I'm a big skill based sandbox fan. Ive been messing around with eve for a while now and recently heard that a game called The saga of Ryzom has been put back online. This game is a premier sandbox MMO, this game has pvp, deep crafting and much more. It's also free to try right now, hell... might as well be f2p the devs haven't given us a date when billing will start. So goto the site and try this game out seriously. You will be glad you did.
Why would I play a pathetic themepark MMO when I could enjoy a masterpiece like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age? |

It said there were only 55 accounts left after I signed up, so hurry while they're available. |

Darn, was going to try this game but there are no more accounts.

It's definitely worth a try, especially now that it's free. Don't judge it before you've left the starter island - trust me on that one. |

Thanks a million for the tip and ty as well Lydon. I definitely want to give this game a shot as it looked interesting from the descriptions I've read here. I have been drifting in MMO land since SWG went to pot. I like Eve alot but have had a hard time making friends in that game so it gets a little boring for me. Hopefully this will feed my addiction. =)

Ditto. The starter island is NOTHING like the regular game. Once you get into the game proper it is a really bid sandbox with no one leading you by the hand. |

I'm downloading it now. It looks really cool :D |

Just as an update I was able to sign up for an account yesterday and dl'd the game. I am still in noobie land but I really had fun yesterday. Good community, good game play, and I am already seeing that this game has a ton of depth. 1 cool thing to mention that I was like, "WOW" to was while I was standing next to someone at a quest giver. While they stood idle the toon is of course fidgeting in place when all of a sudden he takes the sword in his hand and tosses it in the ground out of boredom. That took me off guard and was kind of a neat little thing to see.

I argue with half my brain tied behind my back, just to make it fair. |
Is there player looting in PvP? Is there any benefit to being a PKer in the game? |

thought I would give this a try again. I tried this in Nov 2006 and couldn't get past the "loading screen" after you select/create your character. So I have my account still as they made it Free (was a trial I signed up for in 06) D/L newest client, patch, logon and see my level 1 character still there from 11/06. Cool, click login... Same issue as 2006. ROFL. So I go to the forums to see if anyone else has this problem. After reading some threads, it turns out this game engine sucks so bad the networking stack times out if you try to logon using anything other than the LOWEST textures. So I set everything to LOW and try again. This time Success!! I am in! The graphics look like crap, and the game isn't even cool from a pure client perspective. The mechanics are cool. The cool features in the game are: -) You draw and quarter the corpses to get animal parts. The same animal parts pretty much everytime. This is so much better than random eyes, teeth and ears dropping as loot. -) Game is open sandbox style That is where it ends. EQ1 looks and runs better, so what I think these guys need to do to give their users a serious chance at growing the community? Replace the Client with a revamped/modern one and upgrade the server/client networking stack.

Despite being 4 years old, Ryzom by far trumps many of today's MMOs in the graphics department. Comparing it to EQ1 is laughable...there's no comparison at all. |

You didn't read carefully. Many posted having the same problem ONLY WITH Ryzom. I know you want more users to build the dying community, but don't discount truth in order to achieve that goal. It is similar to a preacher discounting science to get members. Once the people arrive, they find out for themselves anyway; you merely waste their time. |

The "many" people experiencing the problem is a very small percentage of the community. Why should the devs alter the client so that that small portion of people can play? Obviously there's some sort of conflict on your system with Ryzom. It's rather naive to think that they'd do such a thing. They're running a business after all. |

Running a business is tricky. One thing I have learned is that more people move on then people who take the time to report an issue. Addtionally, only 2 percent of people who read message boards actually post on them. So the posting people make up 2% of the opinion of the population. Based on these facts, if you have a thread of 30 people claiming to have the exact same issue with one game out of dozens and dozens of MMOs, etc. You actually have a larger problem then you are admitting with the client. Most people will move on, some will check the forums and find a solution and only 2% of those people will post about it. After doing the math that 30 people is more like 6000+. |
|
|
I'm sorry, but you can't just assume that those figures are correct.
Secondly, the chances of someone with a problem posting is far greater than someone who is not experiencing a problem simply because of the fact that they are experiencing a problem and need help with it.
Also, I doubt Ryzom has 300 000 players all of a sudden (according to your math (2% = 6000 people). If it did it wouldn't have failed in the first place, so your numbers need a little work.
I'm not denying there's a problem, but the scale on which you're making it out to be is far greater than what it really is. I've never heard of such a problem in my life. |

