Asking for help on the internet is like asking a swarm of bees why they are stinging you!

tech.msn.com/news/articlecnet.aspx

Quoted from that link:

This has to be the weirdest and saddest crime-of-virtual-passion story I've come across.

Kimberly Jernigan -- a 33-year-old woman from North Carolina -- was apparently distraught after her online relationship with a 52-year-old man from Claymont, Del., came to an end.

The pair apparently met through the online community Second Life and began a virtual relationship. The two finally met in reality several months ago, and the alleged victim ended the relationship, sending Jernigan into a downward spiral.

In early August, Jernigan allegedly drove to the victim's Pennsylvania workplace and attempted to kidnap him at gunpoint, according to local news station CBS3.com. When she was unsuccessful, according to the report, she returned two weeks later to track down the victim's Delaware address, and posed as a postal worker to do so. After four days of searching, authorities said she found the man's residence in the Whitney Presidential Towers on the 7100 block of Society Drive in Claymont.

On August 21, police said, Jernigan broke into the unnamed victim's apartment with a Taser, a pair of handcuffs, a BB gun, her dog, and a roll of duct tape. He wasn't there, so she waited. When the virtual ex arrived home he saw what looked like a laser beam projecting on his chest. He immediately fled the apartment and contacted the Newcastle County Police.

Police said that when they arrived, they found Jernigan's dog, Gogi, bound with duct tape in the victim's bathtub. Jernigan's reason for gagging her pooch -- "he was making too much noise." The dog was said to be uninjured, but the ASPCA is looking into possible charges of animal cruelty.

Approximately an hour after the incident, authorities in Maryland spotted Jernigan's vehicle at a rest stop on I-95. She was taken into custody after a brief struggle. Jernigan is currently facing charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary, and aggravated menacing, CBS3 said.

What's the lesson here, kiddies? Keep your virtual relationships virtual and don't bring it into the real world or some innocent animal may be harmed in the process ...

Wow.  That is seriously messed up.  Some people definately shouldn't be allowed to have computers.  I honestly wonder what made her snap though.  She seems to be a crazy person as is from this story, but she really did go well beyond crazy with the stalking and posing as someone else to get information.  Glad she was caught.  Feel bad for the guy though.

Very odd. See, that's why I won't even consider doing any kind of virtual relationship online. For the most part, it's just plain weird.

First read about this incident in another forum and yes Second Life has nothing to do with it. That sort of thing is happening in real life as well.

Eh? So you can name me another example of a woman breaking into a guys house with a BB gun (with a laser sight on it apparently), a taser, some duct tape and her dog? Then using the duct tape on the dog, leaving it in the bath tub and getting the hell out of there? And then getting punished by the ASPCA for what she did to the dog on top of what she did to the guy? Cause I'll be darned impressed if you can.

I'm not saying Second Life created this kind of crazy. But it is a breeding ground for this kind of crazy.

Okay let me put it this way.

Online games are just another way to meet socially, I met more crazies in rl drunken idiots in pubs, gangs of kids who throw bricks at your windows, who tie dogs to fireworks or drag a bag of kittens around behind a motorbike, rapists who stalk lone women getting of buses, date rape drugs.

Now if you believe that online life and sl breeds more crazies than your local town ?? I REALLY want to come live in your town because it would be so nice not to have to lock my doors.

Let me tell you a little story, my wife who I met 12 years ago, we had a wonderful life, both of us into many of the same things rpg, scifi, computers, we had loads of so called rl friends we ran rpg meets, we went to live action and made many many so called good friends, my wife was diagnosed with leukeamia 10 years ago and within 6 months all those friends disapeared.. we saw them in town and they couldn't even look us in the eye..

Now we have friends online from yahoo and online games that have lasted 10 years who know of my wifes illness who don't pitty her but treat her as an equal, we are in the uk but about 20 friends have come visit from america over the years.

