I doubt something will come out soon since ppl bashed AOC hard so now rest of the industry is happy to continue making graphicaly outdated games. Looking at hype around Aion i see the dark age of MMOs are upon us - it's easier to make many cheap MMOs than invest into 1 big and serious one. I respect Funcom for trying to make at last something that looks as good as offline game. And i hate every ***** that has nothing better to do than to run all over the forums telling ppl how bad AOC is. And for some reason they usualy do not even talk about game, just "bugs of the beta" and stuff. |

I'm sorry, but if you're complaining about "slow combat" in the MMORPG genre, you should quit while you still can. Also, Guild Wars was never really marketed a MMORPG; therefore you can go by the reasoning that you in fact are not MMORPG genre compatible. Thank god WAR is going back to the roots of the industry. |

If some feel they need to be playing the "next generation" game with all the flashy graphics, pixel-shaded everything and bleeding-edge tech, to enjoy themselves, then more power to them. In my experience, every MMO that's tried to go "next-gen" has fallen short... too much focus on tech, and being "cutting edge"; too little focus on performance and playability. AoC's just another in a line of games whose developers' reach exceeded their grasp. Graphics will grab you, gameplay will keep you. And, personally, if a game is stable, playable and fun... that's all that matters. Why are people still playing EQ1, Doom, Diablo, and myriad other years-old games with long outdated tech? Because their entertainment value has far outlasted the "ooh and ahh" novelty of their graphics.

Funcom new Conan blew hard and just wanted to make a quick buck The difference is that Guild Wars actually has legitimate reasons for all the instancing. |

Back to the roots? You mean like Tabula Rasa (guns, but with a myriad of kill 10x quests), Vanguard (wishes it was EQ1) or LOTRO (pretty landscapes, bad UI, copycat playstyles) Stand and watch combat is getting stale. I would rather play a turn based RPG than pay another 15 bucks a month for the same thing as WoW! Sorry. I think you are right. I will go play some more FPS's and action games to find out. |

Ya well this is why imho it was bad that EQ1 was the first MMO many people played. Such as my GF never saw UO in a store... she happened to see EQ1.. bought it and was one of the first 50's on the server she played on... I didn't meet her until later. Anyway the reason I say this.. is much of the gameplay of EQ1 is what people see as "core" or "roots" and its what *I* see as why the industry is failing. I think UO should have been the roots.. Obviously not a perfect game but that's not the point. The point should have been player freedom in character design and advancement... newer games should have been more... more choice.. more freedom.. more everything. Learm from mistakes made and improve... what I see in the market now is to remove as much as possible.. limit everything you can... Its what I call... "easy mode game design". I would have liked to seen player economy like UO had.. or even SWG.. a place where crafters were needed and could consistently selll their items.. etc.. I never knew what slow combat was until I played EQ1.. it was in fact why I played UO so long. Hell even in SWG combat was fast before the crapstacular changes. Anyway this pretty much is why I see the industry collapsing... this ramble is beyond "to long" already.. and I could triple the size going through why the Level, class, uber loot design is killing the industry... but nobody really wants to read it. I think the one thing most all of us.. maybe even ALL of us can agree on... is we would love to see one really awesome game come out.. that just makes you want to play until you fall asleep at the keyboard.. and is.. fun.. fun.. fun.. something you spend years in... enjoying it.

Well I've been trying out warhammer and playing AoC too. I have a lvl 13 White Lion in WAR beta. I tried a few other classes to, too level 7. I picked a full server for both sides too. In RvR scenario every single time played there was no more than 20 ppl per side (these was all times of day too) the Destruction side had always more people. Always. Objectives were just like Capture the Flag, just like AoC minigames, just like Guild Wars Factions mini games. I didn't like the wait time for them though, sometimes 30 mins. It was fun, but a "bit of a bastard" to grind for renown points. I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong but became tiresome after a while. The PvE was just standard, run around kill 6 of this, 12 of that etc etc Public quests were a nice addition though, although for some, I found a lack of people in Beta to fully get the job done right, but it was fun too even though some of the things we had to do in them were bugged. like large postioned x-bows not firing, NPC walking invisbly through walls. RvR outside of the scenarios was neat, it was fun to flag yourself too. (although little people I saw) The combat felt old, im sorry but 2 second swings we saw in videos a year ago are still there, really made me appreciate the real time striking combat in Age of Conan. I have an awesome rig and the graphics set to max were very weaksauce, bland, lots of grey and brown, vast patches with no vegetation. The tree renders were just plain nasty. If you notice when you run or on a mount on terrain it makes the same noise, if you play AoC and you run over different terrain you here the correct effect for that, when on ice it crunches, when comes out of water you splash a bit, when in sand it makes that noise correctly adding more atmosphere in AoC for me in this particular area. I hated with warhammer the freaking Auto Attack. I am sorry I know its beta but come on - Line of Sight does jack shit. My RvR Scenario in my starting area had some tunnels you can run thru, I had spells being shot at me that went right thru 50ft of wall, I had spells hit me thru boulders big enough to hide me. I also found alarming the lack of collision detection, there was such a small amount there, several times I ran thru NPC's, players on my side - this is something that definately needs to be fixed. What a difference from AoC when line of sight really does matter, and body blocking works as a good tactic. Stability wise I had some issues with crash to desktop, I had no issues in downloading and installing the game though. Textures in game were pretty basic, disappointing. The view distance in warhammer is no where near the length you can see in AoC. I found the crafting to be pretty insignificant in comparing too. At least in Conan I can build a city and have that sense of accomplishment. I can see warhammer appealing lots in short term play but it feels limited so far (in limited gameplay) to longevity. I think warhammer does have a few strengths over AoC in some area's but not all. They are pretty different games on the whole. If Mythic can address the issues that are blantant then it should have a good future. Now GOA just needs to quit the business.. New Tarantia Commons DX10 - DX 10 Goodness - |

