This is a bit long I know OP only said ONE thing but...

I think the skill point system is the way to go.  Keep that but become a "class" through point allocation.  Then have a higher tier "class" or "classes" in higher lvls that rewards players who didn't make a hybrid and want to specialize in their class further.   You can be a hybrid but will never reach the 2nd tier of class.   Alternativley you could make a class for every hybrid combination and limit hybrids to only 2 classes. You can also have more than 2 tiers, 3 tiers even!  I think this would mix the long road leveling with the old school game.

++Don't Pinhole us into being a Jedi but make the Jedi route everything it should be (friggin awesome)

++Smugglers, Enginneers, Pilots, Soliders, Jedi, Diplomats.--- This would be a great start to the class base from their you could have 2nd and 3rd tier classes of off these (Hacker, Sniper, Bounty Hunter, Commander, Dark Side, Light Side,  all sorts of stuff.)

++I think Droids should be a playable "race"

++Open Space combat (giant space battles) and travel as well as vehicular combat and travel on planets.

++Seamless transition from Outer space to entering a planets atmoshpere and landing.  You would reaaly get an idea of how BIG the planet your landing on is and It would be cool to strafe enemies with my y wing.

++Within each class give extensive amount of things to do to make the game sandbox.  It would be awesome to have another game that runs like EVE, completely autonmously. 

++Unique crafting and "quests" for your chosen specialty.

+Reward exploration --give us so many planets and secret areas that there is an Explorer Class!  Let us unlock the secrets of the Star Wars world with interesting Lore behind it.

I think thats everything.  We will see though, I may be describing just my dream game...
