KOTOR MMO Reveal Coming This Month
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:30 AM on October 3, 2008

According to two separate, British sources, BioWare and Lucasart's Knights of the Old Republic MMO will finally have its first public showing later this month. CVG say it's "set to be 'officially' unveiled later this month", while a writer with British newspaper The Daily Star let slip that they're off "next month to file an exclusive report on the game". Promising. All that's left to do in the meantime is wait, and while waiting, build yourself an intricate series of overblown expectations that the final product can never hope to live up to!

No-one can be sure until news is released but let's hope that it combines as much open play and open landscapes as possible with the rich content structures for which Bioware is known.

If you listen carefully you can hear the SOE viral marketing machine spinning up.

Lets see;

SWG devs go pretty much silent on the Oboards.

DM bails and heads for DC

Blix bails and heads for DC

Finally the anouncement of "free server transfers" and in a few months time, the development schedule has not been decided on yet.

Yep, sounds about right for Kotor to be announced.

I think SOE losing a monopoly on the StarWars IP for MMOs can only be a good thing for everyone.

You know, our whole country used to have just one telephone service provider, and not that long ago.  They were just downright nasty to people from coast to coast.  Price gouging, horrible customer service, outright hostility or indifference to their customers.  (I'm sure there were some exceptions, but this was the tendency.)  Then one day the government just decided that having a monopoly on telephones was a bad thing, so they made it illegal.  Well competitors sprang up overnight.  Suddenly, prices started coming down and customer service began to improve.  Amazing...

Yeah, I like the idea of another StarWars MMO very much, for a bunch of reasons.

Yeah, I'm old enough to remember the AT&T breakup altho they're up to some of their old ways again.  (AT&T buying out Southern Bell)

Is it a monopoly SOE is losing or an IP?  I could be wrong but just adding up the small clues.

Just do not expect it to be similar to SWG pre-cu,cu or even NGE, no deep crafting, no player citys or houses...it will be all story and combat, they said they are not making a world simulator, so basicaly yeah just like Kotor but online, which for me is just blah kotor was an awesome single player game but does not fit as an MMO at all in my opinion, SWG is the only MMO i even cared to play beause it was so much different than single player offline games.

I'm actually fine with all of that. If it's a Star Wars game that isn't tainted by SOE I'll play it. Of course I'd prefer a pre-cu type game but I've come to accept that nobody is ever going to recreate that game.

While I agree,. one should not expect Pre-CU SWG, I have no idea where you get the information that there will be no Player Cities or Houses and how deep/not deep the crafting system will be.

They said they are not making a world-simulator, sort of, but how does that relate to housing and crafting?

I'm with pdxgeek on this one, I will play anything KotOR sight-unseen just because it's BioWare and I know it will not be sandbox   However, like I said it's BioWare and I know it should be a well made work of art.

It certainly could be interpreted that way. I'll have to agree with you on this.

BTW anyone know if DC is going the RMT route?

I hope your right its high time we heard some more info about this, however I would never trust any gossip that comes out of a cheap tabloid like the daily star.

I dont think it will be a KOTOR mmo i think it will be star wars and that they will bank on a KOTOR single RP somethime in the future. But i think without a doubt not to start any fight so dont start a fight just saying i believe it wont be KOTOR-O.

I think it will be something clonewars-bby or after endor. And just maybe faintly something around the KOTOR timeframe but not that area exactly. But im guessing it will be clone wars-BBY era.

Not to say i like that era i would love it to be GCW era or right after endor blew up but beggars cant be choosers.

Here.  Games For Windows interview with Rich Vogel, Gordon Walton, and James Vogel.  It''s a couple of years old, but those are the guys at the top and they're still there on the same projects.

www.1up.com/do/newsStory

Specifically:

"GFW: And what of player-created content? Player-built cities, player-run businesses, that sort of thing?

RV: There'll definitely be an economy in our game, like WoW. But is our game going to be a simulation? No. Our game is an entertainment experience.

JO: If we're going to create immersive, epic stories that are believable, that really goes against having a simulation-type world. Those two things don't go together well."

Well prepared to be busted. I can say with some certianty that the hate Bioware feels for not only the SWG Vets, but the whole Sandbox concept runs pretty deep...Think of Anikin at the Tuskin camp, without the remorse later.

No sandbox, No Pre Cu, Pre NGE or anything similar....and look for a big ol perma ban for any vet that dares open their mouths on the forum.

While playing NWN from Bioware many very heated arguements went on in the forums and I do not remember any perma bans or even temp bans on posters.  Warnings were given over language and cautions given to calm the tempers down, but no bannings.  Same when NWN2 came out. The game was released by Obsidian, but the forums were hosted by Bioware.  I may not be interested in this game if it lacks the crafting and openeness of a sandbox, but I can say that Bioware does not run (ruin) their forums like SOE has and does.

Many players love the KotOR series and this game, if it is a KotOR based game, is aimed at them (lucky bastages!).  Without the depth of crafting and openess that SWG originally had, I will have to skip this.  If it has that level of crafting, openess of maps, and allows players true freedom of character, then I will sink in teeth and lock my jaws and call the game home.  Otherwise, gratz to those the game is tailored for.

Doesn't matter to me which time period of Star Wars the game is based on, as they all can offer the same gameplay.  Might not be an Empire in earlier time periods, but there were factions and that lends for RP and PvP.  And in the earlier time periods, less mass production of items by large companies, so could lend very well to in depth crafting.

Nothing is written in stone, basically still rumors at this stage, so we have no idea what will be released if they are releasing a Star Wars based MMO.  No matter if it is a game I will play or not, will be happy if they do release one and others enjoy it.  Untill they release another SW based game that offers similar gameplay to SWG, then guess I will be content with the forums here and remember what a truly unique and amazing game could be like.

That's the sense I get from everything I read and know already about Bioware and the KOTOR series.  Oh well.  I figure I'll play it for about 3 months before adding it to the mmo discard pile of game titles that all thought they could do WoW better than Blizzard.

Do you have any facts or links to reinforce your statement: "I can say with some certianty that the hate Bioware feels for not only the SWG Vets"? Or is it something that you 'hope' rather than 'know'?

Erm other way around.

A former "baby Bell" bought out AT&T, and started using their name.  The old Bell monopoly has been recreated less the Qwest (formerly USWest) part of it.

With the notable exception of long distance, the old Ma Bell is pretty much back in place.  There are still independent local operating companies scatttered about the country (Verizon for example), particularly in rural areas.

What SOE is on the verge of losing is a MMO monopoly on the Star Wars IP.  Lucas Arts supposedly wouldn't allow "classic" SWG, or launching the NGE as "SWG II".  They wanted the original game gone, for whatever reason.  Probably because they weren't happy with the original SWG because it wasn't an FPS type game froom the start...some sort of Jedi Outcast online thing.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
