I didn't pre-order, didn't follow the forums, just bought it because I wanted to see if it was any good. It's not the bugs or the quests. The game isn't fun. you can't explore ... the zones are more eye candy than mass. Very little social interaction, the towns seem dead ... zoning. Combat ... more buttons to push, not more skill needed. The most boring armor seen yet in a major mmo . The game does look good. No major problems running it. Just thinking about it, thats the major thing I liked about the game, and the 1 - 20 story line was very good. This is one I will not go back to, The things I don't like about this game can't be patched. I enjoy an attempt to bring the world to life by the devs, to give me more than combat and quests. can I fish, can I run to that mountian and find a cave to explore? What about hanging out in town after a long quest to just watch other players goofing and having fun. just not alot to do here except run along the path to a quest. |

No voices after having everything voiced till lvl 20 is a big letdown yes. What killed it for me and i think many others is the solo play and linearity of the game. That ofcourse with all the promised content being in the game and not actually being there. Plus all the bugs and annoyances of the content never arriving and new patches not fixing things but breaking instead ! I mean aoc lets you group up for first time at lvl 36 or so. Thats about half way to the level cap. That'll be your first real dungeon. Kinda sad. Then also all dungeons are annoying. They either give very little challenge or the respawn rate is insanely fast, wipe once and you have to clean the same mobs you clearned 5 or 10 mins ago to get to the point where you died. Then ofcourse the linear play in which you only follow paths and you constantly have the feeling you are playing in a large box since in every single zone you can actually see the box shape of the zone by the mountains in the distance which follow a square line no matter where you are. There's nothing else to do but quests quests quests and thats it. Then every few lvls , after 40, you are faced with having to grind for materials all over again for the next craft tier. Also very boring. Its like you are contantly grinding for materials since you lvl so damn fast that 10 lvls means nothing. Even worse, ever lvl ding means nothing coz you hop from 1 lvl to the next constantly at high speed. Whoever did their market research to what a consumer is looking for in an MMORPG should get his ass fired coz funcom seems to really have no clue what mmorpg players want and went way overboard with lvling speed, linearity, instanced zones etc etc. Also besides some names of zones etc you dont feel at all like you are in the conan world. The whole set up of the game is made for all emersion to be killed and makes you feel bored very fast. Not to mention bugs like stats not working or even be displayed which is pretty pathetic, lvl 20 gear being better then lvl 50 gear. This meaning gear basically means nothing since you cant really tell what bonus it gives you anyway. Nothing to 'build' your char. I could go on and on. I did actually like the combat system though but i never did pvp, since i was on a pve server where pvp is totally non existend with deserted pvp zones and minigames, but i can imagine the combat system sux for pvp. I also did like how the classes worked etc. They seemed original and diverse. AOC had its good points just it has way to many bad points to enjoy it. Its funny how funcom thought they could make easy money with fast lvling, pretty graphics, simple linear gameplay and so on and ended up flat on their face. They are just one of the companies that failed since wow release and thought they could hook into what wow seemed to have done right, a new mmorpg market where the big bucks are. Im happy they failed. God forbid they succeeded. It would have meant the end of mmorpgs as we used to know it and we would all be stuck to console style mmorpgs with very little content and boring gameplay.

Yes, if you are thinking of trying out a new game I think you'll enjoy it :D I didn't follow the progress of this game very closely during development, and had decided after initial enthusiasm that it was probably not for me - on the basis of some early screenshots I had seen that didn't exactly fill me with wonder. However I was considering looking for a new game at the time that AoC went live and decided to give it a try - and I'm very glad I did! I've been trying out the different character classes and races, so have not progressed far enough to encounter some of the concerns that some players seem to have about content, etc. But what I would say is that the game has quite a unique style and feel that I personally find a refreshing change after the many human / dwarf / elf fantasy genre games I've played before. I took part in the beta for the now sadly defunct Gods and Heroes, and AoC reminds me in some ways of that game (but without the horrendous stability issues that that game had). The graphics are great, the combat is fun - I'd certainly give it a try :) |

I did follow the game and I have the CE. But because I live in Japan and because I moved apartment (took another month for internet set-up) I didn't start playing until 6 weeks maybe after launch. And then I was real busy so I could only play a few hours every second day. If your casual, like me then you will love the game. I still don't understand a lot of the hate heaped on this game btw, I really don't. The more intelligent haters complain about endgame (fair enough, I aint there yet and they may have a point), but I see hate for all levels, or levels post 20, or levels post 40, or post 50...and when I go beyond those levels (I am lv 55) I am expecting the game to turn to turd but it doesnt...it remains good and so I still dont see what all the hate is about. I was told that is was buggy mess. Well, not for me. I have the gray map memory leak issue but I can live with it as I just quickly re-log when it happens. In fact, I found lv1-20 the most disappointing. I only started to really like it post 20 when I had more freedom. The combat is ace. I have played many mmorpgs and - for melee classes - it really is different from other games. It DOES NOT in anyway feel like a button mash as there are time-gaps between combo-buttons, and you choose the combos based upon the enemy shields and on what effect you wish to activate. You have to think more, especially when you are taking on mobs. I have enjoyed, nay loved, combat from 1-55. The combat has a more immersive, visceral feel...thumping clumps out of the enemy, your swings damaging nearby enemies...and the fatality-kills never get boring. They are different for edged and blunt wpns so change weapon at some point for variety. Best combat I have seen in any mmorpg yet. Graphics are sweet as. Combined with the music, it is amazing. PVE...Sanctum of Burning Souls is ace and you will need to group for quests that involve non-dungeon elites at many points between lv30-45. You do need to group and you will need a guild as the group-find function is the one really disappointing point of this game. The group-find UI just doesn't work or maybe I haven't mastered it...but I wasn't able to get groups until I was in a guild. So join a big guild. Following the game pre-launch is not the issue, getting beyond all the hate posts and giving it a try yourself is. Now one last point. The more credible haters have admitted to me that they ENJOYED the game to lv 70 and only started hating after that. Well, if like me, it will take 6-8 weeks to get to lv 80 (maybe more) then even the haters are admitting that you will like it. Regards Melmoth |

This is utterly ridiculous to say such a thing as "the more credible haters". Just because i hated the game by lvl 36 makes me less credible, or is it credible in your opinion. Besides why would anyone buy and play a game they have been told by many they ll hate wether it s at lvl 1 or end game. It makes no sense to me at all. As poster i quoted said the combat is ace, i HATED it. Why because i spent more time watching a damn box or boxes pop on my screen then the actual fight. Graphics yes are nice but in a fantasy world i don t care for real i get enough of that in RL. Anyways try a trial and see for yourself and less us know who is more credible :) |
