I'm just cerious as to what DCU has or promises that CoH/CoV doesn't. CoH/CoV is already a game, it's already out, It already has a community, and it has a wide variety of character creation. If you ask me I can't think of one thing that DCU could do that CoH/CoV hasn't. The only thing different I think is that it's set in the DC universe and CoH/CoV is set in its own universe. This is why I ask the question as to what makes DCU better then Coh/CoV?

I love CoH/CoV, it's a great community, great gameplay, huge creation, unlockable classes, skill based, and it's already out and I already payed for the game updates and all that so why should I leave CoH/CoV for DCU? what makes it sooo much better that I should just throw away all the money I spent on CoH/CoV and spend more money for DCU?

After all this I want to see how many people are/would leave CoH/CoV for DCU

Would you leave CoH/CoV for DCU?

I don't know
I don't play CoH/CoV and I'm going to DCU
Yes I would
No I wouldn't

What makes DCUO better than COH/V, huh? Well here my answer COH/V sucks alot. Before COH/V who had ever heard of the Statesman or Ms. Liberty. Now honestly tell  me, who would you rather fight along side. Batman and Superman(Two of the greatests super heroes ever.) or the Statesman and Ms. Liberty(Which you can't even fight along side them.). Plus on the villian side The Joker and Lex Luthor are way cooler than that spider guy villian. Both City of Heroes/Villians and Champions Online will be dead, when DC Universe Online comes out. There is just no competition there. Only compettition would have been the Marvel MMO, but thats dead now. Kinda odd Marvel got canceled, but Champions Online gets made. Its one of those things that make you go, hmmmmm! Finally to be honest I could never get past level 10 in either COH or COV, both bored me by then.  So I am super-hyped at the thought of playing in citys like Gotham and fighting along side heroes like Batman in DCUO.

When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

Or if you were wanting a more serious answer... aside from the obvious IP difference of playing in a familiar, iconic world alongside NPC heroes and villains (you don't actually play the known characters yourself), one key difference that's been announced so far is a far greater interaction between, characters, their powers and their environment. Examples discussed so far include such things as turning enemies into blocks of ice with your freeze power, then picking up the frozen enemy and shattering them against a brick wall. Or using an anti-grav gun to hurl them into space. Or picking up a nearby bus and smashing them over the head with it. Or superfast characters being able to run up the sides of walls and buildings. That sorta thing.

It's pretty early days yet so I imagine it will be quite a while before a comprehensive feature list is nailed down. Just keep an eye on the usual channels I guess.

I will admit fighting in cities like gotham or metropolis will be cool or along the side of Batman or Superman or Green Arrow and dont get me wrong here, Im a huge fanboi of DC but can't you pretty much do all that in CoH/V only its different people like Statesman and Lord Recluse and your doing more like missions for them but you see them in game but once you get in the higher levels like 40-50 you can fight along the side of them or against them(Dark statesman) in some taskforces. It seems to me all DCU is is a rip off of CoH/V and doesn't have much to offer except the popularity of Batman and Superman. I'll tell you the truth I want to fight along the side of Green Arrow but I don't want to pay 50bucks to do it + the 15bucks a month(if they choose that for payment) when I can just play CoH/V and get pretty much the same game for only 15bucks and i get to keep the other 50.

This stuff all sounds really cool with the hole interaction idea but do you think they could pull it off? If they did it would probably either be more like an FPS or something we have never seen before. But these are also just their ideas and companies do throw away ideas while their developing the game their making alot. I do agree though that its kind of too early to tell what their going to do and we will have to keep our ears open.

To not conform is to conform; Always question orders and demand a reason, least you become a Nazi.

I think the main difference between DC and CoH/V is the fact they have an established and well known lore behind the game as well as iconic characters for players to interact with; while still having as many options for character creation.

Whether they manage to pull it off or not is what defines the game; Just look at AoC - they didn't manage to turn a profit after this late in the game; while warhammer is due out soon and very well could. GL to the DC team though :P

I hope thats enough for their game to take off. They definately have to come up with something really really good if they plan on succeeding.