We also have (counted them) 8 couples we know who met on games online and now are together rl, two even got married and one is looking forward to there first baby girl :)

If you really have met people who did ALL of those horrible things, then I can't blame you for wanting to move to my town. It sounds like you must live in hell or atleast next door to it. In my town myself and my friends were probably to worst kids on the block and we mostly just made prank phone calls and harassed people over the internet. We never killed any small animals or raped anybody.

So yeah, sure, come move to my town. It sounds like you would be a LOT safer here. I would still lock your door though. Its just a privacy issue. You don't want anyone walking in on you while you are butt ass naked do you?

Then again you play Second Life... so maybe you do!

One thing, remember all those killers and serial rapists, usually apart from the media trying to say oh he played GTA or online chat programs, you never hear them say wow he played SL what a hive of scum and villainy :) what you do nearly every time hear them say is "oh he was always quiet" "I never would have suspected" "he or she helped me in with my shopping".

No, where in the world did you get that idea? I've played GTA and a lot of games much "worse" than that. I've also "played" Second Life.

But like I said before, Second Life doesn't create this kind of crazy. It is a breeding ground for this kind of crazy though.

Crazy people flock to Second Life because its an enviroment where there are no rules and they can carry out their weird sexual fantasies. Up until the invention of the internet these people had to sit in their basements and pleasure themselves while looking at hand drawn Sonic the Hedgehog fan art all alone. But now that we have the internet and these people can quietly seek out other people who have the same "interestes" as they do. After all those years alone in their basements if you add even ten people to their fetish and suddenly it seems mainstream to them.

Then along comes Second Life and these little fetish groups start to set up shop. You end up with entire continents dedicated to fetishes like furry, Gorean and much worse things.

Have you ever looked at the population in Second Life? The world is HUGE but most of it is a ghost town. You see just a few locations which have a HUGE number of people. Some of those locations are somewhat innocent such as the "Welcome area" where new players appear in the world but actually serves as the main chat area for the world. Beyond that however the rest of the population is condensed into sex clubs, porn shops or automated gambling simulators.

I'm not going to claim everyone who enters Second Life is a pervert or a psycho. But a hell of a lot of them are. And thats why Second Life players stalk each other in real life and abuse their dogs.

Easy enough, my older borther's friend had a wife, they played EQ1 back in the old days and my bro's friend challenged someone in a duel and they both wagered thier wives, my bro's friend ended up losing and had to break the news to his wife. She divorced him, and he ended up in jail because the guy who won came to claim his prize only to end up fighting in RL.

That... is a very good story. But I think the point was to come up with an example which would show that weirdos on the internet aren't the only ones who do this kind of stuff. Got a link to a news article anyway though?

Wait, there was a PICTURE of the woman in that article? I must have missed that. I need to go check this out.

EDIT: ARG, fatty! Yeah, I see what you mean. Actually, she looks a bit like this crazy chick who was the mom of this kid I knew a long time ago. It wouldn't suprise me at all if it was the same woman.

In a similar vein as my last story, heres another "internesting" experience someone had with Second Life which was posted in an article I found somewhere:

Walking around the welcome island trying to figure out how this world worked, I was approached by a woman who was so ludicrously peroxided and fake-breasted that she looked beautiful. In the universe of Second Life, she actually seemed normal. All the women here look like Pam Anderson, the men like Lorenzo Lamas. Turns out when you let people create fantasy versions of themselves, androgyny doesn’t sell.

As my new pneumatic friend gave me a tour of casinos and outdoor gardens, she made it clear that although she was happy to show me around, we wouldn’t have sex. These websites are getting more realistic by the day.

It wasn’t just that my character was too short for her (you have to buy extra height) or too unpenised (you have to buy genitals). It was that she had a Second Life boyfriend she really loved, and they were monogamous.

He was several countries away, but he was perfect, caring and deep, and their love was pure – totally emotional, unsullied by physicality. Though they would occasionally press buttons and watch their avatars pound away while they typed dirty things to each other and touched themselves. So, “pure” in the sense that really disgusting things are pure if no one sees you do them.

