So, when was the last time Lufkin posted over at US forums?

I must say I am quite astounded by the ability of this community to whip itself into a righteous rage. Keep in mind that Funcom is a huge company, staffed by *gasp* people! People make mistakes, and it's not always easy to weed out all the bad. I am not saying anything about funcom, their buisness practises, or AoC itself. All I am saying is that a lot of the participants of this community might benefit from taking a step back, a deep breath and then, think about what you are actually getting so worked up about.

Simple problem with a simple solution. Lufkin apologizes, gets a warning mark, a few more strikes and he's gone. No need to fire anyone on their first major mistake. No need for over-zealous readers to want to see someone crucified. Formal apology and move on.

But the absolute WORST thing the company could do would be to just delete the thread and ignore it and hope it all goes away. That's going to do nothing but stoke the flames of discontent. That's the action in this thread that amazes me. Unbelievably dumb imo.

Actually that is exactly how it is with most jobs, especially where you are a representative of the company. Especially if you say what he did. People don't get second chances, or third, or so on like he already has. An apology followed by sacking is the norm. By the way, I and some of the other posters here have noted that this probably wasn't even a 'mistake'. Mistake would imply that he didn't mean to say that.

Im sensing lots of self-righteous hypocrisy here.  I can see that Lufkin was hated, but lets not pretend that a REALLY small comment like "rants are for women!" is some huge deal to all of you.

Its simply not possible for people to be that hypersensitive normally.  If you ARE *that* PC, then you've got some serious issues.

That comment was a typical macho jab that is very common in any circle that is mainly male.  I think any guy and all women realize that and arent deeply hurt when they read it (unless they need counseling)

The vast majority of women think that videogames are a pointless bit of stupidity as it is and fully expect guys to generally be juvenille, so lets not pretend this guy is some raging, dangerous, misogynist based on such a silly LITTLE comment.

The ENDLESS use of "gay" as a pejorative is FAR worse and I dont see anyone getting whipped into that kind of frenzy EVER.

Of course Im sure if this guy Lufkin did that, there would then be  a frenzy.

At least just admit that you hate LUFKIN and its not so much what was said but that HE said it.  Or are all of you going to pretend you've NEVER laughed at sophomoric humor in movies, on TV, from comedians, from friends, etc etc.  You really all sit there ENRAGED at Chris Rock, or Harold and Kumar or pretty much ANY OTHER pop culture comedy, eh?  Yah... OK.

The guy may very well be a jackoff, but its pretty obvious he was going for schtick in that post.  He clearly has embraced the "kick you in the nuts" type internet persona that  SO MANY seem to favor.

The ONLY thing Ill give you is that its probably not appropriate for an official rep to be, well, human, but I consider that unfortunate really.  EVERY corporate communication is sanitized and analyzed by lawyers and HR departments on the LOOKOUT for BS lawsuits (not out of any *real* sensitivity since there is no *real* harm 99% of the time).  I dont really think society is somehow BETTER for this totalitarian political correctness regime we now live under.

Maybe youve been in a cave but Lufkins antics have been well documented here as well as Famine receiving MANY PMs about the situation.

So exactly how long would it take you to cut out the cancer that is Lufkin ( and his kind) if it was your companies reputation that he was playing with?

Man, the sudden heavy PC culture that sprung up around a game that pretty much advertised itself as non-pc is kinda funny.  I showed my girlfriend the quote and she thought it was just a bad attempt at sounding humorous, and came off more cliched then insulting.  I understand many people are pissed off about how the game turned out (I quite after playing the game playing only two months, myself, and would not resub unless some drastic changes are made) but nitpicking ANYTHING you can about the company and it's represenatives is getting quite repetative.

If they released yet another patch that broke more of the game (I'm sure they will, just give em some time) I could understand yet another flame AoC/funcom thread, but a small, snark, cliched attempt at humor? Please..  And to get 7 pages of comments, with most of the posters carrying pitchforks and torches to burn down this Lufkin's modship?  If he randomly bans people, and closes threads that don't break any rules, I can see a thread for that, but this comment being portrayed as some hate speech is.. funny.. I'm sorry.. I rib my girlfriend, my mother, and my sister with cliched women jokes when they apply.  They understand the humor, and strangely, sometimes, the truth in those cliched statements. I don't see this comment in anyway holding back the fairer gender.  Many are just transfering their anger at the state of the game into any manisfestation of funcom that they can see.

