Due to WOW's addictive nature, some people's lives were ruined by the game be it relationship wise, or health wise...The question is how addictive will WAR be in comparison? Your thoughts?

War, WoW, Lotro, AOC, FlyFF, SWG, ... all games are addictive when the person playing the game has a big interest in the setting of the game, lore of the game or just the gameplay.

I've found that comparing mmorpgs is just like comparing colors. There's just no way to say what color is on top, tough you can judge the popularity of a game for sure. Then again there's no way in stating the most popular game is the best one out there...

To sum it all up, I'm sure WAR will find his fair share of addicts sacrificing sleep in order to level, gain rewards, etc...  I'll be there along with the guys and girls I know and play with to give it a try ;) As so I've been with all the previously mentioned games :)

Cya ingame!

i actually gained instead of lost relationship and friend wise.

Keep in mind when reporting such things, bad news gets ratings, Why do you always hear about killings? because its ratings.

You hear the good alot less, their are plenty of people in MMO's who have made friends and some even got married.

Right on. Bad news always gets more news than good things, and most people actually believe it, yes its true but its actually so minor. They squeeze something so small and yet make it seem so big. IMO WAR will be way more addictive because I never had fun with WoW, had 2 epic 70s got bored...So, if you're PvP Centric maybe WAR will be more addictive. WAR will be more addictive IMO also because it basically fits the missing parts in WoW, good PvP, good graphics, good fun, etc.

Impossible to say, Wow had hold the intrest of some players for 4 years, that is quite impressive with only one expansion. Even players in the WAR beta since it started ai'nt close to that so will see in time.

There's different levels of addictive. There's addictive 'If I don't play I'll kill myself (those folks need help obviously) and then then theres addictive 'I want to play as much as I can....but I know I have a real life so I'll stop to eat, sleep and poo'.

Is it over yet...

I suppose it all varies depending on perception. As someone said, Wow can be about as addictive as pee. Then again you mite only ever had Acid to drink, so pee may be addictive. In which case if Wow is Wine to you and War is Rum.. wait thats taste.. See how twisted it gets?

From what I've seen yes, yes it will be addictive I think Wow tasted like... Root Beer.. Which I like. War is like.. Root beer float.. Even better

Not even gonna bother to read the entire thread. The addictive nature is based on a persons personality. Any relationship or life ruined because of WoW was the players fault and not the games.

You would be surprised how few people care about what you have to say.

I hear ya there. ;)

And will WAR be as addictive as WoW? The question probably sounded more complex than it is.

If I love it, then yes. If I don't, then... no.

People tend to get addicted to things they greatly enjoy. ;)

Either games have really started to suck recently or I am no longer susceptible to 'addictive' gameplay elements. I haven't felt compelled to play any MMORPG since probably around spring and summer of 2005 with World of Warcraft. I think I've developed an immunity to MMOs.

Well, you can look at the reasons that WoW is addictive and compare them to what WaR is slated to have if you want to talk comparisons between the two games.

As I see them, some addictive qualities of WoW:

1. The grind.  A general term that encompasses quite a bit of the addiction, the quality of the game to present you with a reward based upon repeating certain tasks a number of times.

This is a well known psychological motivator that can lead to addiction.  There are even chemical reactions that take place in the neurology of people when they are presented with this form of reward motivation.  You can read up on the chemical "Dopamine" on wikipedia if you'd like to know a little more about this, too much to talk about here.

Now, WoW has a great deal of grind action going on.  Grind instances, levels, battlegrounds, arenas, reputations (factions), tradeskills, gold to name some.  These things give the player a sense of reward after repeating the task so many times they have some kind of improvement to their character to look forward to.  In simplest terms, I think people become addicted to an extent by this sort of repetitive, monotonous activity.  The body is relaxed while performing these tasks, dopamine is shooting everywhere, and when this stops...you may find yourself craving more of this activity to stimulate the same response, as mundane as what you're doing actually is.

Will WaR have this same motivational principle?  Remains to be seen but I'll make a quick comment here about the hormone adrenaline.  WaR is slated to be more PvP (RvR) oriented as a whole than WoW.  Personally thats where I find my adrenaline rush in these games.  It never...ever...happens to me when playing a game until I'm out in the world somewhere fighting in PvP either solo or organized.

There doesn't have to be any stakes involved simply seeing a fight coming my way sends that adrenalin rushing.  Heart starts beating faster, start bouncing the knees, sit upright at the desk...get focused etc...and if you win you or lose you nonetheless get the "thrill" of the action.  That's a big draw of these kinds of games if the PvP is done well.

If WaR is going to be a game where you can log in, jump right into either organized or solo PvP action fighting players or for objectives (that matter to your realm) and have fun doing it then I can indeed see it being very addictive to me personally.

Getting lost for hours in the game losing track of time, only worried about what's happening to my character and team...thinking "in the moment" as you act and react to the frantic strategies and chaotic battles taking place, then at the end taking it all in and realize that you built up some reward and achievements for your participation, I can see that being very addicting personally.

That feeling was around early on in WoW for me, but dissipated over time by the sheer lack of variety in the options they give you to participate in these kinds of moments.

WAR promises to hold more venues and scenarios in the game as  a whole for this type of gaming and hopefully will offer all of that, time will tell.

I would type more but this post is already long and I think I've said what I meant to here.
