Been fine all day and had to leave for a bit so decided to turn pc off=/. get back and...

goes through the patcher fine, then i get to the server screen, i accept the eula and code of conduct then along the right it says "searching for allies" and boom. knocks me down to desktop with a "critical error: authentication failed- program will terminate"

any ideas? already sent a support ticket to mythic, says can take up to 24 hours to respond, hoping to not have to wait that long

thanks in advance

been happening to me, my gf and my bro since last thurs. This is getting stupid.. everyday i have to at least twice batter the key in repeatedly till i get a Registration Confirmation instead a failed... 4 times confirmed on me and my gf's and 3 times on my bro's.

My gf's has went back of again today. I'm fed up with this...

We all got our codes from Direct2Drive UK... its now saying the codes are registered as the problem and not this email isn't linked to any account. I'm pretty sure this is to do with EU website account system on its webpage, everytime they do something, add password recovery, add account management, everything goes shitz up.

I believe that all my problems may be to do with BT throttling broadband speeds at certain times of day. I download at lot at night when the speeds are high so maybe im on a list or something but between 5-10pm my speeds are throttled daily to 30-40kb. After 1am i can get 1000kb...

I think somehow this is affecting me logging on to WAR, maybe the port used is being throttled and me and my gf cant get on... but it i solved it however by resetting my modem, every day since last Thursday i have had this issue but it took me a long time to think to reset my modem lol.

Anyway i might be a millions miles off on this but those having similar probs try it.

Well, BT have done a full check, no problems thier end, WoW and LOTRO still work fine, yet WAR gets a critical error on the server select screen during the "locating battles" server hunt.

WARs customer support havn't got back to me, but since its run by the dependably crap GOA, that doesn't surprise me. Full reinstall / patch / file check and it's still the same.

Any other ideas ?

For me its to do with my BT hub... I can get logged on if i reset it and relog.

Other than that I'm ok now so i can only wish you the best of luck. Can be so frustrating, I have never had problems with any other MMO like this, EQII, Vanguard, WoW, LOTRO, even AoC.

The problem still occurs for me when i log on after 5pm but resetting seems to work.

Guys, the "Critical Error" is 99% of the time due to your firewall, router, what-have-you, stopping the connection to the server.

When the game doesn't get access to the servers b/c of firewall or any other reason (usually after patching b/c the firewall no longer recognizes the exe), once the engine has loaded, it kicks out that "Critical error". It's all due to your firewall, alt-tab out, or close the game otherwise, give your firewall permission to allow the game to connect, and the problem is solved.

It happens to me every time there is any small patch, or the game can't connect to the servers for whatever reason, and has been happening since early beta. For whatever reason that is how the client handles not being able to connect to the servers for whatever reason, many people have brought it to the attention of Mythic and it is intentional.

i get this still during times of 4pm to 11pm and as i said try pulling out your power cord on the BT hub, leaving 30 secs, then reconnect... once all lights are on load up WAR... if still doesn't work check your firewall settings.

I've actually cancelled with BT as there internet has been nothing short of rubbish for the 18 months iv had it. Going to Virgin Media where i will get 20meg for less than BT's advertised 8meg... (only even got close to that in the early hours of morning...).

You know you could be onto something. Since the games release it must have patched and downloaded a new EXE about 10 times. And this could certainly cause havoc with some firewalls if they're detecting a change, blocking the connection but not reporting or giving the user a chance to update permissions.

What firewall are you people using?

To wank, or not to wank. The ultimate MMO sacrifice.

Every time your exe's update you need to re-add them to yoru firewall.  In most firewalls even if it says that it's allready on the list.

Ignorance is not bliss, but it;s sure handy to blame it on the game isn't it.

Seriously, it's your firewalls, either software firewalls, or hardware firewalls in routers and such will cause the "Critical Error". There may be other causes of it, but I have personally never seen them.

That's probably why the game will work the 2nd time you load it up. The first time after any patch the firewall is not letting it through b/c it doesn't recognize the program, but the 2nd time it will let it through b/c you either gave it permission to do so, or it recognizes it as a non-threat. This has been happening for months now, it first started maybe 2 or 3 months before they started "guild beta".

There's really no way around it, except to alt-tab out while the game is loading up and give the firewall permission to allow the connection (this must be done before the character-select screen comes up and starts trying to connect to the server), or after patching don't load up the game and manually go through the steps of giving the firewall the proper permission to allow the connection.

There is a 72 page thread on this on WHA. It's happening to both NA and Euro players, some with and some without routers, some with hardware and software firewalls turned off, and a bunch of other different variables. Some people have resolved the problem with workarounds, others haven't been able to. I guess the best thing to do is look through the thread and see if there is something you can try to fix this.
