Many of the new "MMOs" put the graphics ante up quite a bit for other the games of the same genre. The sad truth is, that most seem of the MMOs sacrifice the first capital M to graphics. This pretty much started a tail spin to worser and worser MMOs, as the outlook was deemed superior to the actual content, to lure the new gamers in and get a big hype. There are many examples to be had, with the battleground solutions and such. If you actually want consensual PvP to a game, it cannot be limited by the graphics. Also, from what I hear, the newest Darkfall video was shot on medium graphics settings. I'm not sure if this is just a rumour going around, as I would personally deem it kind of odd. Anyway, if this statement holds any ground, it defeats many arguments. Darkfall definitely does not follow this guideline, as this is not what MMORPGs should be all about. There indeed is a reason why most of the Darkfall fans do indeed prefer UO over AoC. On the last note, I personally don't have any monster gaming rig. I doubt everyone has them, either. There is a reason why WoW for example had quite low polygon graphics. So that everyone could run the game smoothly, even on a mediocre computer! They didn't want the game to give advantage to people who have the money to spend on a great computer and a lagfest for others.

While graphics can certainly put a restriction on things, there is no excuse for Darkfall looking as bad as it does now. Lineage 2, while lacking customization, put hundreds of characters on screen during raids and PVP castle sieges and it looks signficantly better than Darkfall. Lineage 2 was released for the first time in 2003, Darkfall will probably be released in 2009 ~ 2010 and thats me beign optimistic. Imo, Darkfalls graphics look like they were made with one of those free "create your own game" toolsets. |

There'll always be people whinning about graphics, they're the ones to want to sit on their butts, in front of the computer, and play a pretend life. And since Darkfall only seems to be like that, except it's like Medieval, then that's all Darkfall is for. So they want really nice graphics, then they can have the life on the computer that they didn't have a chance in on RL....

Its more of the bad platform darkfall is running than their actual graphics. Shitty platform = Shitty graphics and sadly, with a crappy platform, everything else becomes crappy.

Df gfx and animations are of late 1990's vintage and are simply basic and ugly... and there is no excuse bar a lack of talent in DF team. Darkfall makes EQ1 (at release) look next gen. |

I could care less about graphics, give me gameplay every time. However the graphics in that video were like a downgraded version of shadowbane, I'd think they can do a bit better than that. I'm still not buying that the game isn't going to be the next AOC but the trailer was interesting enough to put the game on the radar for me at least. |

I just can't play a game this ugly, not after playing Assasins Creed, Uncharted, MGS4... I know they are single player games, but there is only so much a person can tolerate when we're talking about MMO compromises.

Additionally, the gameplay is first person shooter controls with full pvp and full loot and farming and crafting and house building, and city building, and resource farming, and on and on. There isn't another game on the market with this. Not one. |

You need to look past the dramatic position of the camera. www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/21867 These are the screenshots released by the company that made Dark & light. now browse on the internet and look what the game really looks like. The screenshots look like that because they are taken from a "dramatic angle", leaving out the bad looking things. |

I'm talking specifically about the graphics, in this thread. Anyway, I do agree that some of the animations (or the lack of them) are not really pleasing to the eye. The fact is, that some of the animations could be fixed with a little amount of work. The walking and running animations seem to be out of sync in some cases, too. Anyway, those are details which can be fixed with time, through patches. Remember, the video was pre-beta raw material. |

Good enough? Also, you can spot the difference between DnL and DF, even from the pictures you linked. |

They certainly help it though in some cases.
my biggest issue is the horrendous animations and effects, nothing looks believable -the walking/running and jumping all look fake -they are not fluid at all- -The explosions are laughable -there is no power behind the explosions- -The spells look like they have no backing what so ever -the few buffs were just colored circles around the character -nothing special.. and the bolts were just bolts of magic -hell little balls of magic that looked laughable- ========= At least in Asherons call the spells had effects -your acid bolt trailed particles behind it- -your fireballs trailed smoke and the hit effects were worth it- -your weapons could have fire/ice/lightning/acid and had particles that represented those effects -like dripping acid or flaming swords- ========= Now I saw in the video some glowing weapons (the yellow glow/blue i think as well) but that was it. |

Lotharr, seriously, were those screenshots supposed to aid your argument? The textures look really terrible, and the game lacks shadows. I think there are some small shadows are behind the characters in the first screenshots but thats all. |

The video had some shadows cast from trees, but I'm actually not sure I saw much cast by buildings/the environment -perhaps theres a player shadow and structure shadow option?-
