TWILIGHT ONION!

8/15/08 2:48:11 AM#1

Im not a big fan of Free 2 play games, That being said I wanna give them the benefit of the doubt...some more... So far all the Free 2 play games I have tried are the same game, Kill X number of mobs or gather Y number of Z item from X mob and return it to NPC. No escort quests, no special event quests (Only cabal online Had Dungeon quests) So I'm still trying to see whats the big deal with Free 2 play mmorpgs and why they are such a big part of the mmo market, That being said

Do you guys know of an mmorpg that has

Good graphics (better than Cabal if possible)

Free 2 play (Not just Free 2 play Free 2 finish Free 2 thrive and Free 2 Enjoy (like Cabal's payment style)

A big world to explore!

Lots of different types of quests

A grind / level cap that is actually obtainable by a human for a change! (Im looking at you SoTNW with your 0000.1% exp per mob after Veteran stance ~.~)

If there is such a game plz let me know about it so I can see why people play Free 2 play games! If there is not such a game, Then at least tell me about a Free 2 play game that is unique in its leveling.

So far the best iv found is Cabal online, Level cap is insane 170 levels, BUT you do get Rested EXP the time you are offline, Also The weapon skills and Time combat system is quite unique you gotta time out your weapon skills to chain them into a big attack, I like that, But the fact that Cabal online's world is limited to 10 areas which are really small to boot, does not help it much.

Do you play Free 2 play mmorpg and Actually enjoy the game play aspect of it?

Yes I play free mmorpg games and I love the Game play/leveling style of them
Yes I play Free 2 play mmorpgs But I don't like to grind that much...
Yes I play Free 2 play mmorpgs but only to wait for a real mmo to come out.
No I don't play Free 2 play mmorpg
You could not pay me to try a Free 2 play mmorpg grind fest
I try them out but Usually quit them within a few days because they are dull

Try out Perfect world i hear its full of quests.

personally the only F2p game I play is mabinogi due to it being a sandbox.

I wouldn't even consider it a F2p game since I'ts so good you will want to actually pay for the game.

Why would I play a pathetic themepark MMO when I could enjoy a masterpiece like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age?

Sadly Perfect World only had 2 things for it.  Great facial customization that is somewhere along the lines of Age of Conan's, and lots of quest.  After that is was kinda crappy.

When I reached level 30 and was only using 5 spells stil out of a total arsonel of 8, I was done.

Then I really quit the game when I saw their piss poor excuse of an instanced dungeon.

The only good free to play MMO game was Rappelz, however you won't find unique quest there, but the rest of the game seems polished.   the dugeons are somewhat lackluster too.

Well, it's like regular television vs pay channels.  Usually the pay channels have better original shows, but more people watch the ones on the free over the air channels.

Anyway, the longest one I played was Sword of the New World, until I hit vet and hit the massive grind. Next to that would be Rohan, which I think I played for 1 1/2 weeks.  It's got okay graphics, about as good as Cabal I'd say.

There's the upcoming Atlantica, which is in closed beta, which is different because it's turn based, and apparently added a system where you can't grind. (You can only fight 50 battles a day or something)

Some people like Perfect World, I thought it was okay, but too laggy for me. There's a NA version coming. People say the grind gets bad at high levels.

Honestly, though, I think the grind gets bad in all free game at high levels. They make it non-grindy in lower levels to get people hooked, but then in the high levels, they don't want to spend resources making quests and such, so they just get grindy.

Many pay ones are like that, but most fill in the high levels over time (and in expansion packs). A lot of free ones haven't been around that long, even considering they launched in their home regions a year or two before the English release).

If you're tired of the typical .0001% per kill grind in MMORPGs I suggest just moving on to FPS'.  No battle will be the same and there are always new challenges and opponents to test your skill on a even playing field.

Combat Arms is a good F2P one and CoD 4 is another one but B2P.

Or BF2.  Ahh.... the great great battles I had in that game when I used to play it.  CoD 4 is awesome too, just.. no manned vehicles to blow up :P

But, for the MMO F2P stuff... Cabal is by far the best one I've tried.  But I only play P2P games now, gave up on F2P.  Well, sort of ... I am in the Atlantica CB.  I like the gameplay enough, and the turn-based combat system is cool.  But I fear the item mall will be a pretty important part of the game upon release.

After played the horrible F2P 9Dragons I was playing Cabal Online, it gave me fresh new world, but then I found out Cabal Online was really boring and super heavy weight grinding game. You need to know how to explit the game to level up fast. My character only around lv30 and I already dual master, I could hit dual Trans at lv40. But if I login, I just level up the skill for hours, it bored me well like a BOT.

So I quit and looking for other F2P. My experience about F2P is that the next F2P seems to be always better or fun to play than previous one. I think Talisman Online is more fun to play than Cabal Online atm. That is the only F2P I am going to hit higher level by so far.

Cabal Online seems to have better graphics but compare with any P2P I have played before, it just like a old graphics technology VGA 640x480. So I don't really care to find a good graphics F2P as long as they don't go down to 320x240 quality.

The new F2P 4story also from Korea seems to be a little better than Cabal Online. The game still in 2nd beta test. Anyway, I never expect there would be a WOW so fantastic F2P to release on the market. Because it will never have one. Why? poor graphics and so-so quality is the platform for all F2P to allow it to be free.

If their income from item shop increased then they don't seem to release the new one, vice versa, if you see a company contnuously release new F2P, you can be sured they have much less income from item shop. Game like Guild War for sure they will be productive because their major income is selling boxes.

Game stays for long time, they are profitable from item shop. That said, if you are going to play a well known game on the market for a period of time, it means you are likely to purchase something from their item shop. Your approval to the game are their growing support, but then whenever you bought something from a F2P, the game isn't a F2P anymore.

Perfect World is starting international server in a few days. Personally I think it is the best of the F2P games. I never got too terribly far on the Myan servers. Many ppl tho say it can be completed fully without costing a penny. As most stuffs from the item mall are often sold by the players...just costs more in-game money.

I play EVE for free... does that count?

How to do this:
Pay for a couple months till you can do level 4 missions (or have some other method of making around 300 mil isk/month) and then buy 60 day Game Time Codes with ISK (in game money).

Currently I make 1.5-2billion isk/month on my character... 350 or so of it goes to pay for every 2 months of my play. While not truely 'free' to play (after all, someone buys that GTC for real $$$) it's free to me :)

Another option is to find F2P versions of P2P games......I wont mention any names but several popular games have free private servers also...They are usually variations of the p2p game but most are still fun......They usually have item shops or server donations but you can still play them for free if you like.
