kotaku.com/5029183/nickelodeon-rolls-out-avatar-mmo Just caught this article on Kotaku a little excited, but after reading deeper in my excitement quickly faded. There's even a video of the Beta version linked in the press release which just kind of made things worse. The jist of the game appears to be an arena fighter where low quality characters models run and jumpa round and spam one of four attacks that they're allowed to choose from before starting a match. Frankly, it seems more like a weak marketing ploy from the idiots are Nickelodeon who think they can make things that actually appear to be games. I'm a fan of the Avatar tv show and I think that as far as making an MMO goes, Avatar has a ton of great source material that could make for an amazing game if it were put in the right hands. The game is due out in September, and apparently, Nickelodeon wants to pad it's ratings by re-airing Season 3 of the show with tips and ticks from the games tossed in so there's an incentive to watch. I don't want to get into some anti-corporation tyrade, but this whole thing just bothers me and just goes to show you that Nickelodeon really doesn't know how to treat the best thing that's happened to them in years. Thoughts? Opinions? Angry Rants? |

I'm all bummed about the show coming to an end and this is just salt in the wound. A good real MMORPG based on Avatar is possible but it would take time, money and effort. Three things companies don't want to spend when it comes to a video game based on a children's IP.

Honestly... I enjoy the Avatar series. Its a good idea for a strong MMO... but this IS NOT an MMO and i really wish that all these different people would stop slinging that word around like its going to make people drool. |

Lets break down the meaning of MMO..
Massive Multiplayer ONline. So any game that has online multiplayer is technically an mmo. The difference between them is the last 3 letters, Whether it is a G or an RPG. Like guild wars is an MMO - G, while WoW is a MMO - RPG.
That said, that avatar game is pretty whack. Its obvious it is build ont he quake 3 engine, the game looks like bid for power if anyone remembers that. I didnt even read the article but This game has the story, the ip and the depth to make a real MMORPG, and an enjoyable one. Children ip or not, most people are so into cencorship that a childrens game is right up their alley.
Nickelodeon needs to take the time to make a real MMO - RPG before rushing to belt this one out just to capitalize on the current end series hype. Trust me the fans will still be there no matter how long it takes to make. |

A game is an MMORPG when a large amount of people have the ability to play in the same online persistent world. It's not about the last 3 letters, it's about the first ones. Games like Guild Wars are RPG's, RPG stands for Roleplaying games. Games like Guild Wars are ONRPG's (Online Role playing games) while a game like World of Warcraft is an MMORPG. |

Its late.. youa re going to have to explain how what you said is any different then what i said. And guild wars doesnt call itself an rpg, and up until its 4th expansion it called itself an mmog, until it adapted that corpg nonsense a term nobody uses except them. |

Couple of things. 1: You said every game with online multiplayer is an mmo. this is incorrect, only games which hold a massvie amount of people in a persistent world are mmo's. 2: You said Guild Wars is an MMOG while WoW is an MMORPG. Again this is incorrect, Guild Wars is an Onrpg, while wow is an MMORPG. Guild Wars is a roleplaying game that is online, it's just not a massively multiplayer game. WoW is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game as players in the same, persistent world. Guild Wars has ALWAYS called itself an RPG, it has never called itself an MMO. |
