The only thing I hate about Warhammer is that I am having a hard time choosing a class and side.  My top choices so far are:

Order:  witch hunter, white lion, warrior priest, Sword Master

Destro: Witch Elf, Marauder, DoK, Black Orc

As you can see I prefer melee!  But I still like the ranged classes as well like the BW and Sorc.

Does anyone else have this problem with not being able to decide?  :(

Lots of times what sounds like a fun class really isn't, because it doesn't match your play style. I suck at playing ranged DPS, although it always looks like a cool class, because I hate standing back, and always want to be in the action, which is exactly where a squishy ranged DPS class shouldn't be.

Play them all, and see which one fits your playstyle best.

I have the same problem.

Order: Brightwizard, Witch Hunter, Engineer, Shadow Warrior

Destro: DoK, Marauder, Black Orc, Squig herder

Now I choose Destro. BUT now I don't know which class I want to play first at launch. =(

After a while, I decided to choose destruction, because my friends choose destro.

Maybe you should ask your friends what they will play. If your friends are going to play it.

Play on 2 servers...Go all order on one server and all Destruction on the other.....Create at least one character of each type (ie healer, tank, ranged dps, caster) and play them to at least level 20......

It's pretty easy for me, I'll play a healing type as my main and run several alts to vary play style for enjoyment.  It's slower for advancement, but more fun for me in the long run.

As far as whether I will prefer Order or Destruction, I will pick which ever side is least populated on the server I'm playing.  Since Order and Destruction have close counterpart classes on each side, it shouldn't be too hard to work through the which side to play issue.  The issue is whether you are fixated on one particular class/race combination, or if not, then whether you want to join the zerg or the underdogs.

I hope this helps.

I wish 'Witch Elf' could be male or female.  That's a big issue I have at the moment.  I refuse to play a female character in any game.  From what I've seen, the Witch Elf seems pretty great, but I'm not going to cave.  I really wish Black Guard was still available, but since it's not... I don't see much in the way of Dark Elf that draws me to that race anymore.

On the other side of that factional coin...

I enjoyed playing Shadow Warrior quite a bit.  I must say that Witch Hunter was also pretty fun as well.  I found a lot of survivability in Shadow Warrior though, and that's what I spent 90% of my time playing in the preview weekend.  (for the record, no, I didn't name him Legolassss or any variation of the sort.)  A lot of people feel as though Shadow Warrior is a squishy, I just didn't really find that to be true at all.  I know that vs some classes, they weren't quite as well matched... but that's the paper/rock/scissors mechanics of any MMORPG at play.

Noted:  with NPC pathing and behavior somewhat 'broken', Shadow Warrior did have an advantage and that may change the way I feel about the class in PVE play once NPC/PVE mob behavior is fixed.  I could essentially hit any mob and they would run the other way at first.  This gave me time to unload some dmg on them, then mezz them/root them, then ping away, usually finishing them off just as they hit my melee range.  Also, I could pull very well with Shadow Warrior and didn't find myself having to get into aggro range of other mobs just to pull/kill the things I needed to kill.  There were also times when I needed to kill bolt-throwers or seige-esque weapons and I could do that from a pretty safe range without being aggro'd by mobs.  (that may be due to bugged aggro?  i dunno)

In PvP/RvR battles as a Shadow Warrior, I could stay on the outskirts of the battle and plunk away at targets from long range.  If someone looked like they were about to break away from the group (enemy clump of targets) then I could start in with dmg on them and soften them up before they got into their dmg dealing range.

I tried playing another ranged DPS class, but I just didn't care much for them.  I think Magus was the closest I came to actually liking any of those 'caster' type classes.  I have yet to hit cap level in any MMORPG playing a cloth/caster class.  I guess it's just not my cup-o-tea.

I typically play a class that has at least some ability to heal and find good survivability that way.  In WoW I played a Shaman (elemental) and a Druid (feral)... both classes can obviously heal themselves in a pinch (or someone else if I'm feeling generous).  In SWG I played Jedi with a MLS/MDef template with some Healing (limited as it was, it was enough to keep me from ever dying at the hands of a BH) and my BH was MBH with CM.   I found that those classes were very 'solo' friendly in times when I just couldn't find a group to do the things I wanted to do in game.  I think that Shadow Warrior, even sans the heal, is that type of class in WAR for me.... at least from what I've seen and played so far.

Do you have any 20-sided dice laying around?

The hardest part will be finding a list of classes you can make of 1-20 to roll with.

