its so odd that every time a new MMO comes out its judged on its similarities to WoW or differences of... WHY? because theres so many people that WoW was their first and ONLY MMO ever played, it happened with my brother... and i tire of hearing "WAR is just a WoW clone because you raise levels and kill stuff..." lol. rock n roll, is rock n roll, theres distortion, vocals, drums and a bass player. sometimes some people write songs a little different or add a keyboardist (AoC copmbat), or a flute running through a leslie cab a tweeter that spins really fast in its enclosure, (pirates of the burning sea/ eve online?)... but its ROCK N ROLL!!! it will never change. if it did, it wouldnt be ROCK N ROLL!!! when i buy an MMO i want it to be an MMO!!! there will be fighting, leveling, gear, loot and maybe some story sprinkled in. world didnt invent MMOs. in fact its art style is VERY reminiscent of warhammer, but so many fanboys wont know that because warhammers been around WAY LONGER than warcraft. in fact, i think warhammer was the first fantasy setting to go the route of "hyper fantasy". and WoW definitely borrows heavily from that. and thats fine. i love the WoW setting, because i was a warcraft fan way before world came out (playing the RTS). and the theory i brought up to my friend just days ago was AoC was like EQ2 releasing first and had its own thing, but then WoW launched after like WAR will and really defined how an MMO should evolve. let me explain. remember playing DAoC? remember that downtime between fights? or playing FF11 and playing a lv 25 character not able to take out a lv 24 enemy without a group? those are the kind of things that made me LOVE WoW when it came out. it evolved the areas that were fundamentally broke in the older era of MMOs. and now i think WAR will release and fix the things we dont realise we hate about WoW. AoC will always be around as a fun MMO to play when your burned on everything else, but i have a feeling WAR is going to be the new king of the hill. mark my words, i'll go on record now as saying so. |

Alright then, add me to that list too, because I've enjoyed AoC the 3+ months I've been playing it.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed. |

I have not played WAR yet so what I know is from others reviews. I don't think that WAR will out pace WOW due to the fact of the focus of RvR. There will be too many people who will leave WAR due to their dislike of the RvR focus. Not that this is a bad thing, I personally am excited about the RvR., however enough of the people will want to stay with what they know and focus on pve. I too like many other players go back tot he begining of UO, EQ, AO and DAoC. I do not think that the state of the mmo is suceeding overall. Too many titles are comming out that are not very inovative or just not what they are advirtised (SWG, AoC). Too often mmo's are out for the hype and the initial buck or euro of the purchase then they replace the initial managment and developers with lesser quality, in order to save money and keep the profits up. I was one of those that bought into recent games like TR, hoping they were the next big thing only to be disapointed I will givethe recent titles of CXH and LOTR kudos for at least being ready at launch, eventhough I only play each of those on and off as of late. my suggestion is not to blindly buy into the propaganda or hype of any mmo as of late, until we get better products in the future. |

i just cant believe all the negative hype and the game hasent even launched yet. side note real quick, as you said about peopel being turned off by RvR. im just going on what ive heard (possibly naively) that the devs were quoted as saying you can pick whatever aspect of the game you like and follow it to lv 40. PvE, PvP, RvR etc... if thats not so, i would definitely be disappointed. because im into PvE and thats about it. with some fun grouping co-op sprinkled in. so that may turn me off. but i'll just have to wait and see. and im listening to the WAAAGH!!! podcast right now about the guys blogpost talking about an old comment someone said (forget his name sorry, who was a huge part of mudds etc) but he said something like "yeah i played WAR before it was called WoW"... thats so funny, because WAR has been around since the early 80s, and when was the first warcraft RTS? late 80s? so that means art style and fantasy style, warhammer IS its own. as for combat, looting and all the other features that makes MMOs MMOs, name 1 MMO that is so different from all the rest and tell me #1 that it STILL could be considered an MMO and #2 what is it doing that no one else is doing??? so many people seem to think they have the formula to create the perfect MMO to revolutionize the MMO movement and genre!?!?!? if it was so easy dont you think someone would have already revotionized it already? its a new art. like TV in the early 1900s. were only about 18 years in if you want to count MUDDs and on, and only about 10 years in with a healthy understanding of utilizing 3D textures. i mean whos to say that some day games might not even be 3d anymore. whos to say the isometric isnt the best path or a 2d/3d hybrid? i mean things are still really young, not to mention developers probably spend more time trying to get these massive games to work on a large cross section of PC rigs than crafting and developing the best world and rules system that would blow everyone away. theres just so many thing to look at. and i feel like, in our era of gaming, that blogging and internet information breeds people with a new self taught sense of righteous opinionated verbage to damn a game if they feel its getting to much hype or attention. how could anyone form any solid opinion of WAR and the game has not even launched yet? its crazy!!! i remember lotro in beta, and i didnt think i would still play it. ive come to love it more and more as time went on. good MMOs are an accuired taste and a work in progress, thats important to remember... |
