Hey, I played last night for the first time. I'll be playing all weekend, and I'll play in the open beta.

I'm not sure yet if I will spend $50 on this game and subscribe yet. I was really hyped up, especially after the NDA dropped and all these great reviews came in.

Here are a list of my initial disapointments:

1.  Quests- I don't like how the quests show you on the map exactly where to go.

2. Character Customization- I first wanted a bald DoK, but Dark Elves can't be bald? wtf. I then went for a Dwarf with a mokawk.. Where are the mohawks? Will these hairstyles be unlockable through the tome of knowledge or something? I tried a Witch Hunter and they also cannot be bald.

3. Character Graphics- Dwarves look kinda stupid. WarPriests look like warriors from Guild Wars. Zealots look like Necro's from GuildWars. There's all kinds of issues with the elves hair, they clip through the character and the long hair has anti-gravity components, apparently.

4. PQ's- After doing some PQ's I got a survey asking if I believe they build realm pride. No. They don't. PQ's make me compete to outdamage/outheal everyone else in the PQ. I don't feel pride, I feel annoyance that there are too many people in my PQ.

5. Spell Targetting- I was playing a warrior priest, and I have 1 ranged dmg spell. It didn't require me to face my target to cast it. I turned my back on a target and casted it and it threw my spell backwards. EQ style.

Also, I have dmg spells that benefit my target, which many times made me accidently cast a str buff onto a bright wizard I had previously healed, or onto an inanimate object or NPC I recently used for a quest. I basically have to reset myself to my defensive target with F1 Constantly.. This could probably be resolved with practice or macro's in the future.

I did like the control of the game, though. I was worried it would be sluggish control like DAoC, but it was good.

I also liked the Scenario I played.. Simply because it was over in 5 minutes. Win or Lose, it's over quick, so you don't have to listen to crying bitches for 20 minutes if your losing.

I haven't tried open RvR yet, but I plan to this weekend.

I'm going to play this game as much as I can this weekend and during open beta to give it a fair chance. But just from last night's experience, I'm not sure if it's worth a $50 box price + $15 a month.

If I decide not to play WAR, I will probably just go buy a First Person Shooter or play  classic UO on a freeshard. If I decide I love WAR, I will come back to these forums and praise it accordingly.

Cheers!

edited for a few grammar problems. There are probably more.

1. I'm not a big fan of this either but it seems to be the norm now (AOC had it too). You can go into your world map and turn it off if it really bothers you.

2. They are tied to the IP somewhat, they only give you looks that are appropriate for Warhammer. I guess I never understood why people make such a big deal out of things like this, I play in zoomed out 3rd person mode and armor covers up most of the choices anyway.

3. I think the basic character looks are great, especially the witch hunter. Guess it is just preference.

4. I really enjoy PQs, just keep in mind that the T1 zones are way overpacked at the start of the game. A week from now they won't be overcrowded anymore and as you get to higher tiers you'll have more coordinated groups doing the PQs instead of random mass zergs.

5. Most do require you to face targets, I believe it is just the basic range attack that doesn't.

6. This is by design, if they wanted it to be a self buff they would have made it that way. This way if you are say healing a tank in PvE you are buffing his str and healing him while doing damage.

IMO You're way too picky. Get out of the beta.

My quick opinion of beta: It's up to par with every other MMO. But then top it off with 2 extra scoops and a cherry on top. If you like PvP this is the game for you. If you dont like PvP and love roleplaying and PvE this game is great, with only a few added improvements to the genre. Only a few added improvements but also nothing lacking.

i have noticed lots of people hating map tracked quests. i personally love it, let me explain.

when i play LotRO, i spend SO MUCH time trying to find where im supposed to go, or what area i want to go to to do quests in that it kind of detracts from the game for me. when i play AoC i open my map and click on the nearest gray "X". i love that. it totally fixes twiddling through my quest book trying to find areas/qeusts that sync up for me to align for efficiancy. i think all games should have it and if you dont like it and option to turn it off.

Did you do any beta TESTING?

Did you find any game breaking bugs, unfinished quests, stuff like that?

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Read the quest, head the direction it hints at.  All these marks on the map take away any sence of adventure or exploration.  You don't even need to read the quests anymore, just click accept, head towards the X on the map and kill something then return for XP.

either they can keep the way quest sytem showing where to go on map the way it is or go back to the old system where everyone and their mom will just contiously spam "where can i find the wolves for <quest name>". i like this sytem better since its one less question new players will ask.

Hence why you have to sign a beta test agreement each time you login?

NB: They changed the agreement from NDA to BTA

Heaven forbid people ask questions in an MMO or learn something about the world they play in.

Personally I think it cheapens the experience of questing and just turns it into running between dots to gain experience.

Beta is over now basically and the hyping is starting to get alittle too much IMHO.

I would really start to be honest and open about things and discuss the issues of the game.

Try to remember they do not have forums for people to go to on their site and that you will be facing alot more in the coming weeks here than usual because of this.

His review is honest and shows what he thinks about the game.

Also as stated Preview Weekend  this is the start of the ramp up to release.

Open beta isn't over, it technically just started.

There are plenty of fixes and bugs you can point out, but I would say 90%+ of them are easy fixes or happen because they are keeping the servers running on minimal performance. Hence why the graphics are not very good (you can't up the settings for graphics either).

I play a White Lion, and I love it. The only thing that is pissing me off every time I log on is 1) War Lion doesn't listen and pathing is messed up 2) mob pathing sucks in generally. I have not come across any severe bugs besides crash to desktop when I am trying to do too many things at once.

