My copy of conan is coming today and I am seriously concerned.  The ranting on these forums aside and even if you brush them aside with "they are the minority" you cannot ignore that the quiet majority have voted this game so low.
I am tempted to leave it in its wrapper for 6 months.
(I used to play world of warcraft and loved it however I got a sparky new 8800gt which has issues with the game like many people and Im hoping wotlk will sort them out.)
Several things worry me about aoc, one is the extreme control on the official forums.  Blizzard whether you hate their game or not allow pretty much freedom of speech unless you are seriously abusive.  Whether they respond to certain issues though is another matter at least they allow people to voice their concerns.
It seems that the game is very detached from its community which is a shame and is essential to a successful operation.
I am an EU player and am waiting for that game with the X-Factor that I had in the first 2 years of Darkage of Camelot and 1st year of planetside.

Pay no attention to the haterz. I suggest you install the game and try it out for yourself, it's funny how people hate the game so much that they spend their time coming here to post negative comments. I am playing the game right now. This is my honest opinion:
1. Is the game Buggy? Yes it is, I don't agree that it is so buggy that it is unplayable, Ive gone countless hours without dealing with bugs,  but they are actually doing a great job on fixing those issues with each patch.
2. Is the game boring? No, I don't think so at all..Games are only as fun as the individual allows it to be.
3. Hows the combat system? 1 word "AWESOME" the combat system rocks and it is the 1st of its kind, no other game has fatalities in it, making it exciting to finish off a mob by cutting off his head in slow motion. (There are many other fatalities in the game, depends on the character) The combat system owns every other mmo in its genre. It requires more skill than just simple clicking of an Icon, if you miss a directional arrow it could spell death for you, so it requires that you interact more AKA "Skill" it requires more skill and thought because you never know what to expect from the enemy.
If you don't like that kind of combat system and you want to play something that requires " NO" skill at all then I would suggest  WOW, EQ2 where all people do is click click click icons or spam macros.
4. Is the game going to DIE out? No I think that despite some bugs, Funcom will and have fixed the major issues that are causing problems for some of the players. I have characters on 2 PVE and 2 PVP servers and the servers are usually packed with people, all depends on the time of the day that you play. The key here is to learn to be patient and problems will get fixed.
Try the game out for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

Voting polls are worthless when it doesn't include every single mmo player, not everyone comes to this site.

1) It very much IS UNPLAYABLE at the end game. And when you can play it runs like a piece of shit.

Oh and patches "fixing stuff every week" ? Bullshit, patches break more then they fix!

2) Yes. When you get to only grinding over and over you wonder why you are doing that in an MMO these days.

3) Slow, clunky, boring, undynamic. These words can much better sum up the combat system.

4) Yes I think it will die.

If You say that the game is unplayable @ 80 then why in your 3rd comment did you say it was boring, clunky, and undynamic. Couldn't have been too much of any of that if you played all the way to lvl 80. Doesn't really make much sense to keep on playing if all that was occuring, but thats just my opinion.

1) I disagree with you.  Yes I have 1 lvl 80 and a few mid lvl 50 chars. End game I have raided and castle sieged/defended. The game is very playable even @80. There were many places I didn't have a chance to go to because I soloed my way to 80 and now that I am in a guild we are raiding those places.

2) Name 1 mmo that doesn't have gridning involved

3) Probably because you have a low end commodore64 system.

4) Probably isnt the 1st $50 people have wasted on games or anything else for that matter.

Love your number 3 always fanbois saying crap like this. I think the game could have been good, but imo it was fundamentally messed from the start. The world feels small, combat was ok, community is terrible, and last but not least it s run by a company that has no clue what they re doing. Enjoy the game if you do, but theres no problem someone posting why they don t.  It won t die but it will be way down there on the sub numbers with games like Vanguard imo.

It's been very, very interesting watching this game's ratings here at MMORPG.com.

When AoC launched it had the highest rating of any MMO:  8.7  (The extra decimal place has been added to ratings since then.)

By July 10 it had dropped to 8.0.

End of July it was at 7.78.

August 5 it was 7.72 and the next day 7.69.

Today, just 4 days later, it's down to 7.59.

In short, the game is plummeting.  It is the absolute lowest of the AAA MMO's.  It's lower than many free to play and micro-transactional MMO's.  And if anything, the score is droppage is accelerating.  It's certainly not leveling off yet.  I really have to wonder just how low it will go?  As things stand now, it's threatening to drop below Matrix Online.

Several things worry me about aoc, one is the extreme control on the official forums.  Blizzard whether you hate their game or not allow pretty much freedom of speech unless you are seriously abusive.  Whether they respond to certain issues though is another matter at least they allow people to voice their concerns.

Well yeah, that tells you something about Blizzard and their forums. FC deletes posts and moderates like they do because they either got something to hide or do not want to face the truth about the games shortcomings. Not answering or allowing for constructive criticism on the forums just shows how lame this company is.

