skill-based games already do this so I'm kind of lost. In eVE, it would take what someone help me, 20 years to unlock all the skills? Go play EVE to see how well or bad it works Also in Saga of Ryzom I highly doubt someone unlocked all the skills? I'm just guessing but 250 in every skill is hardcore kinda aint it?
skill-based games really, really already do this. I'm not sure if I can speak on this topic. It depends
Do you mean vertical leveling? Whereas levels grant ultimate power? NO!!!! Just my humble opinion. Is it like BF2142 where Levels merely unlock a new skill? Maybe I will play. Is it like a skill-based game designed so that all paths are viable?
I still think its a good idea. Well, its genius good and horrible bad at sametime. I would have to play it.
Off hand only bad I forsee (come on Force powers) is that it will make it tough to make alts. I kinda like the idea of skill caps. Allow me to dynamically make unique, player created Class. Heck, I am not adverse to just letting people unlock everything either. But hard defined Traditional Levels I dont care for. |

did u guys read the post actually? I said that after the causal xp lvl cap there could be infinite lvling with a death penalty so those who are higher lvls they are actually good and skilled players... as for a lvl 92 beating a lvl 107 was just an example.. in wow many times i managed to kill a guy that was 6-9 lvls above me...that doesnt mean wow is unbalanced..it just means that if u possess the skill you r not dead by default just cause the othe is hiugher lvl than u |

Even if you know that that char was most likely bought via ebay from a power leveling service. I can assure you that in such a system even players that play 8 hours a day will be on the losing end. Im someone who is waiting for darkfall so i doub i ever whine about a 20+ lvl kill me in pvp, thats something carebears do. And are you jealous of someone who can play more then you, its seems a whine to me :P If a game is good protected and devs make hard mussures agains bots or third party programs it should be ok then. I would not play a game where you can buy on ebay thats why im only intrested in darkfall, and game you so affraid of this will happen are themepark games, i dont play themepark games. |

By the way Darkfall does not have levels, but pretend it has infinite levels with no power plateau, and since in Darkfall you can be killed almost anywhere, how many people do you think will play?, is it fun to fight against no-life level 1000s with no chance of ever catching up to them? the answer is no. |

First I'll say that I would like to see a new type of mmorpg that doesn't depend entirely on character progression to hook people. Failing that I'd like to see more skill based games. However, when it comes to level based games I think infinite leveling makes a lot of sense. In fact it might be the only thing that makes sense. Would it screw up PvP balance? Sure but level based games have always had problems making PvP work. They could put in level range limits for who you can attack and so on. Would it be an endless grind? Well...yeah...but aren't all progression games an endless grind? Why would endless leveling be any worse than endless gear upgrading? Would it favor people with more time? Yes but all progression games do that already. The thing I don't understand about some replies on this thread is this: If a person doesn't want infinite leveling then why does he/she want leveling at all? I'm asking that question in all seriousness. If you want leveling to be capped and at the level cap the "real" game begins then I am genuinely curious why you want to waste your time leveling at all. Why not start the "real" game right away? Let me rephrase that. If the game begins at the endgame then why does anyone want to waste time with the pre-endgame leveling? If the "real" game is raiding then why not do away with the waste of time leveling up phase people have to go through to reach the raiding game. Why not just make a game in which, right from the start, everyone is joining guilds and raiding bosses for gear progression. Just get rid of levels entirely and start the "real" game immediately. Similarly if the "real" game is endgame PvP then why make people waste their time with levels before they can join in on the PvP endgame. Start the endgame at the beginning and save us all a lot of trouble. And I think this helps to illustrate one of the problems with these games that is the reason for a lot of the hostility we see between mmorpg gamers. These games tend to start out as one thing and then change into something else. Why? Why the hell do devs do that? Why don't they decide what the game is going to be, start it that way, and then keep it that way. |

Take a look at the OP from this thread Indeed, MMORPGs are one of a few with leveling: Why? Infinite levels would just appeal to those who play 24/7 or use bots. Not very satisfying to anyone else. "LOOK I HAVE A LVL9999 ROGUE"

How about we just ditch levels instead? |

Which is what I was suggesting, perhaps use a system where you level individual skills by using or training them. (Which is why I loved PreCU SWG, you could train so many skills) I'm just glad most mainstream MMOs don't go over level 100.

Interesting topic indeed. But I voted 'No' because personally I don't play for the sake of reaching the max level. So I think it goes back to personal preferences, maybe like when u reach level 100, you have 2 choices ; to gain more level or uhmm..no idea.. |

That's not true at all. It's not that difficult to create a macro/bot for any MMORPG in the market right now. You could also set up a 1-button macro against certain types of opponents (monsters/bosses/human opponents). www.oblinq.com/SnowmonkeysTemple/ |
