I think AoC is the worst in this regards.  It's the first game that actually has an X exactly where you need to go.  Some games have a radius outlined which is bad enough, but the X is a killer in regards to having to actually read the quest to complete it.  Even WoW does not show you exactly where you need to go for quests even though the quest summary tells you that.  Overall I try to read the quests so that I can get into the game, but many times I find myself skipping due to not having the patience at certain times.  It would be better if the quests just required you to read them so it would feel like it was an extra chore you were doing, but actually something you need to do.

Nope it is not. Legend of Zu will automatically run you to the spot too.

And you can easily use a WOW addon to mark where the relevant mob is.

BTW, i don't think it is the worse, i think it is a nice feature. If i just want to hack-n-slash, i don't want to waste time running everywhere searching for the right mob.

If you like it thats OK with me, but for people who like to explore and have meaningful quests it kills all of that aspect of the game.  If you just want to hack and slash perhaps and MMO|RPG| is not for you.  Maybe you are looking for Diablo 2.

When you read a quest like:

Habuka is spotted north west of Kemer Farm recently, after killing Habuka report to Shiow.

Question:

1. Where is Kemer Farm? It's not on map.

2. How far towards North West from Kemer Farm?

3. Who is Shiow and where?

WOW is unplayable without thottbot.

Players like you are ruining MMOGs. Try exploring a little.

I am surprised Thottbot is enough for you. Don't you need someone to hold your hand and show you exactly where to go?

The objective of quest most time are either to kill a number of mobs or deliver something or find a NPC or collecting stuffs etc, and the story makeup mostly are broken because it is not based on a novel like LOTRO. And the quest maker try not to tell you directly so sometimes, the hint is not enough then it became a puzzle.

As I know most players playing LOTRO have read the book so they enjoy the game more than others haven't read the book.

It is an art to display the text in a better way than force people to enjoy to read the text. If I am going to enjoy reading, I will read a book.

I recalled there was a chain quest in WOW leads you to a mountain. There was a small path, you need to walk on the ice and walk straight. I can tell you, no matter how clear Thottbot tells you how to do the quest, but without coord, you won't be able to find the spot. This chain quest must have someone to walk you through and tell you when to jump and how to use your keyboard + mouse.

I think there are plenty quests like that. And the downside is you won't be able to review the quest you have completed.

"Beer for the beer god!"

WoW unplayable without Thottbot? How on earth did we manage the quests in the beta then? Oh that's right. We actually went exploring. That's just sad, man.

On topic: Yes, I always read the questlines. I'm rather interested in the story, as to who, why and where. Makes the game an RPG, rather than an asian grindfest. Which brings me to the following: I don't read the questlogs in the asian games I've tried. They were always horribly spelled, and irritated me rather than interest me.

Don''t Panic!!!!

Unfortunately there really isn't any point in reading 90% of quest out there in any game. Most just hand out a kill count or collection number and mark a spot on the map. Whats there really to read? We don't have "quest" in the traditional sense, what we have in MMO's are "to do list".

Its not like the old days of EQ or AC when you had to figure it out yourself (locations and steps, who to talk to next) given back in the day sadist wrote most of those. They did a lot of crazy things like, while on the southern most tip of a landmass, say "to north of here look for my friend JoJo who can tell you the location of the...." with a full continent to guess where JoJo might be leaving the player little option but to go to online resources.

What we have are two extremes, to hard in the past and now, to easy.

Since most quest have zero dynamic impact you really have no motivation to get to involved with it in the first place, just kill your 10 rats and collect your copper pieces.

Gamers who use RMT are like athletes who use steroids.

Here is an example of a real quest in classic EQ, back before there were minimaps and arrows pointing the way, only a compass to guide you, back before there were stupid unrealistic floating icons above questgivers heads, back when NPC faction mattered to unlock or complete quests, back when exploration and effort was an expected and enjoyable part of playing and succeeding in MMOGs.

This is the quest to