I would have to agree with the OP and say I don't like the way PQ are in this game. Public Quests are an AMAZING idea, revolutionary. I couldn't believe it the first time I did one, its awesome. But in WAR it seems the best gear is from PVP and PQ (from the rarest bags). The feeling I get when I get screwed over to someone who barely contributed and they get a golden bag makes me ill. It also sucks that you basically have to compete with everyone just to get the highest contribution.

Game is great, well done, polished to almost complete, PVP is good but endless.

Beta is not over until Head Start begins. They can make a patch the day before they open the servers to fix things. Just because Marketing is gearing up for release doesn't mean that the programming, art, UI, etc teams are on vacation. They are working 24/7 to get things fixed and polished for release and expect that to happen until the day it officially releases.

I'm not sure yet if I will spend $50 on this game and subscribe yet. I was really hyped up, especially after the NDA dropped and all these great reviews came in.

Here are a list of my initial disapointments:

1.  Quests- I don't like how the quests show you on the map exactly where to go.  Its not exact..it just gives you the general idea..which is what an RPG game player should expect.  They tell you the Area they mark the area but they don't give you X marks the spot so whats the problem here?  Its actually rather immersive.

Elves including the Dark ones are Posh...Posh people aren't bald.   Dwarves with Mohawks are slayers thats specific in the lore from my memory.  You won't ever get a mohawk unless they add it in through a barbershop.  I agree if someone wants to be a shiny headed witch hunter they should be.

3. Character Graphics- Dwarves look kinda stupid. WarPriests look like warriors from Guild Wars. Zealots look like Necro's from GuildWars. There's all kinds of issues with the elves hair, they clip through the character and the long hair has anti-gravity components, apparently.   Dwarves always look stupid..they're stunty little aggressive mining beasts..so ..what do you expect for them to suddenly look like Mini Me?   Warrior Priests look like they should are you not familiar with the lore?  Its 25 years old..they're rather specific in their ceremonial garb.    You must not be familiar with MMOs...if you want hare & clipping to be that extensive MMOs aren't for you..thats honestly nitpicking.

4. PQ's- After doing some PQ's I got a survey asking if I believe they build realm pride. No. They don't. PQ's make me compete to outdamage/outheal everyone else in the PQ. I don't feel pride, I feel annoyance that there are too many people in my PQ.  You obviously don't understand PUBLIC QUEST its meant as something everyone participates in..being the top 3 never gets you anything just a bonus towards your roll.  You could have 100 points contributed and still win over someone with a 400 point bonus.   If you dont like the fact your all working to win then .. well you obviously don't understand the concept.  Granted they could give out more bags when there's alot of people.  OH and you can not solo them they are NOT your PQ's they are for the realm.  Maybe you should just skip these since you obviously just want to do stuff for yourself and seem to think Damage matters.

5. Spell Targetting- I was playing a warrior priest, and I have 1 ranged dmg spell. It didn't require me to face my target to cast it. I turned my back on a target and casted it and it threw my spell backwards. EQ style.   Odd usually they make you face the target this must be a new bug or a Lag bug the servers are experience alot of new bugs due to the server stability testing..i admit as a beta tester it makes the game suck a tad.

Also, I have dmg spells that benefit my target, which many times made me accidently cast a str buff onto a bright wizard I had previously healed, or onto an inanimate object or NPC I recently used for a quest. I basically have to reset myself to my defensive target with F1 Constantly.. This could probably be resolved with practice or macro's in the future.  well atleast your not complaining are yoU? Targetting issues with a double target system is your own problem.

Maybe if everyone worked together like they're supposed to in the Scenarios instead of running around killing people like dumbasses people wouldn't complain.  I admit since new people came into the game its sucked everyone just takes the first point and runs to the next leaving it un protected and open for Destruction to come in and take it.

I haven't tried open RvR yet, but I plan to this weekend.    Don't play Open RvR just to be the top..play it to win and winning means working together

I'm going to play this game as much as I can this weekend and during open beta to give it a fair chance. But just from last night's experience, I'm not sure if it's worth a $50 box price + $15 a month.

About how characters look, there is an IP here.  Many people may not know this so I just tell it here... I do hope people would reasearch a little on the warhammer universe but oh well.

The graphics designs were approved by Games Worshop.  So, no... no blad elves and the dorfs look as warhammer dorfs.

If you dont like them, maybe you dont like the warhammer universe.

They already had to convince GW to have male sorceres.

So the characters were approved by the owner of the IP.  But maybe some people know better than GW about how their IP is.

EDIT: OP, I not sure if you know but there are back styles so if you give the back to an enemy they will use it... not sure if its the best to do that while casting in this game.

IMHO  i really don't think WAR is about exploration during quests..it is about exploring because A you want to B you love the lore and want to see the world you love or C becuase you get EXP for it and find those little side quests that are hidden through the game and that start you on long chains of quests and get gear that the normal player would never be able to get....

i really like their quest system... it brings people into RvR and those that really don't want to don't have too

and you can always turn the hints off...although sometimes i ran into problems that the NPCs did not give enough info.....

also i think the PQs and RvR give better exp

I am liking the questing system with the red on the map. It keeps everything moving fast paced like the tabletop game is.

I went from lvl 1-11 so far this weekend in RVR only with a few quests when i died hahaha.  I've been waitin for agame like this for a loooong time..woohoo.  It's nicer to grind xp on other players then computer mobs.

War makes wow look like pong.
