Ugh, another let down.  Had high hopes since this is a game developed by Mythic, the same people who did DAoC, which was AWSOMENESS!!! Then I play this and, ugh, boooring.

Maybe my standards are set to high because I was able to play great sandbox MMO's. Dark Age, FFXI, SWG, yea, those really spoiled me. But now adays, these games are just lacking. IMHO, all they keep doing is dumbing down these games for the masses so 'Johnny 5th Grader' can play for his 10 minutes before he goes to bed at 8PM.

Well, lets just keep on lowering that bar!! Maybe one day this genre will just die. Seriously, if you have played other MMO's, then this one is nothing new. Same ol' same ol'... unless you're a total fanboi of this series it really isn't worth picking up.

I'm taking up single player games.

Yeah I played those too. Sure socializing in MMOs is damn near non existant til WAR, but that doesn't mean its a bad game. WoW changed the genre and us "older folk" are going to have to get with the times b/c thats what the average consumer these days wants. I still enjoy it a lot though. WoW was alright but it lacked the community and grouping that DAoC, FFXI and SWG spoiled us with.

DAOC was horribly broken at launch with hibernia having no drops, midguard being the only realm with stuns, and then they dropped trials of atlantis on us. SWG was good times, but really was buggy as all hell. FFXI had that 18 hour boss fight fiasco. None of those game were very good in terms of polish or stability. We loved them because of what we made out of them. Honestly, think back, if any of those games launched today everyone would go apes***. The problem isn't the games that are coming out. Most of them are better products. The way people act in game is what changed. It used to be that a server had its few annoying players and everyone ignored them. Now it seems the majority of players act like jackasses all the time. So we don't socialize in game as much as we did back then. Its hard to have fond memories of WoW when you see the same spam in trade chat about chuck norris or whatever everytime you log on. WAR so far has been alright. I rolled on a RP server hoping to have a better community which has worked out so far *knock on wood*

EDIT: Honestly, I never wanted better than UO. I just wanted more of the same. Anyway, tired as hell, off to bed.  =)

While I do agree with you , you have to stop and think about it: We have been playing mmos for a while now, when the genre was still NEW to us, it just "felt" more fun. It was a new experience, like your first time on a motorcycle, then after a while the motorcycle becomes second nature, and u lose the "rush" u felt the first time u did 155mph on the highway on one wheel.

Lately Ive been put off by all new mmos, I try em, but never really get into any of them nor have as much fun as I had with a great group of friends. I hope the genre survives the "bottomline", and by bottomline I mean companies rushing out half-ass products in an attempt to "woo" stockholders into thinking they are the next "Blizzard" or "SOE"

Where did the quality gaming go?

Yes, because people dislike a completely mediocre game, they must be on the payroll of some company. GG

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

I can't agree more man. Although I have nothing personal against any of the games I tried but didn't enjoy, AoC, WoW, TR, VG=SoH...I just never felt at home, nothing to bite into for the long haul.

I know, some will say, "Get with times..blah,blah, blah.." or  "Times change, you gotta go with the flow, and stop complaining"  lol

If a bunch of kids can start threads with "This game sux!!!"..I can certainly humbly express my opinion where I want.

Let the flames come, Hell's already rejected me.

SWG and FFX1 are two of the worst games ever made so if that is what you want I think the problem is you have bad taste in games, not that war stinks. Sorry to be the one that informs you of your bad taste in games.

But what is the major difference between those games with good communities, and the current games with bad communities? Community dependence. Back in those games, you needed other players for items, for groups, for leveling. Being a jackass wouldn't get you very far if you needed the people you were being a jackass to. But in this generation of MMO's, they are essentially single player games in an online world. You don't need anyone. So there is no repricussions for being a jackass.

See what I did there?

BTW, telling someone else they have bad taste is ridiculously stupid. Beyond stupid. I'm afraid to go down to that level of stupid for fear I won't be able to come out and will be forever in a comotosis state.

I don't buy the "It was new, so it was obviously more fun..." schtick.  I mean, no offense, but just because something is/was great fun, doesn't mean it was just because it was new.

I mean, you can take any other genre in the game industry find basic foundational similarities between the games according to their likeness.  I mean, Call of Duty, Doom, and Half Life all basically function the same way.  Mass Effect, The Witcher, KOTOR, Final Fantasy all basically follow the same RPG formula.  Super Mario, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank all involve the smae sort of things.

I realise that each of these games seperate themselves from the rest through some means, but they are categorically categorized for a reason: fundamentally, they are the same.

MMO's take this a step further, though.  The last four major MMO releases have not just been fundamentally the same - they have been almost complete carbon copies of one another, with different skins.  Not only that, but they also play exactly the same.

AoC

WoW (Not an originator, but it's the one all other MMO's are compared against, which does not include in the four major titles I mentioned earlier.)

WAR

LOTRO

Vanguard

Tabula Rasa (To be fair, this one is sort of different, but is plagued by a lot of other design problems that it shares in common with the rest of these games, and is still fundamentally the same.)

All of these games are exactly the same games.  When will people learn that different art and bigger worlds don't make a game... different?  They don't even go into the trouble of designing how you obtain levels, feats, skills... whatever!

The problem isn't the newness wore off... wll... not in the way you mean it.  The problem is we moved on, and are ready for the genre to evolve. It appears that developers/investors don't want to.

Eve probably would be your choice for a game thats still fresh and has never been dumbed down to a point where its no longer fun. Hell pvp has a meaning in it at least!

Ah the irony just drips from this.  the funniest thing about this release is the people who have no idea what they are saying and provably wrong thinking they are the smart ones.

Miagisan,

I have to agree with you..

This coming from the kid that willingly paid to play the beta also known as SWG:NGE for YEARS.

WAR is mediocre and more of the same.  But it is clear that people like you are ok with that.  Some of us just expect more.

I agree with the spoiled part .. i have not yet picked up a copy of War.....tbh im sick of the whole elf,orc thingy! Screw middle earth.D&D and whatever fantasy crap there is out there. talk about over done!!!

You see though the problem with SWG Pre-CU is that it was kinda a fluke i mean you could never plan anything like that to happen on purpose, you could help it happen by having an awesome crafting system, and Skill point system cause i do i agree with Koster's theory of combat levels deviding players, and by having a player driven economy... but the most ironic part of what would be needed is an overall lack of content such as SWG had. :) i mean who would have time to really get into crafting, exploring and grinding(wich is where i met 90% of my friends) when you have a 20 man raid to do every day for your uber loot or reward gear!!

TBH there will never be another SWG cause all the kiddies and most players of MMO's now days would never get it.... they would be like WTF?????? and  explode or starve to death cause there wouldnt be a dev  there to spoon feed the moron to uberness!