I heard of Ryzom about some weeks ago, started playing it and must say, its ok..xD I have tried a lot of mmorpgs, because i like the spirit of the genre but have to admit that i didnt play most of the nearly 30 mmorpgs i tried longer than a week coz they kinda bored me..i am very dissapointed from the mmo market, 90 % crap in my eyes, just a chat client with a bad game as a mantle..(i am going somewhere with that, dont worry xD) MMOs i liked are 1:Lotro 2:Eve 3:UO 4:Eq2 5: Eudemons 6: Saga of Ryzom 7: Meridian 59 All others, even HQ ones like Guildwars or WoW didnt appeal to me in the long run....................what i want to say with all that is, as you can propably see, for me factors like sandbox or not and the like doesnt matter, its a gut feeling, if everything seems ok, or if it just appeals me ill play it. ok btt......Saga of Ryzom is nice. its fresh in its design, the whole world feels a bit alive and i get the feeling, even if i dont chat, that i am part of a community, the grafics are acceptable, actually they are nice.....stating they are worse than eq1 is just ridicolous....the game has a good sandbox feeling. Biggest negative point is, that to me it has a quiet grindy game-mechanic, grind to skill fighting, grind ressources to skill up collecting, repeatedly create stuff to skill up crafting (thats grinding to me too in that extend as it is done in ryzoms crafting system)......dont get me wrong, i am not against grinding in generel, but the way ryzom is designed, its look, its feel, the design of the mobs, the fact they dont drop anything except mats (as far as i can tell) is NOT suited for a grinding mechanic in my eyes...thats why Ryzom tires me fast, but keeps me want commin back, thinking of: come on one skillpoint, come on i need to find that mat and so on. I play it in a casual gamestyle, which keeps me liking it coz of my personal live........it surely is a unique game with lots of unusual features (thinking of some mats can only be harvested while its raining in autum for example). Its the only game i play atm. I wish the community a healthy basis and a rapid growing. peace out |

well the first few weeks of ryzom was pretty nice community wise, but recently the hordes of wow players looking for the next wow have come in. Conversations are now arguments over which mmo is best ect. The game really isnt that sandbox...at all...you have no set level which is nice but you really have to skill fighter/magic/crafting/and foraging to really build a good character. I found myself having trouble fighting mobs that i should have been able to kill easily at my level as a fighter...my problem...i had neglected using magic to kill mobs and crafting and foraging for crafting materials. This means there really is only one way to go when making your character...everything. Finding this out really ruined the sandbox feel of being able to do anything i wanted. See when you "ding" a skill type by using it you get 10 points that can purchase what amounts to your active and passive skills (passive being more hp and other skill based pools). SO by neglecting a certain skill type your missing out on rasing stats, as well as skills related to that skill type. If you are a mage and neglect fighting mobs with weapons to skill fighter, you will have abysmal hp and hp regen, as well as weak self heals and buffs, vise versa your fighter will be missing out on the same hp/regen skills as well as weapon enhancment buffs and other stats. Gameplay reminded me of Anarchy Online. Magic skills are all basically one animation reskinned, Fighting animations are based on weapon and sometimes dont even show (i hit mob but am still staning still) The enviroment is really something though, it did feel like a living planet with migrating herds of animals, predators and prey. Very beautiful scenery. Im really not trying to knock the game, it just seems that everything written about the game seems to skip past what i mentioned and focuses on "its a sandbox" and "it has a beautiful setting/living planet" All in all its a good game if thats your thing, its not a game on easy mode. Not sure about later levels but the game really reminds me of Anarchy Online in that it has a lot of decent content and character building but lacked on animations and gameplay. I was kinda just turned off on the having to be a fighter/mage/crafter/forager or be gimped thing. Also the community is on a downward spiral. Try the game though, it needs people to survive and definatly is in a niche of game types that is rather untouched by mainstream games, definatly worth a try, just dont expect a reskinned wow experience. |

Somehow I had a feeling this post would show up :) Ok, first of all the having to skill up on all four trees isn't true at all. Check those skill trees again you will notice the passive skills are in every tree. Lets say you want level 1 cons which increases Health if ur a fighter you train it in the fighting tree. Now if you look in the magic tree Cons level 1 is no longer in the magic tree it is replaced by level 2. Basically you have the freedom to level attributes in any tree you can, not grab the same level of every attribute skill in each tree that would be stupid. This game doesn't force you to skill up in everything.
You say you had trouble fighting mobs at your fighting level because of attributes? maybe it was due to lack of quality armor or a weapon your fight level? Were you fighting 4 and 5 star blue mobs cause those are above level 50 skill. I'm sorry but you can not just simply walk into a creature much higher skill level than you and expect to win. In no sandbox MMO can you expect to walk in every area at a very low skill level and not feel restricted due to mob difficulty. Mainland in ryzom is challenging It's a nice change of pace from the mentally challenged focused linear mmo's of today.
Now the community is getting larger and with it brings the normal riff raff any mmo would have. This is what the /ignore function is for. I find the community helpful and my guild has helped me tremendously. My friends list is about 30 players long since i realized right away this game would be more enjoyable in a group.
You say the spell animations look reskined? did you have problems putting this game on high settings? Last time i checked fear and acid bolt looked nothing alike, Cold and rot looked totally different. I will agree Ryzoms game world is wonderful to look at and the mob AI is spectacular atleast that part of your review is correct.
I'm sorry but this post seems like you spent a couple hours playing and decided you didn't like that the game was hard so you totally wrote it off. If you would of said the game felt too grindy for you then I would of agreed but to say that this isn't a real sandbox due to Mod difficulty restriction thats just telling me you want the game dumbed down and I'm sure the rest of the community will disagree with you.
