Honestly, some people are complaining about grinding in WAR. WoW even has complainers. Games these days are too easy. These people need to play EQ or something.... even FFXI was pretty serious.

+1 troll post.

Because grinding is boring, and having fun is fun?  thus people don't like grinds.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

I dunno, maybe because they want a game to be fun?  Wow, quite a weird thought right?  A game being fun and not a job.  It sure is a hard concept to wrap your head around...

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

I agree with OP,mmo without grind and you might as well play barbie online or what ever, imo it is the grinding that makes mmo's fun.Showing up the items you found in yesterdays grinding for your friends:-)

Well, my favorite progessions in MMO are both SOE games.

Star Wars Galaxies professions when it was first released.  You could be 5 or 6 professions at once.

And Planetside.  This is how MMO skills should be.  Not based on levels, but on unlocks for playing the game a certain amount of time/achievements.

EvEOnlines skill progression system is ok, but the real time training kind of sucks if you like to get in and progress quickly.

"Silence is golden, duct tape is silver, but the White Border of Darkfall rules over all!"

Ok for me there's two types of "grinding".

1) Grinding dozens of mobs quickly, slicing through them, destroying them, laughing maniacally as I tear them limb from limb.

2) Killing hundreds of mobs...but only one or two at a time.

Obviously the first one will be much more fun than the second, but since not everyone can be super mega awesome heroes in MMOs, they tend to be like the second type. Which is boring for me, and for many other people.

--------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Order of the White Border.

I don't mind pvp grind but pve grinding is a##numbingly boring & I'd rather be doing something funner. WoW has the most boring pve & pvp grind i've ever seen in an online game I've played. At least when I played DAOC and was grinding rvr it was fun fun fun! :)

When I played WoW I had to grind to the highest level only to find the battlegrounds were crap and the game was more geared toward  big guild raiding pve.  I did that for months on end for 7 or 8 hours a day only to have to upgrade all my equipment because there was something better I needed to grind for. Do that 3 or 4 times it feels like a job not a game you play for fun.

Well a game won't last two years if the grind is boring. If the focus of the game is end game content, lvling better not be too long. However, if you want a game with a long grind you better have good stuff all the way through or people will obviously get pretty bored.

Since WAR seems to be pretty heavily focused in end game content and there is more to grind than just lvls I suspect that the grind to 40 won't be too huge. Id suspect even less than lvling to 60 in WoW.

Agree with the OP and Kazson.

There's gotta be a grind, and WoW...is not a grind... people who say WoW is a grind have not played original EQ/L2/FFXI

For a game that takes a decent amount of time to max out I say EQ2 was the best on being fun with minimum grind. Killing 1000's of the same mob is not fun. However I don't mind having to do 35 quests just to gain one level as long as they have decent rewards to keep you coming.

I like grinding, I would rather grind 2k mobs for a level than do 20 quest. It's why I quit LOTRO, not enough grind :P

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

Actually, no it isn't. Lookup Gemstone IV and play the 30 day trial. It takes a hell of a long time to cap a character, and it isn't a grind at all, ever.

They got the formula right, but I expect others are loathe to copy their system or mechanics for fear of a lawsuit.

WoW doesn't have a level grind, it has a gear grind.  WAR will have a realm rank grind more than anything, so if you enjoy PvP you shouldn't notice it much.

because if i am paying for a game  i expect to be entertained..grinding on the same mob over and over is not fun and if you pay for that sort of thing, then you're stupid.

That is the exact reason I left WoW. I love any type of pvp because it usually doesn't have the same results as before. Battleground in WoW felt like a job which isn't fun. WAR seems to have this RvR concept down which will fulfill my pvp needs.  Anyways I'd rather go against humans that npcs anyday.

WoW doesn't have grinds? One should be either blind or careless to state such a false thing.

Reputations with X, Y, Z, mother of X, mother of Y, mother of Z factions? Hello... When they released (or expanded I should say) that stupid reputation thing I quit WoW (at burning crusade).

grinds are great if you can do them in a new, fun, and exciting way. You want more than "Ding! You are now level x after grinding over 9000 mobs...now go grind more!"

I dont think you can ever please people as far as grinding is concerned...If you make it fast leveling they hit max level in a week ,get bored and quit.....If you make it slower then they call it a grind and dont like that either....I remember starting in WoW after playing EQ and remembering how easy the leveling was in comparison at the time....Now all I hear is how much of a grind WoW is.....THen I see games like AoC come out...Half the players complain about what a grind it is and half say that the leveling is too fast and they can make 80 in a few days......I think players need to decide whats a reasonable amount of time to hit max level....... 50 hours??100 hours? 200 hours? 400 hours??

I think some people forget what 'grind' is.

Grind is when you are doing something repetetive and boring just to get to the next level or whatever.  If you are enjoying the process of levelling up (even if it is somewhat repetetive) then it isn't a grind.

Of course what constitutes grind is down to some level of personal opinion, but generally we all agree that repetative unchallenging tasks are boring.

Why shouldnt we complain about mindless repetition?  That is not entertainment - which is ultimately the purpose of games.

You would be surprised how few people care about what you have to say.

Bingo.

The Grind is not a tangible thing. It's not a routine -- routines are everywhere, including our hobbies and careers. The potential is in every game. But the Grind is a feeling and a concept.

The Grind is directly tied to another huge MMO marketing term, "Immersion". If you feel immersed -- however you prefer and manage to feel it -- you won't feel the Grind.
