To live free is worth dying for.

I'm asking this because Mythic is obviously building on the foundation of DAoC for WAR it stands to reason that if you played DAoC it might give us insight into what WAR will be, and not be like in terms of core mechanics of gameplay.

I played DAoC at launch with my EQ guild.  We wanted something different from EQ, and DAoC was it.

I remember the smooth launch, the amazing scenery, and the first time I wandered out into the frontiers to check things out, and got into RVR.  I HATED PvP up to that point.  100% dyed in the wool carebear was I.  But that first night, it stoked a fire in me, and I was hooked.

I played for about 6 months, I quit for one reason.  No kidding, I got bored with the PVE grinding.  I HATED IT.    To the core did I detest the PVE in DAoC.  I wanted to be out PVPing, and wa unhappy Mythic didn't deliver on their "PVP/RVR from level 1!" promise (yes, they in fact did promise that, hell I think it was on the box to be honest with you)

I'm looking forward to WAR actually delivering on that part.  I'm fine with PVE, but PVE is in the end, dull.  It's the same thing, over and over.  Go kill some mindless computer entity.  RVR/PVP was always a dynamic situation.  The more "open" it was, the more exciting it is.  BG/Scenarios are OK, but they tend to break down easily into Zerg to Objectives.  Be interesting to see if WAR's Scenario's are as prone to becoming PVE rushes as WOW's AV is.

Played it from launch and loved every minute of it I went to uni last september and stopped playing I tried other mmorpgs but nothing and I mean nothing was as good. It gives you this fix that nothing else does, lol, sounds like a drug addict but it's true. I'm just hoping thst the RVR system in WAR is as good and I'll be playing greenskins as the side reminds me of midgard. It has changed ALOT and I'm not kidding I liked waiting on the teleport pad with others now its just run up click where you want to go and bam which strangely isn't as fun. The dyes were another feature I loved but not only that Thidranki, 3 sides trying to capture the keep was amazing.

If they made a sub where you get both war + daoc in one I'd take it out.

WHAT TO PUT IN HERE

7/26/08 6:02:56 PM#3

I played DAoC for almost 5 years. My uncle has a friend that works at Mythic, and he knew I was into gaming so he sent me a copy shortly after release. It was my first love, and I'm planning on going back for origins.

I played on Hiberna for about a year with an Elven Shadowblade and a Lurikeen Eldritch, before switching over to Albion after watching my little sister fool around on a friar. I rolled a Highlander Paladin, and played her for almost 3 years, before the remainder of my friends quit. I bounced around servers for a while, before landing on Gaheris (I think), where I had a Valkyn Hunteress for the remainder of my time ingame.

I love, love, love, love DAoC, and it's the primary reason I first grew interested in WAR. I can't wait for the Origin's server.

Butt Kicking for Goodness!

7/26/08 6:24:46 PM#4

My dad got into the beta for the original DAoC and I ended up playing it while he was at work.  I had a lot of fun with my Minstrel because the idea of a character who used music as their weapon was appealing.  Eventually, I got my own account and made a Highlander Paladin...   Occasionally I rolled another toon on another realm and/or server, but didn't stick with them for too long.  Once WoW released I switched to that, only returning once the classic server released and I had been bored with WoW for quite sometime.  After getting another toon up to 50 and playing for awhile on Gaheris, I tried out various MMO's.  Ultimately, I stuck with WoW until I hit 70 there and got bored with the constant grinding and meaningless PvP after a month.  And so, after trying out various games again, I'm back on DAoC with my Valkyrie on Ector.

Once Origins releases I'll roll a Hibby and play around there until WAR releases.  And there are 3 reasons I'm switching to WAR once it releases.

1)  From what I've seen, Mythic is making one hell of a great game.

2)  It'll be a nice change from anything else out there.

3)  As long as WAR doesn't tank, we'll still have hope of seeing Imperator; albeit, not for quite some time...  And yes, I was looking forward to that more that WAR.

Played DAoC for years, quit because of population, and it's still the best PvP in any MMO.  Played WAR, nothing like it.  I think a lot of the DAoC fans aren't going to be pleased with it, but we'll see.

I played DAoC for a year and a half, and simply became the top dog most realm points most hated player on my server (different name, which I will not reveal). My guild and group of 8 were a killing factory. We would take keeps like clockwork, have all 8 group members carrying battering ram equipment, lead relic raids, and kill enemy parties thrice our size. I remember our party of 8 killing 32 enemies trying to break through the milefort once. Times were grand. Eventually though, I graduated college and had to enter the real world. The game got a little repetitive as well and I always wish I had chosen one of the other realms on my server which had lower population, so I would have had more targets to sweep. I decided to head on out eventually, and now I had a wife and two kids, so I don't know if those times will ever return .