I voted for Obama.

As someone who followe Age of Conan from the day it was announced until now, and as someone who had very high hopes for the game, here is my advice to the OP.

Return the game for a refund.  While the game isn't horrible, it isn't very good either.  The combat is nice but it will only carry you so long before the grind gets boring.

The world is too restrictive, the gameplay is too linear.  This game makes WoW feel like a sandbox, that's how restrictive it is.

Save your money, save your time.  The game isn't what so many of us had hoped it would be.

To the OP. If you really want the buzz you had from DaoC then I suggest you wait 38 days and then try and see if WaR can give it, since its the same people making that game, and they have RvR in it like in DaoC too.

No garantees though, it could suck bad.

As to installing AoC; I waited and watched AoC develop for over 3 years and I bought the hype. The game ended up being extremely mediocre, very bugged and with no vision to what the endgame should be about. And what makes it worse is that FunCom treats their customers like filth, ignoring and cheating them.

I actually think that the company will flounder soon, look at the faces of FunCom people lately and look at the increasing hysterical way they try to prevent negative voices and look at how they increasingly try to scam money from people who have canceled. Its all signs of disaster.

So no I dont think its worth your time to play it even the free month. You will gain nothing for your time since there is no point in lvling in this game. There is nothing in the gameworld that you can spend your lvled toons abilities on.

Just wait for couple of more patches, if you are casual gamer you can go for it as end game is lacking any decent content.

On the side note you can ignore posts from those using avatar:

There are lot more players that quit the game and will give you far better review what was wrong with it.

Avoid the game if you wanna play it for more then ten days and are used to something with a higher quality of craftmanship.

I would say try it and ignore the haters as it isn't that bad a game.  People tend to forget that even games such as WOW were buggy at release and didn't have much end game content at first.

The fact is  the patches have improved the game a lot and it is steadily getting better.  I prefer it to WOW now and only play WOW on maintenance nights.

I would have rated it 5 or 6 out of 10 at start and about a 7 now  and hopefully in the not so distant future even more.  I don't blame anyone who left the game as some of the things i agree with but in my opinion it really is improving.

It really is worth trying and i won't say you are going to love it but it does have some good points and hopefully more to come.

I forget no such thing.

WoW had bugs, yes.  But it released with all key systems having been heavily beta tested.  Funcom released AoC with many key systems having never been beta tested.  This includes crafting, most of the raid content, and the massive PvP system.  In software development terms, what we got from Blizzard was a genuine release candidate.  What we got from Funcom was the first true beta build.  The builds that were being "beta tested" were actually alpha builds because of the number of key systems that weren't yet in the game.

As for content, WoW launched with more zones than AoC has.  Its overall game play was less linear than AoC.  There was less grinding to reach maximum level.   I will give you that AoC has more end game content than WoW did at launch -- when you compare the two games on paper.  However, the majority of AoC's end game content at launch was unplayable and remains almost completely broken to this day.  WoW launched with more playable end game content than AoC did, and WoW took about four times as long for the average player to reach maximum level.  By the time enough players got to end game to actually participate in it, they were already patching in more.  With AoC, by the time Funcom finishes fixing what they supposedly launch with -- to say nothing of patching in new content -- most players will either have multiple level 80 characters or will have left the game out of boredom.

You just can't rationally campare the two games and come away saying that AoC is on the same playing field.  They're hardly on the same planet, much less in the same ballpark.

AoC can't be compared to other MMO's because its just a glorified single player RPG they put on the internet and let alot of people connect to.

It has no depth, no balance, half the game was removed just before launch because they couldnt stabilize it and make things work together. The patches are the worst of any MMO out there, they break more thant they fix. And the plumeting rating on this game stands for itself.

Add to that the dishonesty of Funcom about the game and charging CC's before the renew date is really eating at people. I'm beginning to wonder if Funcom is part of the European mafia?

Form 1st place 2 months ago at launch and today its in 67th place after droping again last night. If people cant see past that fact theres no hope for them.

Personally I think that the first 40 levels are pretty good.  Play it for a month then toss it.  It isn't any more expensive then any other game on the market and maybe by the time you get ot 40 they will have made the game tollerable and you will find another month a worthwhile investment.

I honestly enjoyed 1-80 and think that it is entertaining enough for the initial purchase given any person's preferences. It definitely has the most intricate gameplay of any other MMORPG (for melee characters), so if gameplay is your thing, then you will fall in love with AoC's combat mechanics.

Before you install the game make sure your drivers are up-to-date and that your graphics cards settings are properly configured, because this game's optimization is probably the worst on the market, which is my biggest gripe about the game beside lack of content.

This is mostly a PvP-combat game, so keep that in mind: PvE content, even though it has raids, is less than what you would have found in WoW at release.

The PvP content patch is also coming this Wednesday

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