"In EVE, no one gives a damn about a fair fight." - chafin

I dunno, it was an attempt at humor, but in this PC crazy culture we all live in people take things so seriously, and somehow turn this around as some sort of huge insult to all women everywhere.  It was a joke folks, albeit perhaps one that is in bad taste.  No reason to raise the pitchforks and start marching towards the castle.

A 'Catch-22', A thread about him banning people and closing threads can't exist on the AoC  forums, they ban posters and close those threads when people question the legitimacy of moderator's actions.

What has people so up in arms, is not this one particular comment, but Lufkin's continuing pattern of trolling in legitimate threads, bullying posters, and than deleting the evidence of his bad behavior. even more disturbing is FunCom's willingness to turn a blind eye to all this when the player base has reported his actions.  It speaks volumes about FC's general attitude that Famine lets angry fanbois flame and unfairly moderate the official forums.

The comment is clearly sexist.

It needs to be forwarded to joystiq, kotaku, and the other gaming sites.

You are missing the point. Funcom lied, then lied again, (PVP XP at launch, PVP patch end June; PVP patch in July etc) and then treated its customer base with mocking disdain. It is supercilious instead of humble.

People are now looking for ways to hurt it back.

This will happen in any mass public engagement scenario, but this is something a little more extreme.

So you're basically saying it's okay to blow every incident out of proportion as long as you have an axe to grind?Besides where has funcom mocked anyone ? If they had it would be all over this forum , there would be no need to discuss the actions of some fanboi mod.

Not really putting a value judgement on it. Just explaining where it's coming from.

It's not about the sexism per se, though they open themselves to attack becase the comment is in fact sexist.

Its that people see material here with which to hit back. As to out of proportion... well, no-one is calling for anyone's murder. They are asking for a snotty moderator to get canned. Don't think that's necessarily out of proportion.

Here is a mod who is alienating and aggravating a dwindling customer base. And now he's caught in making sexist comments. What do you expect?

As to the mocking - interviews going on about how great AoC is working it feels like mocking. Sarcastic responses to valid concerns feel like mocking. And claims that coming down the pike is all extra bonus content never promised at launch feels like mocking. (PVP XP? There are vids still around in which they are claiming it would be there at launch).

Thanks for clearing that up .The Mod in question has no place in such a position , that much is obvious. I just don't feel this slip up was all that bad ,It's worse how he takes a personally approach to his position .Which should be grounds for dismissal.

I'll admit my hypocrisy about many things but not comments or actions in someone else's house. If this happened here, the comment still wouldn't bother me but I certainly wouldn't defend it either.

Has there been any response from the female demographic yet?

I think the comment "stands on it's own" and should warrant a lot more than a reprimand. As for it not bothering you at all, I don't know what to say other than that might have a lot to do with the fact that you are a male and slightly detached from the situation. You wouldn't feel the same if such a snide jab were aimed at your wife or daughter.

Iin case you missed it, "this happened here"- just now in this thread.

Surely you jest about a female demographic in regards to AoC.

he does have a point with women and shoes, maybe the wrong place to say it but you should'nt get so offended. People get offend by the smallest things these days. I'm sure if it was a female mod making a joke at men no one would care..just chill out.

Not sure obviously since I don't know you from Adam but I am forced to wonder if your attitude that sexism and the like should be taken more lightly would have to do with the fact that you aren't considered a minority? As I made a strong point in saying already I could be wrong but I very rarely hear this sentiment from someone who has had to live with absurd stereotypes.

You honestly think this is different than when Don Imus says the things he says?

I have a better idea all together instead of people chilling out how about all of us who do not share these feelings including you as you seem to allude stand up and demand better from these people why not consider that even though it didn't hurt you personally it certainly did someone who in no way shape or form deserved to be put down.

i think it was just blown out of proportion, people like to jump on people these days about the smallest things, example you jumping on me over what i posted, nothing i said was sexist , i just stated that people are over reacting and   too serious, life is way too short to let something like this get to you. i think it was more tongue and check than anything else. nothing to start a revolution over. everyone lives with stereotypes, we are all  stereotypes of some sort, some people get offended easier than others. No matter how much you do not like it , or how much it offends you, people are free to tell you what they think of you.

MMOs require more reasoning and imagination than most stereotypically ''adult'' activities.

8/11/08 7:47:43 PM#75

Well said, Jax.  Thank you.

Everyone comes with an inner voice that chimes in when you're about to say something stupid or insensitive.  I get the distinct impression that Lufkin can't hear that voice.  That combined with his weakness at english (which appears not to be his first language) make him a serious "fail" as a forum moderator.
