Don''t Panic!!!! |
Racism, by its simplest definition, is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. People with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their racial groups. In the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits, or get preferential treatment. Racial discrimination typically points out taxonomic differences between different groups of people, even though anybody can be racialised, independently of their somatic differences. According to the United Nations conventions, there is no distinction between the term racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, the reason you don't see "white entertainment networks" or "white pride day" is mainly because Whites are the dominate race / ethnic group in the U.S. Everything is more or less geared toward them by default. All other ethnic groups are typically expected to conform to the dominate culture historically speaking and the U.S. is no exception.

"Adjusts ponytails and pulls the lollipop out of my mouth" |
My friends son started a new school last year, he is a shy kid so it was already hard enough for him to start over in the 4th grade not knowing anyone at the school. My friend found out 2 weeks before school that the school had a uniform policy, the children had to wear red, white or blue polo shirts and Kahki or navy slacks. Since she was getting a late start on school shopping due to the move, all the local stores had available left in stock were the white shirts. On the first day of school he realized he was the only child of his race in his class, and no one wanted to talk to him with his light blonde hair pale skin and big blue eyes. Then the comments started kids started telling him he better stop wearing that shirt to school or he was going to get it. The kids were calling him "whitey", "albino", "cracker" and "kkk". He told his mom he didn't want to wear those shirts anymore, but she told him they had no other choice because the stores were sold out of the other colors, He told his mom he didn;t want to go to school because no one liked him, he told his mom that people were mean at his school, and she brushed it off as him being in a new school and it would take time for him to adjust. She assured him he would make friends in time. Well then he went back to school and 5 other kids jumped him and beat him with their belts, and kicked him in the face and stomache several times on the side of the buidling. All because he was a white boy wearing a white shirt and for no other reason. Apparently at his school the red shirts symbolize the "bloods" the blue shirts symbolized the "crypts" and the white shirts symbolized the "KKK" . This 9 year old child had no idea about any of this nonsense and was forced into a situation he had no control over. His family did not even move to the US until the 1990's and his ancestors never had slaves. His mother moved him to another school and is now trying to move from the area all together because of the threats they have received living there. She received comments from neighbors that she" should have known better than to send him to school in a white shirt" and that all the kids around there know that already. She did not receive any sympathy even after her child was beaten, and was told that being the only "white people" in the neighborhood makes them a target . Why people think this only happens to other races is beyond me, Equal rights does not mean better rights. There is no reason why anyone should receive "special treatment" simply because of the color of their skin. This is not okay no matter where you come from, who your parents are or how dark your tan is. I do not think there should be "black colleges" or "white colleges" or funds for anyone due to their race. All that does is create more racism. This took place in a Dallas County suburb school district . |

Want to know what Racism is? Racism is the fact that her in Florida Public schools have MLK's birthday off but no President's day. I am sorry but MLK is not more important then a day to honor all of our past Presidents. That is racism. |

No it's Racist. When I went to school in New York we had the President's Birthdays off from school. I moved down to Florida in 9th grade and that went away and instead we had MLK's Birthday off. Only because this is the South and they had to honor MLK in order to not be called racist. But in fact doing so is racist. If they can only have one or the other off it should be President's day. |

I attended a seminar a long time ago about racism and how its institutionalized, etc. I was pretty left minded then and this fit right into that type of thiking. At any rate, they broke it down to a formula: Racism = Racial Prejudice + Power Racial Prejudice is just applying some kind of stereotype to a group of people of a particular race, usually something that is at least not a positive. Power is one race having control and actively maintaining control over other races. They argued that since White people are the majority in the US that they had the power, and that racial prejudice is inherent in everyone. Also they argued that minorities can't be racist since they are not in power. I hear this argument alot these days in the Obama camp (not to argue politics) and a lot of the lefty media. I don't think its as endemic as the seminar would have you believe. Sure people may all have racial prejudice, but people also want to be successful, so why pick somone who is less qualified for a particular position just because of race for eaxmple? Unless you have some ulterior motive... How you act towards other people defines how people view you, the more you can relate to others the less things like racial prejudice matter.
