It is already apparent that WAR will kick AoC's royal but - which is a shame.. AoC graphics are better and combat mechanics defintely quicker and more twitchy.. but WAR RvR is unbeatable.. public quests are great.

AoC is simply not a big enough game to compete.

Too weird to live, and too rare to die

The future of AoC is the same as it was a year ago, when a lot of posters accurately predicted what would happen:

1.) AoC will have a huge launch as it will have no modern AAA competition, thus many bored gamers will buy it

2.) Funcom will work its magic and have a terrible launch due to a rushed and mismanaged production

3.) Players will revolt and cancel en masse

4.) WAR will launch and halve whatever AoC has left

We are currently approaching step 4, and the evidence is everywhere. Does everyone like WAR? Nope, not even close. Even discounting the trolls, a lot of players genuinely dislike it, but no one ever claimed it was the perfect fit for everyone. However, the overall response is positive, since the game actually works as advertised, and not a day goes by that I do not see a couple guilds ditch AoC in favour of WAR.

I had no doubt AoC would not be a smashing success - the writing was on the wall for a year, at least. The only part I was wrong on was how low AoC would go. I felt it would sustain 300,000+ subscribers, at least for a while, but now that appears to be wrong. I did not think niche status would occur so soon at all.

It is a shame, too. An MMORPG not living up to expectations ends up doing no one any good, except, perhaps, the competition's wallets and laziness.

Go to your local Gamestop or EBGames and pre order it.

Age of Conan will survive, but it will never be a huge success. Funcom had it in their pocket and pissed it away without any remorse what so ever.

To those that stick with AoC: I wish you the best of luck, and hope that you can find whatever it is you're looking for there.

Very true it has been MIA for a couple of months now.

If anyone is interested I found this online. www.uniteconomics.com/files/Funcom_Initiation.pdf

If you go to page 12 you will see that Funcom had projected having over 1 million subs by Q4 of 2009 with over 700k being from the Xbox 360. I am wondering if now they are actually in even a worse financial situation because I do not for the life of me see how they can convince stock holder they can retain those numbers now.

I think the future looks very dim for AOC myself.

If I am reading this right the CEO of Funcom has sold over 400,000 shares of Funcom stock. Please correct me if I am wrong.

No, when I feel like I have my 50 bucks of vengence out on Funcom I will stop. But thanks for the input with your total of 32 posts some of which defend this piece of crap game. At least I am doing the research that goes into the thread.

If it contains the words video and game, it must be a WOW clone.

Exactly , Which boggles my mind why some hope games they don't like DIE. Any death in the genre is a bad thing for the whole ,these incidents turn investors off . Without them there's no game .

I agree, although AoC was a dismal failier IMO, I don't want to see new companies, especially indie companies shy away from making MMO;s.

No, we want games made by unethical developers to die and the developing companies to die with them. It sets an example for other devs to think twice about jumping in for a quick buck at our expense, and also teaches those investors what to look for when investing in a game company. It will not turn investors away, it will make them smarter investors who will in turn be funding devs with good solid game ideas and strategies, Indy or not.

You as in you may not, I've seen plenty of people say they wish this game or that would just die or say they enjoy watching games fail like AOC. ,I've caught myself saying it numerous times about games like WOW I'm not the only one for sure.

This whole situation is bad no matter how you look at it . Developers are worthless without capitol. You can't get around that issue. Anytime a game fails like this it turns A) the smaller guy off from attempting (what many feel )impossible .B) The rich guy off from investing money into such a risky endeavor. This has been a trend in the genre for quite a few years , From Eq2 to AOC numerous games have released that barely achieved that bare minimum , Some weren't even that lucky.I wonder if A) the industry is in a rut or B) If we as players are just becoming to picky C) A little bit of both.

There's been maybe one well received release in the last few years LOTOR, Even that game can't be considered a success it only achieved the bare minimum.