Also there was a post earlier about Marvel giving up on their mmo and I was just cerious what people think about that. If Marvel quit do you guys think DCU will? and Why did they quit? I think its cuz they thought it would be too tough to compete with CoH/V let alone another mmo made by DC.

Marvel pulled their IP from the project (which was being made by Cryptic Studios, the guys who made CoH/V) but the game has continued without them. It's now called Champions Online, and will be using an adaptation of the (highly regarded) 80's tabletop RPG system of the same name - in many senses it promises to be something of a CoH2, but with more freedom, more customizability (you build your own power sets using a points system) and a more 'comicbook' look and feel. There's plenty of info about that game here on MMORPG.com and elsewhere, and in terms of development they are significantly further along than DCU... I believe at this stage they intend to release sometime in '09, while DCU is still some years off.

Sounds awesome especially the power system, definately gives me more of a reason to play that instead of DCU. Also im happy to hear that their are still making the game. Is it based in the marvel universe or is it like CoH/V and based in its own universe?

Champions Online is not based on any existing IP for its setting - not Marvel, not DC, not even CoH. Even though it's made by Cryptic Studios, who made CoH, it's a completely new start.

You can't forget the big thing that makes DCU worst than CoX. SOE is making DCU. If there is one thing you can count on with SOE, they will be sure to provide you with a crappy game. Even if they accidentally make something good, they have no problem destroying it after release.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Yes, that is something else that DCU will have that Champions Online won't - a rabid following of bitter SWG vets baying for Sony's blood and unable to let it go even after all these years. Sad really.

Wrong. Get your facts straight before you start throwing around answers. Champions Online is based on the very popular and successful tabletop RPG game made in the 80's.

SOE is one of my biggest fears with this game. They ruin every game they touch. They completely destroyed SWG and then didn't fix it. They still haven't fixed it. They really are that ignorant and stupid. They also ruined the Matrix with their terrible MMO representation of it. They had an awful launch with Vanguard Saga of Heroes. They continually prove that they are not good with MMOs.

For the record, Star Wars Galaxies is the only game Sony ever really screwed the pooch on, and that was as much at Lucasarts' directive (joint development) as their own, and it was years ago. They have since admitted their mistake and moved on, unlike all the sad angry pre-NGE vets who still feel it's their moral duty to flame anything Sony Online Entertainment touches.

Matrix Online was a crap game already when SOE bought it from the original makers, they didn't actually have a hand in its development. Same goes for Vanguard, which initially they were only distributing, and most current Vanguard players (few though they are) agree that Sony was the best thing that ever happened to that disastrous game once they took it over and began fixing & updating it. Everquest and Everquest 2, both developed by SOE, are still widely regarded as two of the more successful MMOs and enjoy a fairly decent population size compared to most current titles (not including WoW of course, which skews all the statistics).

That's why I get bored when I see ignorant tools, many of whom have never even played a SOE game, jumping on the Sony Is The Antichrist bandwagon either out of a misplaced sense that hating the company will somehow give them more internet gaming forum street cred (get a life), or because they still can't let go of their broken Star Wars dreams of yesteryear (get a life). Ignoring them won't make them go away, but listening to them won't leave you any wiser or better informed and actually talking to them is an exercise in futility.

As I said in an earlier post. But as I recall the Champions tabletop RPG didn't come with much in the way of a background storyline, just a core rule set, hence the lack of (or at least fairly open) IP for the setting.

Admitted their mistake, sort of, but fixed it? Not even close. The fact that it was indeed years ago and the game is still a steaming pile of crap is scarier than if they screwed it up yesterday and still hadn't had the chance to fix it yet.

