I wonder if other MMO's experience these huge downtimes that we do. I do not know about the other games, but really in this day in age you would think there would be more redundant system to keep it up 24/7. Not like its life or death of course its just a game but dang, 7 hours x32 servers ??

At the following time, we will be performing maintenance on all FINAL FANTASY XI worlds. During this period, FINAL FANTASY XI will be unavailable.

Since the maintenance operations are expected to require an extended period of time to complete, we will be performing the maintenance by splitting it in to two sessions. The date and time for the second maintenance will be announced once these details become available.

[Date & Time]
Jul. 21, 2008 from 9:00 to 16:00 (PDT)
* Maintenance completion time may be subject to change.

One thing you must remember is that FFXI is a unique MMO in the sense that its on 3 different platforms, PC, PS2 and Xbox360. Must be a task and ahalf to run things on their end sometimes, but to answer your question. My time in FFXI (around 2.5/3years) i did notice alot of downtime compaired to other MMOs, Hurts more for the EU/USA players to because FFXI is running off JP peak times.

You have got to be kidding ? The whole game is down 1 day a week. I mean 8 hours is basically the time some people play on the game. Btw not complaining .. discussing what seems like a lot of time with computers how they are now.

You know in all my years playing ffxi maintenance hasn't been too much of a issue for me. I have to say though since i moved to england it seems like the maintenance is done mostly during EU prime time. Which is kind of a drag. Can't wait to move back to the states.

Please feel free to leave a message.

I agree that the maintenance time-frame affects European and North American players more. Maintenance takes place during Japan's twilight hours, North America's daytime, and Europe's nighttime. Nonetheless, weekly downtime due to maintenance is routine for most subscription MMORPGs, and FFXI maintenance is decent compared to the rest.

I thought I would try this poll thing and see. I personally think its interesting since I thought FFXI was unique in its long downtimes. I thought WoW like Everquest did file checks when they started and thats how they got there updates. On FFXI that is all we have is software changes and updates to things but not regular reseting of system for any reason. As it is when our servers restart it also clears the timing on various parts of the game like the large mobs pop times.

Forum Poll

Does you MMO have regular downtime

1 time a week
1 time a month
Small percentage of time
To much time down
Never its down in backround

I don't understand your gripe. WoW is down 8 hours every tuesday.  They were down yesterday because they installed new servers.  I don't understand why you are bitching about it either because it's not that often.  I mean seriously.  They have even rolled out a new system of maintenance that they're going to use more often in that not all worlds will be down at the same time.

It's an MMORPG and no amount of redundancy can help some of the stuff they need to do. They cant very well patch a game while you play the thing.  It seems your lack of networking or computer knowledge in general is the basis for your confusions.  Stop complaining and go play and if you don't like the downtime, go to another MMORPG, where you are likely to experience much more. Or you could just play a regular RPG. Where the only downtime is your own.

EVE - Sharvala
FFXI - Shazamalicious
Guild Wars - Xavier Lucifer & Charlize the Necro

Live Life today, Because tomorrow is but a dream and yesterday only a
memory!

I hear exactly where you are coming from tebian but unfortunately this is a very common thing throughout MMO's some games take longer than others as they have bigger issues to resolve or just take that little more care not to put the servers back up with bugs still persisting.

What you should do is find an alternative game to play when the servers are down that day so you can still feed ya MMO cravings, i have several games i go between and it helps a lot especially for situations like this.
