I can sum up my feelings on Warhammer - Age of Disappointment with a cockney voiced police officer motioning people away from a twitching corpse...

"Move 'long now laddies, der 'b nothin's ta see 'ere."

(though to be honest I really didn't expect this game would be for me... and I was underwhelmed even with that level of expectation.)

So what happened to RPGs?  With 'Warbummer' following in the footsteps of such classic disappointments as Age of Conan O'Brian & Pablum Rasa what is going on here?

To quell the fanbois (though they can't take any dissent from the god-worship of whichever game has yet to show up on their mother's credit card statement)

Yes, I have played both Realm factions.  Yes, I am trying most of the 'different' (and I use that word losely) character classes.  Yes, I have leveled past 10th.  Yes, I have both teamed and soloed... ad infinitum - ad nausium.

But what I have been playing is a clunky 1990's game, reminiscent of some outdated Diablo-Nintendo hybrid mutant PUG... thing.

What the hell happened to RPGs where the sandbox was deeper than what I brought in stuck on the bottom of my sandals?

Wow and to think you had the patience to put up with AOC for a long time but gave up on WAR after 2 days live.

If you know the enemy and you know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.

See, in your mind, using large, complex words makes you seem witty and deep.

/whisper

It doesn't.

As for everything you said, you can throw it out.  Never once did I see WAR touted as a sandbox game, or anything more than an MMOPVP game.  Yes, it's classified as an MMORPG, but almost every online game is nowadays (Runescape, really?).

Not sure where you got your info from, but it was wrong.

If you bought the game and knew nothing about it beforehand, that's your own damn fault.

If you played the beta and came to this conclusion... ok, you're entitled to your opinion.

Maybe you should try some constructive criticism however.  This just seems like useless banter.

hehe, Yes JBlah.  I was able to tolerate AoC for almost the entire month before I realized it simply was not going to be a good game.

However, Warbummer is Diablo.

If we were running over med-kits I would say it was closer to Doom or Castle Wolfenstein

I just don't understand why I am seeing games like Tablua Rasa (which would be fun on a PSP or something about at that level) or a game like AoC that simply missed... well missed whatever mark it was shooting for.  Warbummer could easily have been made in the last decade of the twentieth century.  I am almost certain I have this game somewhere on floppy disks for an Amiga

I have a computer that can is oozing videoRAM across the floor, down the stairs and out in to my koi pond... why must I be subjected to games that are clunky, linear, slotcar styles nintendo PUG multiperson shooter thingies

Is depth really something that is outdated?  Are complex characters really not a selling point for the nintendo kiddiots?

I didn't have high hopes that this game would hold my attention.  But sheesh.  This is really not the quality I would have expected or am I completely missing the concept and this clunky, 1990's style game was done this way on purpose to ... to what?  Make it like the pen and paper version?

You are completely missing the concept.  The game is centered around RvR which can involve hundreds of players at a time.  There really isn't much more to be said about it.

Whether or not I agree with you is inconsequential. What you wrote was very well articulated and written.

I applaud you.

Wait.. you already knew you weren't going to like this game. Why did you buy it?

The Game companies out there don't want to make a GAME Different.. cause different is a RISK.. they want to use a formula that makes $$$$$$$

when they see 5 MIllion + people on WOW.. they see a winning formula for the masses.. not the excentric aged veteran players like you that want a sandbox game.

I am almost thinking that people that want that should play Oblivion.. and stay away from MMOs.

Play Muds. Play MUCKS, play Telnet RPGs from the early 90s. What you are looking for is Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies pre NGE, Darkfall, Ryzom. You aren't looking for Asherons call, Everquest, WoW, or Warhammer.

You want the smaller less popular games for the 10% of the MMOers that want somethign different.. not that 90% that jjust want some mindless fun.

WAR is fun cause its simple, and fast.

Stick you 90s rpgs, or Table Top games like vampire, werewolf, Dungeon and Dragons 3.5 edition or less (4.0 D&D is WoW on paper) , Hell i can send you the Conan RPG (d20 and D6) or I can send you the Warhammer RPG game.. great deadly fun.

Ill tell you what happened WoW brought in way to many casual  carebears to the MMO genre, and they out number the old school MMO'er 5-1 so the companies are catering to the carebears and were getting all these weak MMO's. It is indeed very frusterating.

ManJunk said "You are completely missing the concept. The game is centered around RvR which can involve hundreds of players at a time. There really isn't much more to be said about it."

(I would quote it but somewhere in this forum there is an open code that is taking the right side of my text boxes in to the next dimension)

I think the RvR would be great!  And I will concede that for a game that will have many dozens (I will wait to see if they can actually pull off the 100's that they are hoping for) PvPing the stuffing out of each other will be difficult especially getting it to run smoothly on low end machines and toaster overs like what people are using to play wow and other junk.

I love the idea... but well, can't we have a little depth too?  I feel like Oliver holding up my empty video card asking "Please, Sir, can I have some more?"  My computer is going to mutany if I don't give it something to do while I am playing Warbummer.  I think my G9 mouse has enough computing power to run the depth of this game

How about...

The Spell System and Loot Items from Asheron's Call

The Teaming mechanics from City of Heroes

The Graphics from Age of Conan

The Crafting from Anarchy Online

And the RvR from Warhammer?

Perfect game?

WoW in a PvE aspect is actually deeper then WAR, PvP wise I really can't comment never seeing 21+ RvR. As to the interface and feel I agree with the OP it is clunky and just does not flow. Posting anything negative will bring the pack a rabid fanbois down, DAOC flowed 10 times better then this and the Battle grounds in DAOC were actually more engaging then this WoW clone scenarios they call RvR.

I'm not getting all of these negative threads. This game is perfect to me. I can't imagine what more they could have done. It's just FUN.

I'd have to agree with the OP.

I want more than mindless pvp, which means WAR is out. /sigh, yes I know it's not pvp it's RVR and beatin' the snot actually means something when it really doesn't cause all it is, is a BG with  different textures.

I don't really like pvp much, but I dislike it even more when it's pointless.

Nothing currently out has anything to offer anyone that wants any sort of depth, or for lack of a better term, character construction that makes me feel like I've actually accomplished something with my character. The few games out that did make me feel that way got castrated (NGE'd), or cancelled because EA doesn't like competition so they buy the developer, and kill off their projects.

You want an rpg that's a sandbox, that's not War, is that your real question? Maybe a single player game, where you can build farms and play with pokemons? No game in the 90's played liked this or looked like this, Perhaps the angle you approached this game was wrong, I didn't even pay attention to it until this weekend because of all the same disapointments you mentioned in this years other releases.

You probably just jumped in to fast and are on your last nerve from all the bad recent releases, kinda like jumping into one relationship after leaving another bad one, you're on the MMO-Rebound. Give it more time, believe me I've played some truly horrid online games this isn't one of them, patience. Understand the Waaagh, feel the Waaagh, be the Waaagh.