The only problem in this otherwise idyllic relationship was that she was happily married. Still, I thought, that wasn’t such a big deal. It was just a faceless, flirtatious, dorky friendship with someone she didn’t know. It might be creepy, but it clearly wasn’t adultery. If this is the cheating of the future, we can look forward to an incredibly unsexy batch of Richard Gere movies.

But then my new friend told me she’d fallen so hard for her Second Life boyfriend that she just had to meet him in person, though she was planning to bring her husband along. This is where I learned that, to my surprise, in my fantasy life I long to be Dr. Phil.

I warned her that her plan would endanger two relationships, and that she was better off enjoying a good thing while it lasted. I also thought it would be helpful if she sent me transcripts of these online chats she was having with her phony boyfriend. She refused, saying it would be a breach of trust. People draw a lot of weird lines in cyberspace.

well for one that must been a while back since casinos are now banned

nonetheless there are still many weird things that happen like that

personnaly i never understood the need to have a relationship in a virtual world, even less simulate a sexual experience. i dont see the point of watching 2 avatars have intimate moments and to ptop it off write dirty thing? mmm not really my genre. i rather have the real thing. and in my opinion if you dont get the real thing that means you either are an asshole, an idiot, or a b**** and then you do not deserve it.

dont hide behind your computer screen pretending to be someone you are not...

as everyone knows the first and most important rule of relationship success, "be yourself" by impersonating an avatar you already broke that rule

This is very true.

To blame Second Life for this event would be like blaming Video Games for Violence.

Only a small, small percentage of mentally unbalanced individuals would be affected.

One could easily have picked up a stalker thru a simple Yahoo Chatroom.

BTW, Sqall'zell,  I totally agree with you there.

I've been on SL since 2005 and have never endulged in "virtual romance".

It's not the same as the 'real' thing.

While I won't deny others the right to enjoy it, its not something I can get into.  I prefer ALL of my senses to be involved in a romance.

Besides, I have met 2 people so far from SL.  Both were guys I knew.  One just moved to the area.  Lets just say their avatars look & act better than they do in Real Life.

For the People who think that avatar looks/acts  like the person they're "In Love" with I have 2 words:  NOT LIKELY!!

She was wierd, anyone who wants to go into outer space is not playing with a full deck (Example: Richard Garriot). But did she abuse her dog while stalking someone? No. Takes a Second Life player to do something like that.

You mentioned that you know two guys from SL and both of them act much worse in real life than they do in the game? Well thats exactly the point! In SL everyone is perferct. The men all look like they could compete in the Mr.Universe contest. The women all make super models seem ugly by comparison. People all seem cool and smart, people fall in "love" therough the game and everyone thinks SL is just a way to chat with people. But the harsh reality is that most of these people are bat$#!% insane in the real world and will stalk you to the ends of the earth while abusing their pets.

But I guess those are the chances you take when you play a "game" where the entire economy revolves around selling people their own genitals.

that's a big claim! according to your claims it makes me wonder if Lenin or Stalin also played Second life

Asking for help on the internet is like asking a swarm of bees why they are stinging you!

What are you, kidding me? Commies wouldn't play this game. WAY too much capitalism in this game for them.

Now Hitler on the other hand... you never know.

Each man must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, which course is patriotic and which isn't. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide against your conviction is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may. ~Mark Twain

personnaly i never understood the need to have a relationship in a virtual world, even less simulate a sexual experience. i dont see the point of watching 2 avatars have intimate moments and to ptop it off write dirty thing? mmm not really my genre. i rather have the real thing. and in my opinion if you dont get the real thing that means you either are an asshole, an idiot, or a b**** and then you do not deserve it.

dont hide behind your computer screen pretending to be someone you are not...

as everyone knows the first and most important rule of relationship success, "be yourself" by impersonating an avatar you already broke that rule

Hehe, why not? I do, allthough I roleplay a fat disgusting pig you thank god you don't have anywhere near you, and if you had a daughter you could happily deny her to marry him allthough that would be kinda unneccessary cause he got the sex appeal of a road accident

(yep a necro allthough a worthy one to warn people about the sickos that play this so-called game)
