While I agree that this is nothing new, I find the timing suspicious.  This is a direct attack at WAR's basic features.

Waiting for the next thing

How in the world is this an attack on War?

War will live or die on it's own merits, very little that Blizzard does will affect it.  We will just have to wait and see if Mythic lives up to it's comments about learning from DAoC.  If they have, War will be a success, if they have not, it won't.

Personally, I don't find this addition to Wow that enticiing.  Some will, others won't.  Just not a big deal.

In the end, it does not matter how much you hate for WoW to be a success, the fact is, the game is a HUGE success. They may have copied something from all other games, they may not have one single innovative thing in the game. But Blizzard knows how to make a game work and make it fun.

You can scream at the top of you lungs on how bad and evil the game is, you cannot get away from the fact that they know how to do it and the other contenders are always catching up. I know, I have tried a lot off MMOs in my attempts to get away from the "evil WoW".

Other developers have great ideas, but they don't know how to implement it properly. They excell in one thing to fail horribly in another.

The last hopes for some competition to WoW are Mythic and BioWare - and frankly, I am not holding my breath that WHO is going to be able to do it. BioWare is the best bet in my opinion. Turbine has an outside chance as well. They can make a decent MMO as LOTRO proved, but they need to learn from their mistakes there.

Sorry to burst your bubble, WoW did spend millions on advertising, didnt you see any of those?  but they put the advertisements out about 2 years after the game released.  They did do advertising a shit load before BC came out.

As soon as I saw the headline regarding player achievements on WoW, I thought they were bought by Microsoft. >>

I guess it is a good addition to a MMO,  especially for players who like the challenges. (which i hope are more challenging then just getting a haircut)

Make a WORLD,
Not a Game.

everyone does it, even flash game site Kongregate has badges.

but i hope WoW doesn't start having quests to obtain collectible trading cards in-game.  ack.

I've played Wow quite a bit.   The main problem with Wow, for me, is at the end game.   Once you get to 70, you're choices are pvp, raid, or let your character grow stagnate.     These cosmetic "badges" do zero to reinterest me.
