like.A MMORPG made like that and SWG might be pretty good if they change it to open world.I am just really looking for a good game regardless whether itis fantasy or sci fi

This is the exact same way I've been feeling lately, ever since swg went NGE, I've been dissapointed with every game I'd try. I've pretty muched played or trialed every single MMO out there, Ive pretty much been down the whole game list, going game by game to try and find something I can stick with for more than a week! Currently I've just been running around in tabula rasa, but I'm finding myself logging in less and less now too. All my gaming routine seems to be  nowadays is just log in, run around in circles for 10 minutes, log out. I just wonder how much different things would be if pre-cu swg never existed! it's like they gave us a preview of how much better MMOs can be, then just took it away to replace it with what to expect out of every single upcoming MMO there's been. I'm still searching for a game that will at the very least be fun, been thinking of trying PSU or Vanguard But it really doesnt seem worth all the downloading. Fallen Earth seems to be my only solice in waiting. And hopefully there will be some good news on the 21st, Im hoping thats not a major let down as well, they really have some high expectations to fill....ESPECIALLY for another stars wars MMO. IMO swg pre-cu is a damn hard title to live up to.

I think it's more that mmorpgs are lagging behind player expectations.

Not that our expectations are too high, the developers seem unable to deliver what we want.

Most of people's expectations are too unrealistically high, the developers technology seem unable to deliver what we want.

FIXED!

One day people will  figure out why we see MMORPG the way they are today. I mean blaming devlopers only proofs what I said. And I really find it amazing to continue to see people complain in such a way without understanding that DEVELOPERS DO LISTENEN, perhaps in many cases not to you or me but they do listen to the masses, shame it is for sure, but simply keep in mind that tech is what is holding the games back right now, sure we have several more options back then, but we need to take into account that many things back then where not great implimented even though allot of us could enjoy it back then the bar is allot higher now. Again one day some people will understand this.

I think maybe the OP is right. There are more themes that can quite probably be done but when so many people are crammed on a server maybe it is limited what can be developed.
