The folks at The Chronicles of Spellborn have announced Acclaim Games as the North American publisher for TCoS.

Berlin, 2008/08/19: Frogster and the Dutch developer Spellborn are pleased to announce Acclaim Games as US publisher for The Chronicles of Spellborn. The renowned and tradition-steeped American company lead by industry veterans Howard Marks and David Perry has licensed the fantasy MMORPG as their focus title. Acclaim already has almost seven million registered users within their portfolio of currently five online games and is committed to start a large-scale marketing campaign until its launch in late 2008. Acclaim will give North American players a free-to-play zone while subscribers will be able to explore the entire virtual world.

I have to admit, I wasn't expecting their subscription model. The way it was being promoted up until a few months ago made it seem like it was going to content with the "buy game, get first month free, pay $15 after" games.

I take it then that this won't be a game we purchase, but download? Or will it be a mix model, like you pay $50 for the game, but get $50 worth of subscription time?

It will work the way you originally thought, you will buy the game and pay a subscription to play it,what you get is a free to play zone, basically like a trial, maybe levels 1-6 or something along though's lines but to play outside this zone and have access to other thing's you will have to pay a sub.

I m more inclined to buy it now , I like Acclaim they did a good job with 9Dragons , just 9 Dragons developers arent very good. With the rush of trash games , Spellborn must have something good to setup a free zone to test drive it.

I cant wait for it to be released.

good bye TCoS.

Acclaim totally ruined 9Dragons and overhyped the changes they would make to 2Moons ,then did none,zero,nitch,cero...nothing.

ermm I think you are missing something here,Acclaim are the NA publisher's they have nothing to do with the devolpment side of the game.

This is fantastic news!

Its getting closer, i was starting to worry TCoS would fade away.

Anyone who isn't familiar with The Chronicles of Spellborn should search it on youtube. There are quite a few leaked videos of the game play.

It is a true Action MMORPG, so it probably won't appeal to everyone, specially the people who don't like reactive combat. But to those looking for an MMO in this style, this game is a dream!

Acclaim and David Perry are PUBLISHERS. They publish the game, the developers develop them. Its clear the 2moons developers didnt do a good job, whereas the developers of TCoS look pretty committed and in touch with the community.

2Moons was however published well, servers are solid and always up, community managers do a good job, fast downloads etc. So, as long Acclaim bring that Publishing skill to TCoS, and the developers dont change, and stay focused on what looks like a pretty cool game, then I'll be happy :)

Plus, having a free zone shows huge confidence in the final game! Imagine if AOC had done that!!

I think this is good news for the game, its a better option than going it alone in this case. Maybe Acclaim will do Darkfall too?

This is probably a win-win for both Acclaim and Spellborn. Without a publisher the game wasn't going to be widely distributed. (Who else with pockets full of money did you THINK was going to help them?) Few of the development houses have funds to both create a game and market it too.

Acclaim to date has a stable of crappy on-line product to push. Spellborn so far at least looks as if some thought went into it rather than throwing some cut rate anime at bargain basement programmers and calling it a MMORPG. If Spellborn turns out to be a quality game it puts Acclaim in business as a serious player.

Or it puts Spellborn out of the runninng, because they went through someone that the MMO Community know as a crap-pusher (or pusher of crap).

I'm pretty disappointed about it all. And of course, showing that disappointment on the Official Forum gets angry nerds mad at you.  Le Sigh.

If I change my mind on buying TCoS now, it'll be at least a year after it comes out.

I understand the concern, but it comes right back to my question of who else was going to do it? It had to be someone that needed what the Spellborn developers were selling with the money to foot the bills and the desire to do so.  I think we could safely rule out Blizz, Sony, Turbine, Funcom, EA/Mythic and their associated entities,  so who would you have liked to see them partner with?

You're right, in that, there really were not many options for TCoS. In an ideal world I would have liked a company with little or no reputation to get in the way of the game itself.

But my only real concern with Acclaim publishing the game is that all their  current MMO's are item mall funded. I dispise item mall games. Especially with Spellborn, where their motto is "What Lies Hidden, Must be Found" an item mall would just ruin the game, in my mind.

I would really hate TCoS to go item mall.

Games I'm waiting for:
- APB
- Heroes of Telara
- DC Universe Online
- Star Wars: The Old Republic
- Guild Wars 2
- The secret World

The only other game I've seen have this much trouble landing a publisher is Darkfall.

That's not a good sign.
