Well, I could go through and respond to each and every one of your points, but that would take forever and I'm lazy, lol. So I'm gonna point out a couple things you seem to be upset about. First of all, you say that in DAOC you can capture your enemy's capitol or whatever, and grab their relic and then display it, which you wish you could do in WAR. Funnily enough, you CAN actually do this. You see, there are these things WAR has called Trophies. Now I haven't really looked into them much, and I'm sure you haven't looked into them at all, but you should. For example, and Paul Barnett has said this in recent interviews, lets say you capture the enemy capital. You sack it, burn it to the ground, destroy the two unique strong points within the city, unlock the king, fight him (which is an incredible feat itself) and win. What do you get for this? Woop-de-do and wait for the city to reset? Hell no. How about you cut the king's head off and keep it? How about you can then take the head and show it off to the enemy players so you can say "Ha ha, I killed your king, I'm better than you, and I can prove it" (to quote Paul). Maybe for killing 500 High Elves in PvP you get an elf skull, and what do you do with it? You can put it on your belt. Maybe you get a Dwarf beard (read the lore) to tie to your sword to let every dwarf know you're a badass dwarf killer. Maybe you get a symbol of the Emperor to emblazen on your shoulder. There's something like 13 different spots for these trophies on each character to be filled up with various things that not only differentiate you from the next player, but also show how cool you are. There's definately lots of meat there to be looked in to. Also you seem to say that removing the grind is a bad thing. Honestly I think it's a good thing. If you like grind, perhaps you might try an asian game. They all love grind very much. One of the reasons I think WoW did so well is because it is easier to advance. People don't want to sit down after a long day at work and have to spend 6 hours grinding only to get half a bar towards the next level which won't actually give you anything new. That's no fun, that's a job. People want to sit down and play for a short amount of time, and feel like they've accomplished something. Or atleast made some headway. I feel like all of your points are either ones you haven't looked into very much, or are quite subjective. In this case, there's really nothing anyone can do if you're dead set to hate the game. Bring it on down now. |

Anyways, I'll have to agree with you OP. I really wanted to love WAR since I loved DAoC so much, but everything you pointed out is there. Good balanced review and opinion of the game.

No, you don't understand. I really want someone to explain to me what makes this a good game. I don't see it, but there are so many people who like it, there must be a reason, right? Maybe I give people too much credit.
I really do think that you should make four groups: people that played other non RVR MMORGS, people that played early DAOC (up to/including SI), people that played or play DAOC till this day, people that are a total fanbois of another MMORPG and dont want to see their friends/guilds leave. Group 1 will loooooooove it, simply because of the RvR factor. It's a different experience to what they experienced before. Group 2 will loooooooove it, simply because it takes them back to the simle days of DAOC emain RvR but in an improved concept. Group 3 will be critical, where's the depth, where are the long term objectives (personally I can't believe they failed to include relics a o so critical part of RvR), this feels much simpler then current day DAOC, etc. Group 4 will do anything to bash the game just in order to convince their friends/guildmates to stay (this behaviour occurred a lot during WoW open beta as well then versus WoW). Long term wise WAR could mean a big influx of players towards DAOC who want the sandbox and extreme depth combined with RvR as it is hwo Mythic always planned this (DAOC hardcore sandbox RvR game, WAR easier accessible well balanced RVR game). /end input |

Well ill attempt to answer the question of "what is the appeal". 1) Familiar to WoW and DoAC players, meaning you dont need to learn something completely different. 2) Graphics that are attractive and yet simple enough to run well on most peoples computers without melting video cards. 3) 30+ zones of PvE content, giving PvE fans tons of quests and zones to explore. 4) 30+ zones of PvP content, giving PvP fans tons of areas, objectives and castles to fight over and conquer, all without having to travel to specific lands (like you had to do in DAoC). 5) Public Quests, some 300 of them throughout the world, giving you lots of cool events that can be done solo or with groups for unique fun, all the while raising your influence level, 6) An Influence system that takes what WoW did and goes beyond that, clearly showing you what the potential rewards are and makes them easy to get. 7) Separate PvE and PvP leveling systems. Staggered PvP gear that is easy to attain without requiring tons of Honor grinding like in WoW. 8) Guild leveling system and rewards along with excellent guild tools. 9) Gear you can Dye to further differentiate how your character looks from the masses. 10) 3 very different war fronts, allowing you to play the game from 3 very different perspectives, which also affords a lot more replayability than competiting products like AoC. 11) You can PvP from level 1 and immediately have fun without being forced to grind to become useful.

Kinda glad I wasn't in the old school DAOC or OU crowd. Seems like they need a game to be great on every scale in open beta for it to be a successful/enjoyable game. The game is fun for me. It will grow over time, and become a better game.
Groovy. |

You forgot to add the part about where everyone makes their judgements and assumptions based of of 1/4 of the game. "Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover" Daoc has been out for 1987250928 years, warhammer is in beta. You haven't even seen the endgame, and your talking about it being unbalanced. One of the biggest issues Daoc had for a very long time was balance issues. If I went onto the wow forums and said "Guys i bought this game 3 weeks ago, and got my character to level 37, this sucks! there is no balance, and everyone beats me in duels, this is such a shitty game" People would tell me to go fuck myself and get lost noob. Yet hundreds of "READ MY ARTICLE ON WHY WARHAMMER SUCKS" threads are popping up on peoples 3 days of experience during a beta session. OP = Fail.

