I played WoW and some of the mentioned games. They are all good games in different ways.
I maybe dont understand, that but so far its you always pulling the EQ2 card?
I dont see anything bad with that. I think Blizzard recycles Naxramas in the next expansion, Funcom used the AO combatsystem for AoC and so on... So.. yeah. *shrug*
Why suddenly the hate? VG might not get the traditional expansionpack (+10 levels, +new zones, +new raids, +...) but there will be new content. It might take more time like in games with more developer power though.
Well, it took me 6 weeks to level a char to 50 and people say that Im not the slowest one. I still have 49 quests in my book at least 40 are for level 50 chars, so Im pretty sure I wont run out of content the next months. VG HAS tons of content, I disagree completely. Not many games offer the feature to disable xp gain so you wont outlevel content. Most games raise with every expansionpack the levelcap and soon they introduce mechanics which allow the players to level up faster in the early levels. So they encourage to burn through the content and in the same process make it void. This is pretty stupid. But this shouldnt be discussed in this thread.
Actually thats a compliment. If a mmorpg gives a player the illusion of a wide, open world, it did something right. |

Yeah vanguard could certainly have more dev time for sure. I'd love to see more content and more stuff added and I'd love to see an expansion. It would be great if SoE ramped up the effort on vanguard. But it is what it is. Vanguard is still a great game and it still has a ton of content far more then most of the games on the market that have been released recently. It also has great replayability with diverse classes that actually are unique and interesting and beyond that the world is so diverse that it actually takes playing it through a couple times to get all the content. Now today it has one raid and partheon revamp will be in soon not to mention the new Island zone. So they are in fact adding stuff to it and it isn't totally stagnant. They have spent a lot of time fixing things and that is the Right priority. All the content in the world won't matter if the game won't run on my computer. Today it isn't the same game it was at release by any measure. Revamping the character models and redoing the models to support helms and improve performance is a nice trick and making the models look better in the process is no small job. I think you understate what they have accomplished and I'm interested to see what they accomplish in the coming months as they shift more from a fixit mode to a content development mode. Other things you fail to see are the internal development things they are doing. One of the common themes with VG at launch was that the development tools were virtually non existant and this was also a priority. I'm sure this situation has improved substantially in the past months. So while you can focus in on all the things that are important to you, or that soe isn't investing as much as you like or that there are not hundreds of developers or that you don't like the new character models or countless other things. One thing that is clear, you have no interest in Vanguard. So umbral and friends enjoy ranting and I will enjoy playing :) I'll continue to feel optimistic about the things they are doing and the hard work the dev team is putting in. In any event I hope you are having as much fun trolling as I am playing the game. |

Just wanna say a few things in response to some criticizms posted earlier. Since vanguard has a small population of course they are not gonna pour resources into it. Trial Island is a chance for the game to increase its pop/income to bring players in and of course with a higher pop/ revenue base the game will get more $ spent on it to make it better and better. I have played many of the popular mmorpgs out there- WoW, EvE, LotRO, AoC, AO, EQ2 and I truely believe that this game is as good or better then any of those. Vanguard has a couple good things going for it. First (and most important for the player) is that its a great product. Second and of equal importance is that sony is putting money into marketing it with its free trial which has the possibility of keeping it a viable product. Without both of these factors ie marketing and quality, any product is doomed to fail. Up until now sony was ironing out its quality and imho since achieving a standard worthy of marketing (fast forward a year and a half since release) that phase of their business plan is progressing. Again as I touched upon earlier in this thread - if you have a computer that can run AoC well and you decide to play Vanguard, prepare to enter one of the if not the most immersible worlds you have every seen. I know I have never seen anything even close to it!

Some people doesnt care about these details, some others like me see these as some of the reasons why pay for a MMO. My reasons are my own, but you should realize now that I care about Vanguard and how it is lacking now, this is not a troll attitude.

Everyone can't play Vanguard, so yes, some people do prefer a playable game instead of pretty eye-candy. I understand there are people out there that can afford to upgrade their computers for every game they wish to play, or even spend the cash for a new system. From the research that I've done, almost every consumer PC comes with a PSU that is not underrated for any card that can play this game. Furthermore, many affordable consumer PCs are so small that you can hardly fit a high-end graphics card in them. I cannot fit a good graphics card in my AGP slot because there is largish capacitor on the MB that sits next to the slot. The heatsink on the cars are big and sit on top of the capacitor, making it impossible to insert the cards in and "snap" them in place. The PSU doesn't have a PCI-E power connector and most of those AGP cards are PCI-E cards with a bridge chip on them to make them work with the AGP systems. I have been looking around for a new computer for weeks now and I have gone as far as making the people in the computer stores allow me to look inside the computers to examing the Slots/MB/PSU and almost all of thsoe computer PCs are utter crap. The best way to get a system to play these games at acceptable settings is either to buy a very expensive consumer PC (1k-1.5k) or customize the system from a company that sells gaming machines online (they allow you to customize in very deep detail, down to PSU ratings, etc.). I have 3 HP Pavilions here and after realizing the PSU issue I looked in my computers and realized that all of the PSUs were 50-100 Watts below the "Required/Recommended" rating of the Dedicated Graphics Cards that I customized in them ON HP's Website. Systems that I ordered with ATI/GeForce Cards that require 350/400 Watt PSUs came with 250/300 Watt PSUs. I was always wondering why my computers were so friggin loud while playing games... The temperature inside those computers when playing games can rise to dangerous levels, and there is little room to add extra fans in them. Buying a system from a PC Manufacturer like Dell/HP/Acer/Gateway is out of the question for anyone who seriously games for a large portion of the time that they are using their PC, because it will simply break sooner or later (I had to send a Graphics Card Back because of that, and my Sony Vaio Laptop's inverter blew and had to be replaced because I used it to play EverQuest alot due). The systems get hot and consumer PC cases are not designed for this type of use. They are designed for the type of people who use a computer for a couple of hours and turn it off during the night. They are not for serious users who play video games with dedicated/high-power graphics cards and leave the system running for many hours-days-weeks at a time. I am tired wasting money on such machines, only to end up in the same state of "Oops, can't really upgrade this PoS... Without paying 3x the Price to HP/Sony/whoever..." over and over again. To be able to play these unnecessarily graphically complex MMOs I'd have to buy another computer and having to pay 1.5k for a new machine is out of the question. That is my vacation I'm planning next month, and then some. Luckily, other companies (Mythic, Blizzard) have a clue on developing games that look somewhat pretty without locking out such a large portion of potential player base with system requirements (which the Vanguard developers need to reconsider, cause they are listed too low on the box ATM - WTB a MainFrame to play VG...). |
