It was really strange watching a game die in front of me. It was oddly disturbing. Normally I'm fairly unaffected by games shutting down. Maybe it's just because this is one I played and kinda liked.
Sure, it was basically a Diablo rip off and didn't meet some of the criteria for an MMORPG, but it was a solid, fun game. Also it was one of the least buggy Betas I've ever been in. Can't remember a single technical problem in fact.
Maybe we'll see Mythos make come back with a new company at the wheel, but I honestly don't except to see that. It's just too bad Mythos didn't make it. That's all. |

I was looking forward to trying out Mythos, it seemed like most people were pretty satisfied with it. Something else that kinda sucks now (on top of the fact that we don't know if it'll ever be released) is that even if a new company takes over development they may not really understand the design of the game and it may never be as good as it could've been had Flagship finished it. Whoever takes it over is unlikely to have the same vision for it, and even if it does come out in time to still be relevent I bet it will just be another FTP micro-transaction grind-fest. It's really weird the way this whole thing developed, one day everything is progressing towards open beta nicely, and out of the blue a week or two later the game has been shut down. |

Awww! Mythos closed down?
I was really looking forward to it being released. I never played it, but it sounded like the thing I would try out since I like dungeon crawlers usually.
Oh well, back to Sacred and to TQ I guess... |

This was strangely sudden, at least to me. The "warning signs" have been there for weeks. Every game site out there, including this one, was printing the fiasco as it happened. Just all the fanbois declared everyone liars because the management kept denying shit while they made sure their nesteggs were secured. Hanbitsoft even went public with their intent to take Hellgate and Mythos from Flagshit, even publically chastised Flagshit for being greedy by firing the devs so they could keep the money when the game folded. It was Flagshit that denied everything up 'til they couldn't anymore. Roper and the other managers made sure to keep their positions in Flagshit while letting the real devs go so that they could keep money in their pockets. Frankly, this is the best way to go. With Flagshit at the helm, the games wouldn't last for very long ( we all know how bad Hellgate was doing here in the States ). At least the games have some kind of chance to be developed, and you guys can still play if you want, instead of losing the games completely. And since Hanbitsoft was already handling Hellgate in Korea and ostensibly would have handled Mythos as well when it launched, I'm sure they know more than a little about the code. But hey, at least they'll both likely be free to play. Except for an item mall or two. |

I am puzzled as to why mmorpg.com has had so little to say about Flagship/Hellgate/Mythos news. I played the beta for Mythos and thought it was quite entertaining. I logged on for a bit last night, and I, too, saw a game in its death throes. It reminded me of a grade B monster movie from the 1950s, with the towns all but empty of players and the general chat all lamenting the ... end. Mythos had great potential -- it was light, accessible, and imo quite fun. It'll be interesting to see if it is ever resurrected. Seeing the way Gods and Heroes went on indefinite "hiatus" also, however, I am not particularly hopeful. Zorvan, I hope you're right about Mythos being reinstated in some form... |

Maybe they gave them a months salary because they have an employment contract and that's what it states. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole statement about paying their staff out of their own pocket was just a trite statement. I worked for a company and the owners would say the same thing... everything was out of their back pocket. It wasn't really, though. Anyway, if they could afford to pay off all their employees with a month's salary, they were obviously taking home too much money for a game having significant problems. I haven't seen a statement that they were filing bankruptcy, so I assume if they had a contract with their employees and didn't observe it, they'd be opening themselves up to lawsuits. | |
