Afternoon all;

After playing this game now for approx 30+ hours I wanted to give "my!" honest review of WAR. By far I have not experienced everything possible nor have I seen everything on the servers, I don’t claim to know anything but my own opinion. However after playing both open BETA and head start I have to say I don’t see anything STUPENDIOUS here. "NOTE I have played 5 healer classes from 9-17, and 4 other class to 10+, and 1 tank to 19"

I will start with a 5 score and give you my +/-

+1 launch/administration. (ALL in all this company has done stupendous in this department. Any small problems they have announced ASAP and any game breaking problems they have dealt with extremely fast. All programs of this size will have some bumps and bruises but all in all this experience has been an A+ is my grade

+2 FUN FACTOR. (I must say that this game is just plain fun. If you enjoy PVP fast paced, the ability to jump into this at level 1 or any time is extremely awesome. The PVP it’s self if scenario or open PVP is great. IT IS FUN FIRST!!! A++ is my grade

+1 NEW innovation. (I know you think the scenario isn’t new, but the way it works is very new. The ability to Q up for different PVP scenario and as a group is great. The PUBLIC quests are like a small raid starting every 5 minutes. This is by far one of the best new things in years. A+ is my grade

+0 Graphics. (Here this game hits it average point. Are the graphics of character bad or mobs bad NO not by any measure at all. However do any of the graphics have the WOW factor (not the game) at all. NO sorry. The graphics don’t make a game though. I understand to have 100 people in a zone running around at one time limits need to be set. ALL in all the look is average especially for the time C is my grade

-0 character selections/modification. (This I almost gave a negative to. After a second thought I decided to leave this at just neutral. WAR has 6 races and 10 classes (I think). Number of faces/eyes and beards I would have to guess here but maybe 10 faces, 10 eyes, 10 beards, 5 colors of jewelry and 10 hair, 10 color of hair. I am being 100% generous here I believe. Let’s look at some other games. EQ1-12 at introduction and 15 at introduction. Remembering that long ago is hard but id bet it had more options. EQ2- .... Camelot.... Starwars.... I don’t think I have to go on. ALL in all the characters look decent, but I can’t give it exceptional, and the number drops me to a C is my grade

-1 Variability or equipment / different looks (Like above this game is very limited not only on race but on the availability of optional looks. One huge issue for me is armor/weapon cross class/race. If a staff drops it is then subbed down to what race. Same with Light armor... This dramatically limits the numbers of looks you can select from. Yes they have the ability to dye armor/cloth but to be honest seeing 20 people in a zone you can tell what level someone is by look in 2 seconds from level 1-20. I’m sorry but with character selections added I have to give this option a failing grade. D is my grade

-1 number of classes (Again like above I have to expand on this. 11 or so classes are the total amount. The number of skills and how they have duplicated them almost exactly frustrates me. Example- If you play a Archmage or Goblin Shaman and the skills are 100% alike. The numbers of spells/abilities are very limited. So far in the first 16 levels as a healer I have seen not one impressive spell animation. NOW bright wizard has some neat stuff. .. NOT bad... But all in all the number of classes reminds me of a KOREAM MMO in limitations. D is my grade

-1 crafting (Here im not going to go into detail. However after working on this like mad, I have to say I AM NOT IMPRESSED. I was tempted to give this an F. However what is their, is decent and again from the beginning the DEV's said this game wasn’t going to be big on crafting. So this in mind.... D is grade

At 6/10 this game is on the cusp of failure.  All in all this is a fun game that is ground breaking in a couple areas, and average in many others. Will and have I purchased this game, YES... Will I play it for along time, Doubt it.
If you are looking for PVP fun this is it. HOPE this helps someone.

Yes, I stopped reading there too. If you're going to make up shit, atleast get your facts straight. The servers haven't even been up for 30 hours.

My assumption is that he's, you know, including time in beta. Given that he *said* he was including time spent in open beta, this would seem like  good bet! Of course, since you both 'stopped reading' after he said he'd been playing thirty hours (which is not impossible in the first place), I would guess you missed that part. :)

 wow, lamest review ever.

dude gives a -1 for a D and only a +1 for an A+, simply an amazing display of idiocy there. THEN, he calls a D a failing grade. Last I check, D wasn't a failing grade and I was still given credit for having taken the class :P

mmcrimson is now fired from having any more ideas.

Technically if you started out at 10/10, based on the additions and subtractions of scores you would end with an 11/10 as well.

I would also like to ask about your weighted score system.  How does something that gets an A++ get 2 points, and A+ gets 1 point, then a D rating gets a -1?  I'm not understanding your weighted system at all.  I would conclude if an A+ gets a 1, an F- would get a -1.

Edit:

I would also add that an Archmage and Shaman while similar, do not play exactly the same.  Though honestly are 11 classes not enough?  I mean you don't even have to play one type of healer, which caters to a wide variety of players that don't like to be locked into the typical "Healer" role.  Frankly I don't think I've seen a game where half of your team could consist of healers because of the choices of playstyles afforded to them.

A OP with 10 total posts on MMORPG.COM, thank you for your informative yet useless post. How many 'reviews' do we need?

btw, I give his 'review' a  1.5/10 on the scale of useful information. Don't quit your day job.

TO all the PWND people... Read before you open your mouth.

