Enough with the blaming WoW for the downfall of todays mmorpgs.

Wow is a good game its the idiot devs that try to copy wow that are ruining everything.

We only need one WoW, make a different game and maybe this genre wouldnt be as sad as it is currently.

Makes me sick every time i see some noob blaming wow for the current state of mmos.

Be pissed of at the other devs not blizzard. blizzard made a good game and has brought so many more players to the genre.

./rant off

Any new or returning player to WOW, send me a PM for some help getting started.

I agree, Blizzard didn't even do anything great with WOW.   They simply took everything before them and made it better and more polished.  Like Bioware... the question they kept asking is " Is this going to be fun".

The problem with new games that try and compete directly with WOW is that they are competing with a mature, well polished game.  If a company today had to release against WOW 4 years ago, they could compete.  But WOW is better today then it was then.

The irony in all this is that games like AOC and Warhammer are trying to be a lot like WOW... while the new game that Blizzard is making ( Starcraft universe) will be the first MMORPG that will be drastically different then WOW.  Bioware is also making a space MMORPG (based on Kotor) and may end up being more like "Wow in space" then the actual Blizzard space game is.

Blizzard WOW
Bioware = WOW in space
Blizzard = completely new space MMORPG.

Those will be the 3 games with over a million subscribers in 2010

“The corollary to that is if you’ve seen a game consolidate servers, you know it’s in deep, deep trouble — that’s not a healthy sign for an MMO,”
"Look at us six weeks out. If we’re not adding servers, we’re not doing well.” - MJ from Warhammer in July Interview

What downfall? MMORPG's have more subscribers today than anytime in history. How is that a "downfall"?

I don't see them as "ruined" either. Perhaps you could define exactly what you mean by that.

I think the second paid subscription based game on Xfre is ... EVE. (players playing).

EVE has about 250K subs...

These numbers are the same as EQ had almost 8 years ago.The others are way behind (LOTRO and AoC just fallen behind).

So having 250K subs is a HUGE success these days, like .... 8 years ago.

The pie is divided into extreme little portions.

Yeaaaahhhhh im gonna have to disagree with you. WOW is a 4 year old "has been game". No one is cloning WOW, in fact it is WOW cloning other games *cough cough Warhammer*

Seriously though WOW itself is not totally to blame for other mmorpg downfalls. I would put more of the blame on the players themselves for paying every month to play a game with low standards and is out of date mmo like WOW. Yeah I blame the players because they are lazy and cheap and don't want to ever have to upgrade their Commodore 64s to play games that require a good CPU, more Memory and a better graphics card and they are content with WOW because they can run it on a Celeron or Duron processor with 64 MB of Ram and a voodoo 3dfx video card.

Players are the downfall for most mmo's because the devs put to much time into making games with stunning graphics and better combat systems in hopes of getting people that want something better and new. In most cases other mmo's have been better than WOW, but its aways been the same whining and crying about having to upgrade a computer.

Ive played Wrath of the Lion King beta and lots of people that have as well can tell you the same thing don't expect anything new and exciting, what is claimed to be new content is actually another Blizzard recycling job, just like The Boring Crusade was.

The same graphics, same battlegrounds, same end game result..Get to level 80 in a day or 2 and it is back to Warsong gulch for another 3+ years. Reminds me alot of Everquest.

It's hard to actually zero in on your point, but you obviously think that good graphics and high hardware requirements equal good gameplay, you sir are very far from the whole point of MMOs, not because you think it to be true, but you think it has anything to do with reality.

I think you are right in some cases, but also wrong in others.

First of all, EverQuest has had graphics engine upgrades that have significantly upped its system requirements. I used to play EQ on a Voodoo3 16MB Graphics card prior to PoP, and after PoP it was just not feasable. By the time time it got to Omens of War, my Radeon 9200SE was also not feasable to play it. I just wanted to throw that out, because it's not true. EQ was upgraded all the way up from DX7 to DX9 in the graphics engine, which is fairly impressive IMO considering how old the game is...

Secondly, players don't complain because they have to upgrade their computers. They complain because of the level at which they need to upgrade their computers. The most common comeback from these players is: "Why should I spend xxx dollars to upgrade my computer to play this game? Everything else runs acceptably!" And developers just aren't taking that message to heart. You cannot try to revolutionize this industry by creating games with unreasonable system requirements and expect to get and maintain a high subscription base.

You cannot expect a user who is running everything from WoW, to EQ, to L2, to WAR on a ATI Radeon 9550 with 2GB of system RAM in a Single Core/HT P4 system with DDR RAM to go out and buy a completely new system for a game like Age of Conan, upgrade the PSU, upgrade the Graphics card to something almost on par with a high 8xx0 GeFore card, and upgrade their OS to Vista 64-bit (cause most systems come with 32-bit) just to play you game. That is unreasonable, and very expensive, especially when said players can play almost every other game out there with more than acceptable performance and framerates on "Balanced Settings".

Graphics is a huge overstatement/FAD in the MMO industry and is driven primarily by FPS players who have migrated to the MMO genre in search of good PvP games due to them growing bored of their FPS games. That does not work in the MMO genre, especially when you are expecting game worlds to house up to hundreds of players in the same area at the same time. People will not be content with single-digit FPS numbers in either a PvE raiding or mass PvP/RvR game.

That is the reason why recentn releases like WAR are very light on system requirements. That is the reason why WoW's system requirements are almost on par with EQ1. That is the reason why so many people are not subscribing to the WoW clones and sticking to WoW. WoW runs, and the WoW clones are too expensive IRT long-term investment in playing.

EQ2, VG, AoC - all post-WoW games that take many elements from WoW (either at release or somewhat patched in) with somewhat high system requirements that people just aren't really going to in droves (or leaving in droves). Yes, they will always maintain their hardcore fanbase, but they will never grow to be as successful as WoW because their potential subscription based is smaller due to their system requirements among other things.

Stop complaining about people complaining about system requirements. Games should not be an investment, but fun. It is unreasonable to expect the average MMO players to go out and buy a new computer or spend hundreds of dollars to upgrade their current rig to play an MMO. It is also unreasonable to develop MMOs with revolutionary graphics, but have it to where people need to turn off half of the graphics options to get acceptable FPS ratings in Raiding/Seiging/RvR situations... That is a gimmick, IMO... If you want great graphics, there are many Single Player RPGs or FPS games on the market. Feel free to pick one!