One reason i quit is because the pvp was pointless. You would take a bunch of keeps, and then after you logged off, the enemy would just take them all back. Then the next day you would have to start all over.

Also, character skill customization was poor. Your ranger was pretty much the same as everyone elses ranger

And crafting was pointless when I left. Looted items were much better than crafted items.

I played for over two years after launch, and then finally quit in disgust at persistent class (and realm) imbalances. The class I had chosen was one of the first to die on the battlefield, all of the time, and because of that end-game just wasn't fun after a while.

I trust they have given a bit more thought to balance from a character perspective in WAR.

Cynical? Me? Never.

The first time I quit was due to ToA. After they fixed, and tweaked it I quit for a couple of reasons. The insane DPS casters are able to pump out, the decline of light tanks/melee, and the population. Those are the 3 major reasons.

See, I here both sides. Some people I know in Beta say DAOC fans will be disspointed.  Otehr's like the two guildes that are in beta say " Its everything you would have hoped DAOC would have been."

Played DAOC from release to about 8 months ago. In WAR beta and i feel it is what DAOC should have been. That said for it s time DAOC was amazing but WAR is that RVR and beyond. It truly is an awesome game.

I played DAoC for two years and enjoyed it, but I left shortly after WoW was released.  My reasons for leaving was 1) The people I played with went to play WoW full time and 2) The population dropped, so it was difficult to find people to group up with during the times I played.

Played from release. Quit due to population drop, ToA, and other games that looked interesting. Planetside drew me away for a while, but I came back. WoW ruined me on ease of use and polish. Nothing has ever compared to the large RvR battles in DAoC though.

MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR
Playing: WAR

Sad to admit it, but I quit because my guild moved to SWG.  We then didn't like that so went back to EQ.  EQ2 came out so went to that and that sucked so we went back to DAOC.

After awhile some guildies that were playing WoW convinced us to switch over. Been there for about 2 and half years.

Now my guild are wow addicts and I can't get them to move to war. Crappy considering how successful we were in DAOC.

EDIT: Ahh sorry, I probably didn't answer the question correctly. We moved from DAOC cause of population issues.  We had a choice to move to brand new game or reroll on a better server. We choe the new game.

I played for 10 mins and quit because the UI sucked and controlling the character felt like moving a brick around, was sooo slow and stiff.

Then you are going to hate everything about WAR and you should leave these forums because we are all idiots and you are obviously superior. Please...we are not worthy...just leave us to out simple mindedness.

/sarcasm off

But in all seriousness...why do you even come to these forums then?

I am just wondering if you got your 93 Nerd Score by speaking like Yoda.

"And if did so, why'd you quit?" If I did 'So' as in listen to the Peter Gabriel album?  I did 'So' several times, it's really good.

"100% dyed in wool carebear was I", my young padawan.

"what WAR will be, and not be like in terms of .."  This is a bit Ying Yang to me.

"I HATED PVP up to that point...I got bored with PVE grinding, I HATED IT".  So now we've established you hate PVE and you hate PVP... I guess you're looking for a game that's all crafting and chatting.

"to the core did I detest the PVE in DAoC" ... You mean to the Molten Core?  Who are you asking?

"I am looking foward to WAR Actually delivering on that part."  On what part, you just started a paragraph.  Your last paragraph finished with some lies about what was printed on the DAoC box.  You want WAR to not have imaginery lies on their box?

Then after that you go on about something including WoW battlegrounds and a diatribe about PVP being more challenging than PVE.  If I were a programmer, I could make a PVE encounter that would whipe out your guild seven times a week and twice on Sunday. PVE is as challenging as you make it. If you just zombie your way through PVE encounters "oh no, we cannot try this dungeon without a Priest or Cleric, by the way, my bra-strap is a little too tight, can you help me out?" then yeah, PVE is boring.  But it turns out that PVE and PVP are both programmed by the same species.  In PVP there's a little more random factor, but in the end, it's the people with the best gear that win.  If you equalize the gear, it's rock paper scissors, just a random draw.  'Oh, no, PVP takes skill', that's the biggest lie in MMO's.  PVP doesn't take any more skill than PVE.  People who are shitty at PVE (90% of the players) are shitty at PVP, and vice versa.

That is a completely made up statistic. I have never met somebody who was great at PVP and then sucked at PVE but I meat all kinds of people who are awesome at raiding but are garbage in PvP. I imagine since it works one way that this means there are people who can't raid a dungeon but own in some pvp.

It's ok. You should see grimfall's blog about PVP.  It bounces from one topic to another and really doesn't make any point. Much like his posts.

And when i finaly upgraded my comp it was few laters later right before wow come out so i ended up playing . I tried daoc later cause i was bored of wow and liked it but population was just not there .

But i had lot of fun in the 30-39 BG. I remember at least 30 of us trying to break the door while we were getting nailed by mage on top of the castle lol good time .