I have that same problem! I want to play Order for sure but i dont know if i want to play as a warrior priest, ironbreaker, shadow warrior, or engineer. I like b eing in the front fighting people off, but i always liked how the ranged dps'ers looked, such as the engineers with there rifles. I would rather be in the front but i know i'll also have to enventually be on defense, such as defending a keep or something. I think in that case it would be better to have a rifle and good ranged damage and be able to shoot down on your enemies!

haha too many choices!

It's pointless to listen to someone who will not listen to you

I choose a ranged class simply because it is really dangerous playing one in WAR.  I just get a rush when I know that if X class gets within 10 feet of me, my chance of survival drops some 90%   It puts this anxiety into playing that always has me looking behind my character and not just assuming my ranged position is safe.  I know melee is no cake walk but I just prefer the challenges ranged classes present this go round.

My advice.  Take each class you're interested in into RvR.  Be it level 1 or lvl 30 queue up for a scenario and see how you enjoy it.  It's safe to assume, in most cases, that they character will only get better in terms of roots, damage, etc. so it's a pretty good gauge of what to expect.

One big deciding factor for me was mouse/keyboard setup.  I've never been a master at hotkeys and have always used a mouse click / hotkey setup which has some pretty severe setbacks.  As such, my melee efficiency suffers greatly (about a 20-25% drop in PvP effectiveness due to response time) so that too was a factor.

The last factor that always determines character selection for me is the "swagger," of each class.  Each class has a distinct coolness to it that naturally draws you in.  For me the BW's finger snap with fire cages and incinerate it just too pimp not to have.  The following is a narrative of me in RvR screaming at my computer screen which let me know I had found my class:

This is gon burn baby!!!  Are ya ready...ya ready..huh?  Ya ready *explicative* (cast spell)  BOOM *explicative* and down goes Frazier - DOWN GOES FRAZIER!!!

I mean sometimes ya just know.

For retail I am going to likely stick with Witch Hunter but I want to try out more classes during OB.

I am just afraid we are going to see like we did in Preview Weekend where Order was massively outnumbered. For every man Order put on the PVP grounds, Destruction had 5. It was pretty ridiculous.

That's an impressive amount of homophobia...to equate staring at a man to reading gay porn.  You should REALLY take a step back sometime and re-evaluate why it is you even feel that way.  No flame, just...I actually HAVE a friend that wouldn't watch a normal porn because he "didn't want to see the guys" in it.  He had to watch woman on woman stuff.

I cannot FATHOM having such insecurities and self fear.  If a naked man walked past me right this moment, I wouldn't even be taken aback!  I'd most likely high five him for having the balls to do it.

But, eh...to each his own.  I've noticed that MMo players DO fall into two groups when it comes to what sex they play, though.  Those that view the game as an interactive movie...and those that view the character as a virtual representation of what they wish they could be.  I fall into the latter, so....I tend to make male only characters.  On a side note, I also prefer "in the back" characters because they play on my own personal, real life, strengths.   Those types of character tend to rely more on forethought and planning...and I find that much more representative of myself.

All men that play male Characters in MMORPGs are gay, everyone knows that.

Of course, everyone also knows that all men that play female characters want a sex change operation, so they don't have to look at their own penis, because it would make them feel gay.

I think of my MMORPG characters as 'clothing' or a 'costume', so to speak.  I am stepping into that 'role' when I am logged in and playing the game.

That being said:

I don't want to RP as a woman.

I don't want other male players to try to inerract with me as if I were female.

Would I really want to spend all that time raiding and levelling just to get new high heels, a skirt, and a bikini top?

I've heard the 'if I'm playing all the time and having to look at my character, i'd rather look at a female' type of phrase a lot.  So, IRL, you have to shower (man washing man parts) and get ready in a mirror (man checking out a man), does that mean you end up getting an operation so that you can check out a woman when you shower and have to look in the mirror?

Always an engrossing topic.  I used to make characters that resembled me closely as if I were put in that world myself.  For some reason that just "did" it for me, so I would always play male characters with decent solo ability.

One day my best friend was creating a new character for a game we were playing.  I was creating the me-lookalike version and he was creating some female animal-ish thing that was completely unlike himself and he looked at me and said.  "Why are you creating a normal human, you play a normal human in real life, this is a fantasy game.  Be something else or I'm gunna hit you in the face."

From that day on I pretty much made whatever other character I thought was either A) underplayed or B) had a good playstyle.

So I'm thinking I'll give witchelf a try

Interesting theories about sexuality and character choice here.  I'm a married heterosexual male, and most frequently I choose female in game avatars.  I do enjoy the role playing challenge of playing across gender type, but mainly I pick female chars because if 90% of my game time involves staring at the ass of a particular character, I'd rather stare at a shapely woman's ass than a guy's ass.  This doesn't make me homosexual, or homophobic, it's just a matter of my scenery preference as a heterosexual male.  Of course I've watched probably most ot the spectrum of legally produced pornography types (all adult actors, no animals, etc.), and I generally prefer straight guy on girl sex as this seems to be the most natural form of sexual expression to suit my tastes (though my visual preferences lean towards Asian women and my wife is Asian).

