Every MMO since WoW - Been there, done that... I'm a ranger! I can use a bow, track players, and set traps! I'm an armored tank! I can use swords, shields, and taunt enemy players to hold aggro! I'm a healer! I can wield maces and heal players! I'm a mage! I can mez m enemies and nuke them! I'm a pet class! I can use pets and throw dots! Seriously, every game is the fricken same. It's so funny how new entities think that they are coming out with something original when they simply rename WoW's talent tree to "feat", "spec", or "enhancement". It's all the same garbage. Is there any game that will let you mix and match professions? Is there a game that doesn't have the same old "epic", "heritage", or "destiny" storyline? Ugh, it's gotten to the point where everyone is just so sick of it all. When will we get something new? I'm yearning for a new game where the devs just throw you into whatever virtual world and say, "Do whatever you want". There are no quests, there are no set armors (clones), and there are no items that have the exact same attributes (I want a Diablo II style looting system where the stats are totally random). I'll be back once they come out with something new. Until then, they can all just smell my arse, as I'm sick of playing 10 different versions of WoW (Yes, I know WoW wasn't the first, but it has, however, set the first precedent and is dubbed the best). |

LOL I hear ya.. I hear ya.
fortunately I play to play with my friends, not the game itself. That being said, WOW has definitely defined the genre to the public (not those of us here) and here's to hoping something new and clever comes out..
heck here's to hoping that a game comes out and puts a gui on some of the most advanced muds. |

Throw you into a world and just say "do whatever you want"? sounds like EVE to me. no classes, no "destiny" storyline about you saving the world. just a world for you to play around in.
Give it a shot, use the trial, don't buy right away. its very different from other MMOs so you may find you like those WoW clones more. But if it is for you, then you'll fall in love after a few days.
beware the learning curve! Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats. |

Google "MMORPGMaker" if you want to make your own MMORPG. |

It starts with Dungeons and Dragons, Healer, Nuke, Tank. THEN it goes to EQ, and THEN it goes to WoW. I understand, you started the whole thing with WoW, but some of us started with dice and pieces of paper. |

mmo's have all been "been-there-done-that" years before WoW came out. Thats why I never touched WoW. Its more of the same. Its done better, but same is the same no matter how well you polish it. |

Aha, and games befor WoW didn't have healers and tanks or even rangers... right? And as soon as a game dares to be different, people bash it. Like Guild Wars, came out after WoW, but often forgotten - of course. Why stick with MMORPG's btw. Try a MMORTS, or whatever is out there. You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up. |

LOL, you know what, one of the first graphic MMO's, Ultima Online has all the features you requested in your OP. MMORPG's have evolved far from that original model I'm afraid. Hopefully some INDY games like DF, Earthrise or others can bring us back more towards the center.

GRIND DOES NOT EXIST. IT IS ENTIRELY YOUR PERCEPTION. |

Personally I think a game without a storyline is completely boring. When I log into a game, any game, I want to know there is a reason for what I'm doing. Why am I building this or fighting this or learning this, whats the point. A story does not have to be linear, nor hold your hand, nor even force you to do anything, but there should be a background story to give a reason for what your doing. Venge Sunsoar You know, in ancient Egypt. One of the hieroglyphics on the walls of the pyramids actually says 'I am upset as my heir will ruin my kingdom' or something to that affect. This is 5000BC stuff and you know what? Nothing has changed. :P |

Need more information about what your talking about. Which games other then WoW are you referring to and whats the point of your post. Are you saying many games don't have a story line or WoW doesn't have a story line. All MMO's have grinds. If you don't like to Grind then MMO's are not for you. |

it's obvious he's referring to sandbox style where the gmae has no content but rather has systems for gamers to do stuff resembling content.

Real Life MMO sucks,I killed afew lvl 10s and got thrown into jail for no reason, they aggroed me first, honest .. that ball attack does alot of dmg, they almost got me,but my trusty katana made quick work of them! Also GMs took all my items away and gave me generic items.. they even took my pimp hat wich I went threw alot of trouble aquiring from the Pimp boss,I had to smack afew of his minions first for him to show! |

Try City of Heroes/Villains. It has "archetypes" that are a bit likethe classic "classes", but there's a lot more mixing and matching in the powersets. In fact, the mixing and matching of primary and secondary powersets is such good fun in that game that, despite the fact that CoX lacks endgame, and until recently lacked crafting, and some of the other traditional MMO trappings, it has still been a relative success. Part if the reason is that the "endgame" in CoX is just to roll another alt with a unique costume, concept, and combination of primary and secondary powersets. |

D&D you are still limited in what you can do. You have set skill sets to chose from depending on the class choice, just like in CoX...if you chose to make a blaster you will be a heavy dammage dealer, the only thing that changes is how you do it (eg: ice, fire, energy). The only game that I can think of that did not have set classes was SWG-Pre-NGE. You want to use a sword, start hitting stuff with your sword and learning sword skills. You want to heal, start useing your basic heal skill and getting medic exp. You started that game with no skills, what you did and what you used determined what "class" you would be come, and you could allways change that at any time. The only game that comes close if Final Fantasy 11 with it's job system. You could level up every job independently on the same character and change to what your party or guild/Linkshell needed. |
