$oE , destroying MMO since 1999.

-MMO will use better and better encryption of packet because computers can decrypt faster and faster, and botter programmers won't be good enough to decrypt them.

-Games will reside on servers and just send images to you, everything will be done on the server like a virtualisation of the game.

-Rules and courts will enforce EULA and copyright more and more. See recent Blizzard win over Glider.

Will it stop cheating completely? Maybe not completely, but it will be much better secured than before I think.

What do you think will stop cheating programs?

Good idea, but you have to make sure your consumers has the PC power (that is, not all gamers replace their PC when new tech comes out, some wait for 2 years to do that...  Other may choose to do it in months after the tech comes out.)

Interesting idea, but problems lies in INTERFACE.  If all the interfaces are needed to be done on SERVER side, then you will still get lag (server side).  Which is why they use client software to run all the graphics and let the servers to maintain data information.

May work, but this also opens up way too many issues in the long run.

I believe the re-design from the ground-up is needed.  To solve the cheating, we need to know the REASON behind it...  Some cheat because of the ridiculous focus of raiding (taking WoW for example), and in order to keep up some had to spent countless hours to do mundane stuff (people tend to get bored at this point), and with something like botter programs, gold-farmers and PL services, people would take the easy way out.

So from the game-play view, this need to be address in the game system design.

Waiting: Xenjo Journeys Online (Chinese MMO), Hero's Journey, TCoS, Dynasty Warrior Online, Stargate Worlds, Champions Online, LEGO Universe

Current MMO: Warhammer Online, Florensia Online, CoH/CoV, WoW
Past MMO: SWG, Lineage 2, VCO, 9Dragon, SoF, Hero Online, RFO, FFXI, PotBS, Perfect World, AoA, Cabal Online, Zodiacs Online (Chinese MMO), Mabinogi

Yet to Try/Test: AoC

You're asking two questions.

1. Botting

Botting will exist until developers realize that grinding is not necessary to provide players with a fun gaming experience and that character advancement is also possible without grinding.

2. Cheating

Cheating will always exist and it can never be stopped.  HOWEVER, it can be detected, patched, and punished quickly if developers consider it important enough to devote the required resources.

I never really thought about that. You're right that there is probably a lot of cheating because people get forced (in a way) to grind.

Might be better to try to solve that first.

I should try to look at it as 2 different entities.

Not a retired MMORPG.com mod

Obviously the developer needs to employ all the mechanics and programs required to limit cheating without ruining the game in the process, but ultimately the one thing that would make the most difference is community attitude.

There will always be someone who disagrees with the design of the game and feel justified in cheating rather than choosing to play a different game. If players hold cheaters in contempt and ostracize them, then most botters, hackers, dupers , exploiters, will stop or leave the game if their friends stand firm and refuse to have anything to do with them if they cheat.

So ask yourself: Are you willing to sever ties with your online friends if they refuse to stop cheating or will you pathetically look the other way?