There is little to no accountability for behavior in RvR; punks, gankers, and smack talkers can fade into the anominity and safety of their faction. Not to mention leechers and people there for the ride doing nothing to help in a battle… Often such behavior is encouraged in RvR because the enemy is faceless and the consequences are few. No to RvR for me. I want to choose who my enemies are and not have the game choose them for me.
So I made that post such a long time ago and I stick stick to it today, after playing warhammer beta for a good amount of time, in fact im logged in right now. Breaking the post down:

I really agree with this, as I just did not feel it in WAR. I love AoC and the feel of the setting. But after coming back to AoC, the empty servers are disheartening and the continued delay of the big PvP patch just means WAR will walk away with the scrips. I will not play WAR, but I doubt AoC will be good for anything more than a 1 month play schedule either. Funcom really has made a mess of things. Too bad, as AoC as a game rocks. |

Just because you like AoC, dosen't mean you have to diss WAR because it may be the thing to replace it...hell PacMan's more fun....
Hell, if you like AoC then fine. But if you like those kind of games WAr's not for you...at all. WAR = Content, AoC = Shiny Shiny Pretty Pretty, that's it. But we've all heard the same thing before, you're just a higher rank then most people. So you're an older flamer.....eh |

WAR = Content ...seriously dude! --------------------------------------- |

Let see...700,000+ subs down to an estimated 50k (playing) in less than 5 months. Stock at an all time high 5 months ago $55.50 down to less than $10.00 today. The AoC fanboi base really cant say anything about how bad warhammer is. And to AA...to think I used to defend your posts about how great AoC was and how good it was gonna be from the others who said it was garbage. Man was I wrong. Anyone who says AoC is gonna be around in a year from now is nuts. |
|

Puts up hand - yes, I'm sure it will be around in a year. OMG I'm Nuts? LOL okay. But you know what? I'm a fickle gamer! - I often decide to play a game and stick with it, and then dont (because something else lures me away). so who's to say whether I'll still be playing in a years time? But that's the plan :) at the moment! |

I'm not sure how anyone finds AoC fun. I pretty much blitzed my way to 80, did a few dungeons etc. PvP was interesting, but the lag spikes just ruined it. My last few days of playing (couple of months ago now) I could barely hit anyone that ran circles around me, due to the los + latency and lag. After a while its just plain frustrating. I got a brand new high end PC for AoC and am now using it for everything but. Atm i'm playing the Warhammer OB and initially i was gobsmacked at the graphics. Incredibly dissapointing, tried to look past it {being on low afterall}. But after an hr it didnt bother me. PvE is fairly dull, but the public quests are quite good. I just finished a Chaos chp9 PQ. Was absolutely brutal! What makes it more interesting is everyone is competing to do the most dmg/contribute the most to get a high roll on the loot. Then theres the RvR. Certainly a good break from boring pve. Scenarios are far more rewarding but sometimes the queue's are pretty long. Other times you can get straight back into one after a minute. All depends on the population in the zone. I am dissapointed by the reseting of the rvr keeps etc. At first it was intriguing watching each zone control every now and then. But as time went by it just kept flipping back and forth so often I lost interest. I think if there was more reward for zone RvR {comparable to scenarios} then it would be worthwhile. Atm it just seems like pointless pvp, when you could spend time lvling etc. Guess its the main thing to do once you hit the lvl cap. I'd like for AoC to get its act together and fix all of its bugs. But even if it did, I dont think anyone would go back to it. Funcom burned sooo many players its not funny. Majority of ppl i know from my server wouldnt go back out of principle alone. All in all, whilst WAR's gfx, combat and animation are uncomparable to AoC, I still find it far more fun. Perhaps simply because its new, I dunno. At the very least it has potential, far more than AoC at this point as they've practically thrown it all away. I'm still hanging out for SGW beta though :p

AoC set up a new requirements for me, for what to look in upcomming MMO's, and unfortinalty WAR, AION, SGW - do not meet thouse requirements anymore. Once you been on the top, going back down seems like a waiste of my time. AoC is my cow, and i'll be milking it untill the end. |

So....how are those nice purdy graphics and animations working out for you in those massive (/snicker) city sieges? Sure, if you like playing with yourself (/snicker), then I'm sure AoC will be great for you. Try having a nice big battle and see how well those graphics, animations, and twitchy combat system does. Can you say...slideshow. Did the thought cross your mind that maybe there is a technical reason on why Mythic designed the graphics, animations and combat the way they did? |

The first is the lag during sieges and let me assure you that that is fixed I find that Im getting an extra 10 FPS with about an average of 30 people on screen at once (average about 20 FPS now) which isnt perfect but it is very playable. And second you can take BKs now which was the primary complaint there are some guard issues and pet issues and the LoS is not perfect yet but every patch improves it a lot! |