30 hours , 3 days in both open beta's and 24 hours starting with CE head start i very possible.  I played 3-5 hours a day.  If I was a pimple faced kid like most of the reply's I could of played 30 of the last 36 hours easily..

his rating system is flawed.

A+=3
A=2
B=1
C=0
D=-1
F=-2
F-=-3

so his final score should be 8/10.

officialy the game did not start till CE head start in which they turned off the debugger, also you need to learn about statistics. (thats how you make a rating)

Why not wait a few days for the actual release?  Then you don't have to speculate about things like graphics.

Its only 3-4 days.

Either way you're entitled to your opinion, people who judge MMOs based on a point scale have limited judgement anyway.

First your point scale is flawed which was pointed out earlier but also you didn't include any other games to compare Warhammer to. That alone eliminates any useful information other than just your dialogue.

There are over 500,000 people that signed up for Closed Beta on Warhammer. We don't need 500,000 reviews, Open Beta has come and gone and people's chance to try out the game for free is also gone. If people want to give the game a shot the nearest Best Buy/Target whatever is right down the road.

WoW is revered by many and also hated by many.

EQ2 some people love others say it's seriously lacking.

Vanguard everyone knew was a pile of crap at launch, however since then it's a playable solid game but still people won't give it a shot based on reviews.

<Insert other MMO opinion here>

The point being, half-assed 'reviews' are pointless. You either jump in and try it out for yourself or you don't, no one can truly RATE a game since everyone is different.

I would agree in general with some of your assessments of WAR's strengths and weaknesses.  But taken as a whole I think the game will be more successful than your score would suggest.

If they launch and they are stable and performance is good, then that would be a strong positive in light of recent releases.  Add in the ability to just jump in and play and several ways to level, also strong positives.  Then there is the competitive aspect that other mmo's also have but that I think WAR will continue to cultivate and hone, and you have another strong element.  There is certainly room for growth, and how often they can update and also release expansions will also play into their success or failure.

As you stated, the graphics are not bleeding edge, but they are where they need to be to keep the game playable for RVR.   Theyfore, they exercise restraint as a matter of practicality.  That's a positive.

Animations are a bit meh.  But they can be improved if they want to make things nicer.  Music is very boring.  It's so boring that I can not recall the music right now as I think about it.  That is something I think they could improve without impacting performance.

I think this game will have a successful and popular launch and hold on to a good percentage of subs.  And a year from now, I see this game with an expansion on the way and a significant increase in subs over launch, which several games recently do not appear to be able to achieve.  That is my prediction.  We'll see.

Not sure what you expected, this forum is flooded with fanbois that will rip your face off if you mention anything negative about their precious little game.

But, I'm not going to rip apart the point system that you made to give your review, because YOU MADE the system, and you can weight it however you want, something the geniuses in the thread don't quite grasp.

I do agree with you however on your points and your rating.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

as this is a good example of what you can expect from a hater, in other words. anti-fanboy who flames fanboys - yes, anti-fanboys are just as bad, perhaps worse since they invoke the arguement :P

I would think fun factor would count about 10 times more than a lot of the other things you suggested. Seemed like an odd way of rating the game.

If i have fun playing a game, then i  play it. if i dont enjoy, then i dont play it. i am sure that applies to gamers the world over.  seeing as how you said you had fun playing the game, at least the pvp, that would lead me to believe that you would play the game, and maybe rate it a bit higher.

on another note, i think the fact that they have sold 1.5 million copies of the game (to retailers) is a good indicator of the game's success.

 i agree with the OP and i will list my own opinion of the game. games i have played

ryl

shadowbane ( best pvp ever)

lineage2 ( no comment)

wow ( was fun for a while but raiding felt like a second job)

ffxi ( the game that you can always go back to when your ored for a little bit of fun)

eq2

aoc ( 1-20 awesome! afterwards it goes downhill)

various other games.

every person is entitled to thier own opinion about anything. after playing war i can say that i am unimpressed. i can give many reasons but i will give the one that true gamers know about. WAR DIDNT FEEL GOOD! i mean the graphics are ok, the pvp is ok, the combat felt a little akward to me after playing wow, but its manageable after trying it out. i know your suppose to try a game for so many hours for a good impression on it, but thats not always true. at the start of ffxi,wow,aoc and shadowbane i enjoyed it from the moment i entered, and the enjoyment didnt go away for a while (at least 2 months)! upon entering war i was excited for a whole hour! after doing the pvp battle ground that was part of the story quest and a few quest, i wasnt feeling it to much( the quest were pretty interesting though). i just didnt feel the magic like other games had. so IMO WAR IS AVERAGE! i dont think its better than wow. wow has nuthing to worry about at all. i am not a fanboi for wow in the least, it just seems that wow and war are similar and therefor making wow a good comparison. i think war is like most mmo's, good for some people, not so good for others. so stop bashing people who bash a game that they dont find enjoyable. thier only stating why they didnt find it enjoyable.

I think its a good review, I agree to it. Only GOA in Europe has so far not performed well and the translation is unfinished in several big parts.

I also want to add that it is beyond my understand why a PVP centered game has NO ingame voice chat?

So your complaints are:

- Variety in equipment (even though there are 23 sets for every class)

- Number of classes (which there are 20 of)

- Crafting (which is easy and moderately useful, and also just as good as WoW's were on release)

I have a hard time taking you seriously.
