There are no perfect men in this world, only perfect intentions. |
Both AoC and WAR are horrible so I guess it's either time to wait for something else to release or go back to an older MMO...but which one. I guess the choices are: 1. Vanguard
What do you guys think? |

#4, but not the one run by Sony

If you don't like WAR, then you're basically screwed. None of the other choice are worth anyone's time. Wait for November and buy GTA4 for the PC. |

Vanguard started open free trial 2 weeks ago, and since their 6th major patch it has gotten some decent facelift, it could be worth checking out. WoW and LOTR ofcourse coming up with new patches, which one is more boring I'm not one to say =) Could be interesting timesink both of them, but if you're a new to either, it takes half a year before you're in the end of the linear content. Eve is getting walking in stations patch/addon soon, before the year is out, so it could get more interesting. Currently in mmorpg.com Eve forums are flooded with manuals how to get into it better. Of course its a bit niche game type, but those manuals really get you going better than the tutorial. I've decided also give War and AoC some time to mature, jumping into leaking ship is just a bit meh. You could consider some even older ones too, EQ2? Also free trial, tho level limited. Its grafics at least are up to date, and its quite sweet game if ya like PVE and nature. You could try DAoC, given its not on its golden age anymore, its thriwing on. First 4 addons come free with the trial, and even without the latest grafic engine that ya have to pay for, its grafics are extraordinary good. Serious alternative for War atleast, and its definetly mature candy. AC dinged its 100th patch/addon, it has also changed to be more easily to get into. Darkfall has started its closed beta invitations, step by step they're moving into more people and towards open beta, but thats ofcourse another serious UO niche game not all may like.
![]() WHO - Online currently WoW - Online since launch. LOTR-O - Online 06-07 EVE - Online 07-08 DAoC - Online 01-08 Also played : AC, EQ, EQ2, DDO, Cabal, D&L, GW, LA2, Ryzom Shaiya, SWG Waiting : DAoC2 |

I am pretty much in the same boat... I tried out the newer stuff, and wasn't tempted to stay. The MMOGs I am truly looking forward to are still a long way off. I figure since just about everything is a WoW clone with a few "new" twists, I might as well continue playing WoW for now... ------------------------- |

Heh, I never left(Anarchy Online) but I haven't had the chance to try WAR yet as it's still in the mail. |

A good king. A great king. But not greatly good. |
While waiting for the WoW expansion to come out, because AoC and WAR are such utter letdowns for me, I fired up my old CoV account to mess around with the character creator. Been playing for almost 2 months now, and if you take it for what it is, find a good VG to group with...man I'll tell ya, good times! I can't believe I'm not tired of it yet either, but they've added just enough to the game now to keep me from going insane from repetition. But when you think about it, that's what all MMOs are about really...rinse and repeat. To answer your question from the list you provided; if you want to play a game now, go LoTRO as it is a very polished and enjoyable product. If you can wait a month or 2, go for WoW. I also played EVE Online for quite a while as well. If you have the patience to get into this vastly complex game, it can be very rewarding.

Vanguard is totally boring and pointless. LOTR is the same but more polished. People say the story is good but actually I find a book far more interesting. WoW is.....well everyone knows what WoW is like. Go and join the billions of other bored people if you like. At least you will have lots of people to talk to which can help to keep you occupied. SWG......well thats a true sign of desperation. You've already made your mind up there anyway. EVE is the only good quality product and even then the only way you will get any fun out of that game is if you enjoy fighting other players as its a PvP game. If you dont join a decent corporation and kick others peoples arses then you're gonna get bored. Basicly there are no decent mmos around. You're just gonna have to settle for playing the garbage that is on offer. Join the club. Mind you I am currently enjoying WAR because although its the same as all the other shit at least it doesnt actually look shit (Vanguard.....cough cough), its got plenty of humour and colour to it, it feels lively to play and I can pit myself against other players which is kind of the point of playing games online anyway. Sorry but I'm afraid that WAR is the best thing on offer at the moment. |

Hey man go to Ryzom.com and DL the Client! th game is free to play untill the end of October at least so it's worth a try! The game is andbox style like SWG was Pre-CU and the crafting system is pretty complex. |

I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way. I went back to LoTRO. They have added a some new areas, quests and what not so my major gripe that it was to hard to solo past 40 has mostly been fixed. LoTRO has pumped out more free content than any game I have ever played (except for maybe other Turbine games) The player base is one of the most mature out there so there is far less drama and i am not constantly getting spammed by gold sellers. It still suffers from feeling completely lonely like no one else is playing because you hardly see anyone, no one chats, you can spam the /LFF channel all day long and not get a group - but I think its the next best thing. It's still too group oriented which normally would not be a bad thing but since no one in this day and age wants to group it leaves me with a quest log full of group quests I can never get done. I just can't go back to WoW. It was fun for a while but just remember , you will buy Lich King, level up your ten levels in a month (or less) your first green drop will be better than your purple raid gear and then you spend another year grinding the same old crap waiting for the new XP pack. No thanks. |

Before WOW, there were MMORPG''s. After WOW there were online solo single RPG''s. |
I'd go back to EQ, but the problem with MMO's is they age like old girlfriends. |

Find a good old school UO shard. Those are usually fun for a while. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Try Guild Wars if you enjoy a game that requires you to think and got the probably best PvP in any game at the moment. Additionally once you've payed for the game you won't need to pay any monthly fee. |

I don't get why people keep on putting down Star Wars Galaxies. Its still one of the best games going today. Right now I'm on a break from the game, but I'm excited to return when they add "The Battle of Echo Base"(from Empire Strikes Back) in to the game. With all thats said I do hope their is a new Star Wars mmorpg in the works. SWG is getting really old and dated. I know alot of people hope its a Knights of the Old Republic game, but I'm sorta hoping its The Clone Wars. I think a Star Wars mmorpg should always stick with the movie., Although I do like KOTOR, I just rather see it come back as an offline XBOX 360 game. In conclusion out of your whole list, in my opinion SWG is the only one that is playable. LOTR is ok, Vanguard was boring, same with EVE, and as for WOW I don't get why people like it so much. Yeah its an ok game, but it just never WOW'ed me. When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there! |

A couple of things I've learned from my time in Eve is that MMOs don't have to be new to be good so long as the devs continue to support them in an intelligent way, and MMOs don't need a gazillion subs to be good either. So, don't feel bad about going to an older game if that's what you like. Hell, even the big text-based games I played waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the early 90s (mostly Realms of Despair) are still going strong. |