Seems to me that only an ignorant tool would stick up for a company that has absolutely no problem pissing on their customers and telling them it's raining. Truth is  you should be thanking anyone and everyone that gives Sony the dogging they deserver. If it wasn't for us, and the NGE came without much of an uproar, that would have opened the door to every other gaming company out there to change the core mechanics of their game after release without a care in the world for their player base. Our uproar showed everyone in the MMO industry that the players  wouldn't stand for actions like this, and we spoke with our feet. You should be thanking us, not spouting some crap about how we need to be getting a life. Ignoring the past with a company like SOE is the most ignorant thing you can do.

For god's sake, get some perspective. Yeah OK, the angry SWG vets saved the world for gamers everywhere by sticking it to The Man, Sony learned their lesson, and life goes on. Except that you and so many others like you are still harping on about it as though it was your mission in life. SOE paid its debt to society for its mistake (by losing all its potential revenue from what should have been a successful, flagship game), yet people like you seem completely unable to believe that they can (and have) change(d). Maybe your tinfoil hat is obscuring your perception of reality.
The reason that Star Wars hasn't been 'fixed' is that there just isn't the money in it. Clearly you believe that Sony owes some sort of Debt of Honour to all the bitter and broken fans, that it's their chivalric duty to make proper amends. Wake up. The reality is that those few people who still play the game do so because they enjoy (or at least accept) it as it is. Pouring millions more hours of dev time into a game this old is extremely unlikely to yield any significant boost to sub numbers, so there's no logical reason to do so (especially now that Bioware has declared their Star Wars MMO is in development). Sony, just like every other company in the world, is there to make money for its shareholders. It is not a charity.
Given that this is the case, it is ridiculous and close-minded to think that SOE would somehow sabotage its future earning potential by making the same mistake again. I'm no particular fan of Sony myself, but I can see that labelling a game "destined to fail" because it's being developed by a company who, apart from one (albeit major) error in judgement is an experienced and reliable MMO developer is ignorant indeed.
But enough hijacking of this thread... back to your regular viewing.

What makes DCU better than CoH/CoV?

Why would I want to fight alongside a bunch of spandexed superhero's who don't have their own comic books? That has always been my reason for not touching the 'City Of' games. I'm sure they're great games, but without any relevance to the books I've been reading for over 20 years, I just don't see the point. That said Bats is the only superhero DC has had thats ever grabbed my attention, I'd rather have had Marvel. How about an MMO based on the creations of Alan Moore? :P

I just thought about it, DC is offering us a "Universe" of potential as opposed to City Of's, city.

Ah well its all hype and Public Enemy told me many years ago not to believe it.

You could be right with this statement here. Something DCU can offer that CoH/V doesn't have is the universe effect; we could have vigilantes, bountyhunters, plus our heroes and villians and they could add the story part to the game by creating more cities in the universe. They could add loads and loads more factions instead of being stuck with heroes and villians. I also never realized that in the tittle I just thought the game placed you in the DC universe but they could play off of this and litterally make it a never ending universe. They may do this stuff but this is just my thoughts on what they could offer that CoH/V doesn't.( besides the fact that you can fight along the side of GL or Bats)

I must admit I'd rather have Marvel Universe Online. It could have some awesome expansions. Age of Apocalypse; House of M; Civil War even. But then destroying the Teen Titans would be fun too. If this does well then who knows it might get resurrected.

Time will tell

but it sounds like Champions RPG lore will be used

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champions_Online

Champions NPCs

Classic heroes and villains from the Champions universe will serve as major NPCs.

I would really like to see an MMO based on Moore's Top Ten. That comic just sort of lent itself to an MMO. Everyone's got powers, gates to alternate worlds like an inter-dimensional airport, social centers for different themes of heroes (the Gods bar and speedster raves come to mind), they even had racism against robots.

I wouldn't mind seeing sort of BPRD themed MMO either, but it would be much harder to get a game like that right IMO.

Top 10 was good, but I only own the first graphic novel. I'm interested in seeing where it's going but not enough to buy the rest of the books.

I'm going to don some brightly coloured spandex and check out the free trial of CoV for a laugh.