That being said, those people who refuse to ever play a cross gender character strike me as people who have possible hang-ups about their sexual identity.  It's possible that they are either compensating for latent homosexual urges by being "extra macho" in their choice of entertainment (WWF, and monster trucks), or they are so afraid that someone might hit on them in game or accuse them of homosexuality that they act in a homophobic manner about sticking with their own gender.  It's also possible that any kind of Role playing is viewed as unfun or too much of a intellectual challenge, and they only play characters close to their personality type.

My approach when guys "hit" on my character in game is to play the "mother" kind of character as opposed to the "sex vixen".  If someone pushes the point I will "whisper" them that I'm a dude, and I don't want to "cyber" with them.  That usually conclusively ends any issues, and teaches the randy dudes who "cyber" in MMORPGs that they shouldn't presume player gender or sexual preference by character type.

I hope this helps.

p.s. If you run into Annegrelez or Dykestra in the game, say hello.

Again, it's also true that I doubt that any female character in game is really played by an IRL female.

I treat everyone as an equal in MMO's.  Some people give preferential treatment to fem toons, not me.  I imagine that all fem toons are played by 30-40 year old, pale, fat, balding, and reclusive men that play from the darkest of corners in their mothers basement.

There was player that was in my guild in WoW, they only played fem characters.  They always spoke as if they were fem.... emotes and all of that (bouncy... yah!... always excited... always saying 'honey' and stuff to people').  Then, one night this player attended a raid for the first time.  Of course they logged into vent.  We're all getting ready for the raid... and someone says 'Can I get fort?' in a pretty deep voice.  And, nobody knew who said it.  We had to ask.. and I don't think we'd ever laughed that hard at anything else in the game before or since that.

...

I still wish that Witch Elf male was offered as a playable option.

I am always designing characters with odd personalities to use in stories.  Most of those characters are female.  There are a few male characters.  When I play an MMO game I like to make my avatars very simular to the characters I have designed.  I use the same names and personalities for each character.  Depending on the game I'll make certain characters and skip others.

It ends up most of my more interesting characters I roleplay are females that break the rules of the typical RP girl.  So I ususally play females more.  But if a game comes around, like WAR, with a class that is insanely decked out in armor and death (aka the Chosen) I will make my ultimate male character, Gressnor.

In this game I MUSt make a female Runepriest, a Chosen, and a Female DOK for my RP.  I also thought of a new persona to play for Squig hunter and will make that class also.

My biggest choice is, will I make my Order and Destruction characters on the same server or move them to separate servers?

That ones easy. They aren't going to let you have both sides on the same server. You won't get a choice :)

I will have to roll order on one server and Destro on another. Probably do Core rule set for both.

But as for classes I can't make my mind up which I want to be at all. There's 5 or 6 classes on each side I like the sound of but I'm leaning towards detruction for the art-style.

But I have this feeling that it will be massively over populated, with a lot of kids and a lot of people wanting the easy-option of the being on the most populous side.

So this swings me back to Order as my gut says this is where the good pvp'ers will find a home. I know my friends will want to play the 'good guys' but I really don't know which way to go yet. I guess I'll just try them all and see which one fits best.

The downside is even though I have CE on pre-order I wont be able to do the OB or the head start (going away and not back until 20th Sept - bad timing I know). So I'll have to mess around in the live game.

Wow, people. Did we forget we're playing a game here?  We aren't going to be having sex with any of our characters.  And do you all really approach every conversation with someone of the opposite sex so differently that gender makes a difference?  Are our prejudices and preconceptions really so deeply rooted that we project our fears and insecurities onto our avatars?   It's a bunch of pixels - well-endowed pixels, mind you, but pixels none-the-less.

What was the op ranting about again?  Oh yeah, good call.  Not a problem I mind running into.

actually I am looking to join or maybe create a male-only guild. Why? I am tired of been harrassed by female toons that are probably repressed guys in real life trying to hit on male pixels.

Please if you know of such a guild or looking to create one, let me know! Man power baby!

According to lore, Witch Elves are suppose to be the "brides of Kain".   Sort of like nuns in catholicism.

So, if you want to play a witch elf just think of yourself as a man who has had a sex change in order to please Kain so you would be a fitting bride.

I ended up trying all classes I was considering playing, but I'm still undecided between marauder, squid herder and maybe even shaman. I'm probably going for marauder thought for a frontline position on RvR.