To the OP, I think your title says it all. You are the one failing to understand why other people will enjoy WAR. You find there are too many minor details which prevent you from enjoying the game. That is fine, you are entitled to your opinion of what you enjoy or don't enjoy. However, some of your responses here are implying that you are brilliant and since you don't enjoy it, everyone who does enjoy playing WAR must be part of the idiot legions. I have to tell you I'm not brilliant, but I am not an idiot legion either. The reason I will play WAR is that I am enjoying the game. It's fine if you don't enjoy it, just don't play it then. No harm, no foul. If I stop enjoying playing WAR I will certainly move on to play another game. What I will not do is waste my time in a forum for the fans of the product and complain about why no one should like the game. For example, I stopped having fun playing WoW after the first 7 months years ago and moved on to other games. However, I have never posted a negative statement about my WoW experience in a forum dedicated to WoW fanboys. It's a waste of time because either they already understand my reasons for quitting WoW because they have quit the game for similar reasons too, or else they are enjoying the game and any negative thing I have to say about it would not resonate with them. I understand you don't like the product, and you are entitled to express your opinion. Consider that job done. It is now time to go in search of a product you will enjoy, and leave the rest of us who will enjoy playing WAR to our own devices. There is no need to denigrate yourself by trading insults or namecalling with the fanboys here. You'll only prove your opinion less worthwhile the more you lower yourself. I hope this helps. |

As a long time tester, I wish I could really comment on how I feel. Needless to say, this is one less subscriber WAR has.... It's a simple world for complicated people! Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. |

Errr I'm not talking about the WAR endgame being unbalanced, I actually said the exact opposite. Edit: and as to the part of leaving out peoples assumptions based on 1 hours worth of play, no I didnot leave them out. Group 4. People that are bashing like that have a motive, the motive is to be able to point to their friends and say see the game sucks because that guy agrees with me now stay with me and lets go do another mission. |

A details signifcance is only relevent to the person in which it's effecting, so to him, yes they are minor, to you they feel like a big deal. Get an education.

I never got why anyone liked WoW, but I don't demand WoW players give me an explanation. Because whatever they say, I still don't like it. The only solution here is for me to just let them play WoW and find games I like to play. And I have found many. |

Memoir, from the very first post I saw you talking nonsense, I figured after a while you'd either die or eventually give up after realizing you make absolutely no sense to anyone. It has become clear now that is not going to happen. I believe the proper solution will be to imagine all of your posts with cute little balloons and pretty butterflies floating all around them.

To Jerriescids: your point is taken, to you these details are major fun breakers and thus the game is not what you want to play. However, to me, they are minor details because I don't find them interfering with my fun when playing the game. It really is a matter of perspective, and while I understand the difference in perspective between the two polls of opinions about the game, the perspective I am addressing at that point in my comments is my own perspective. I hope this helps. |

I appreciate the well thought out response, in the past I have found people to be a little less... thoughtful in their responses.. Honestly I'm glad to hear some people are enjoying this game.. why would I want people to suffer.. Its just sad that my idea of what an mmorpg should be has really for the most part been dead for the last 5+ years, and I have failed to admit that it is gone... and unlikely to return.. Its kind of like getting a nice steak at a restaurant every night for years-- then settling for process spam for the next 5+ years.. I can either eat whats on my plate or starve.. and I literally do not know what option is better. (that analogy is MY OPINION/VIEW of games) |

Hyping is over . That period is past.
What I say and what you say is even irrelevant and certainly not interesting. The only interesting part is that WAR is published now and the boys and girls who got an excellent smoke curtain of huge expectations will have to share their opinions with those that actually start playing in the game and see for themselves what the hype was all about. And what's being realised and what's left over. I made a few points. I wouldn't even dream of putting it into discussion. The only thing is: WAR is published now. Done with the awesome led Zeppelin talking, now its walking time. :) And it makes me smile :)

Very bleak outlook my friend. Very bleak indeed. Curious though, what games again was it that were so unbelievable that it made you compare steak to uh...lol "spam." Come on, the game is great, it delivers on many levels. Just becuase you haven't given it the time of day and you insist upon looking down your nose at it doesn't make it a bad game or "spam." oh, and LOL

It's an issue of core gameplay: DAoC had relics on day 1. Relics are the point in DAoC: take it, defend it, hold it for as long as you can. The longer you hold it, the more difficult it becomes. In DAoC, holding keeps in your own territory made your relic guards stronger, while capturing keeps in enemy territory made their relic guards weaker. Day 1. Warhammer will have capital cities on day 1. Capital city sieges are the point in WAR: take it. You can't hold it for any definite period of time--you can only take it. Holding your own keeps in Warhammer doesn't really do a whole lot; capturing enemy keeps awards victory points, renown, and experience. Day 1. Explain to me why the latter system is better. Please. |
