Give it up. Sure you got an idea, the know-how and alot more. Seriously though everyone will say your game is crap and annoys them. All new ideas are shot down by people. The boring addicting games like WoW(i've played the trial for a reason) are the money makers. A big name takes a big franchise and says "Heres a world you all love enjoy it with other people and engage in hours of exploration and *Notes* I used short because a quest is ones eternal mission of good or evil or just in between. A mission should refer to a quest. A true quest would be "Purge the world of [insertultraevilmonster] so the lands of so and so will be free from his rule". The nature of mmos won't allow such a quest. To end the games never ending plot wouldn't work. |

I'd love to know your dream, perhaps there is someway I can make a post to ruin it for you. Don't give up on making games, mmos, or any dream you have.

lol seriously. Did you go to a gaming convention, with the stars in your eyes, and a spring in your step? did you walk right up to a major dev's corner with a suitcase full of dreams? Did you spill your heart out to them, telling them about an amazing idea you had for an MMO? After that, did those devs take a LolBat to your knees, then urinated burning oil into your eyesockets, handed you a razor and some mascara, and said get out?
Hell. My dream is to get into game design. I got ideas for games I havent seen done. Now, I'm just going to ignore the original poster and say this. Just what Midnitte said, believe in your dreams, work for them, embrace them. Dreamers are what this world needs right now. They are the ones with the creativity, the ones who have the skill to break the monotony that WoW has caused games to adopt (dont get me wrong, WoW is a good game, but it isnt special enough to be copied).
(dont let yourselfs be that poor guy who got hot oil in his eyes! Wow those devs! :O ) |

Well I don't think you thought the post through that much, and you fail at quoting (:P). I think people just need to focus on one job while dapping into other fields of work. Creating an MMO by yourself isn't possible, but having an idea for one and working on it to make it great is.

The gaming industry is very fickle and its a shame that we, the gamers, are our own worst enemy.
We want new groundbreaking games, but do we buy them? No. Well maybe, but if we do, do we continue to support them? Of course not.
But, on the bright side, I have been WoW free for 6 months now |

Yeah my bad on the quoting. Now to the guy who said something about hot oil and my eyesockets(lol i forgot ure name) kinda thats how i felt when i saw all those mmos claiming to be "unique". They only had different features. People aren't capable of making a mass amount of people (suitible for an mmorpg community) happy all the time. I came to realize this. They say get more GMs well hacking preventions are too strict and GMs are to lazy for what people are expecting. I see my flaws but i don't think a Einstein of mmos will create the atomic bomb of a game we all want to play. |

Again this is why Funcom fails, and why SWG fails. Companies tend to completely ignore the community, or completely follow it. Blizzard is so successful with WoW because they listen to their players, not follow or ignore them. If you get into game development I'd suggest following that guideline.

Aww... I'm sad you forgot my name... :( Thing is with MMOs, is they fit with comedians. You arent going to get everyone laughing, and trying to make them all laugh will leave you with no one laughing. Just do what you want, make the game you want, and I'm more than certain you'll find an audience. Final fantasy 11 has 18hr boss fights, people love them and the constant level grinding. Good for them, not my taste, great example for above. WoW was more or les the key to a door locked from the inside. It let millions into the MMO market. Other people saw this, and thought money maker (Star wars galaxy good example), and ended up alienating their own fanbase trying to copy them. I'm not going to blame WoW, but I can play other companies for thinking a clone will be better than something new. Personally, I play WoW, but I cant love it, great game, I'll get the expansion, but I'm looking to try War, and Aion, and a few other games. |

Another quoting issue. When did you notice the new post anyways 0-0. I'm not about to get indetail about what you said because i've only played the trial of WoW. If that was towards my comment(im not saying it is) but if it was i mean that no amount of players like the same thing. Not the community. Jax 4k hours on WoW is a freaking lot you might want the WoW patch. Don't know were you can get one but you better find one.

It was in response to players being the industries own worst enemy. Its more meaning that once you become a slave to the community or completely ignore it; your game is doomed.

Here are the facts friends - not everyone will accomplish their dreams. Most who do, have everything in life handed to them. Very few who do, actually work their asses off and come from the most poorly inhereited backgrounds possible. Most people who try to accomplish their dreams don't get anywhere close. The ones who are left, get stuck and plateau halfway there, of which half land somewhere reasonably well off, and the other half barely make ends meet. So, where does this leave the aspiring game designer? Well, let's take a look-see. You have a dream to be a game designer.
These are important questions I think. They may seem simple, but they're important to what makes the driven person tick. Anyone can accomplish anything if they make the right decisions, and the right decision isn't always standing right out in front of you. Be smart. Be loyal to your gaols and dreams. Do anything you can think of that makes your name as a game designer sound as legitimate as Peanut Butter and Jelly. Write your design down, completely. Hell, you could probably easily convert it to a Table-Top RPG and figure out a way to get it published. You'll never make it into game design telling everyone "I have the best ideas ever!" And remember this above all else. One thing a game designer hates more than anything, is someone who thought of something better. |

Of course not, I'd suggest reading The Alchemist. Going through life trying to achieve a dream which may not come true will allow you to learn skills you can use in life to be successful; Perhaps you won't become a video game 3d artist, but can use the skills you learned to land a job making 3d graphics for tv shows or advertisements.

The reason i almost quit my dream is because i got some hot oil in my eyes.(yes it is such a beautiful line i will use it over and over if people dont understand potential). I'm gunna buy c++ for dummies. Hopfully that starts me off somewere. |

And to quote Randy Pausch: "Roadblocks are there to keep everyone else out". It depends on if you want to achieve it enough and how hard your willing to work.

WAIT WHAT!? Since when did this post become about dreams? I might be missing an lolkitty or two but Isn't this thread about regaining dreams. Instead of human dreams potential and all that inspiring crap.(dunno who got inspired besides me anyways 0-0) *note for understanding* Human potential is the ideal term for hard work because that is how even the laziest person can change into a hard working person. To understand his potential and he can do more then eat 5 bigmacs a day, and still taste hot dog in his burps. |

It'll last. I don't play any subscription games at the moment and don't plan to play any MMO's in the future, until the industry does change. And for these past few months I've contented myself with all my old first person shooters. And Oblivion, of course. Although I am waiting for Spore and Fallout 3. |

Heh, Oblivion can be a great time waster... until you realized you are level 14 and all you've done to escalate the story was escape the sewers, yet your already master of the fighters guild and deep within the dark embrace of the infamous dark brotherhood (the assassins) Fallout 3 is a game I cant wait for, real excited for it, I know Im going to play lich king, but how far I'll go, who knows, currently burned out after trying to get my epic flying mount. On topic though, Oblivion and Fallout 3 definately seme to break the mold. Also, look into a series called Disgaea, one of the best tactical RPGs out there, besides Final Fantasy Tactics. Third one comes out next week, and the other two are nothing to scoff at (one secret boss is lvl 6000 !!!!! and is a penguin... o.o) |

What do you mean I'm a bussines programmer. nothing could possibly look better on my resume than making a small server cluster designed for heavish use like you'd see in an MMO.
Game programming and developement can screw itself. You're forced to do more intensive work and less secure work for less pay. Granted if that game I'm occasionally/lazilly working on were to take off I'd gladly would do so as well nothing like running your own sucessful bussiness. |
