Even if you have no problem with the company developing the game, the game's development history should worry you. The DCUO development team has had at least four different lead designers and has been bleeding development team members from the beginning. The only real stablility the development of the game has had is that Jim Lee (a comic book artist) has been the art director for the game, and is supposedly doing some writing as well. As an extra added bonus, two of the former lead designers are the guy who came up with the NGE combat system for Star Wars Galaxies (Dan "Om Nom Nom" Rubenfield) and the former lead designer of Star Wars Galaxies that a large chunk of the folks who currently play SWG hate, Kai Steinmann (Helios). According to the rumor that has been posted to a couple gameing news sites (Gamasutra and Kotaku have posted it over a year ago), the game's creative direction is being directed by SOE's management, who vie the game as their potential flagship title, which has caused conflict with the folks on the development team, which in turn has cause a regular turnover of developers. The most likely result of the turnover in developers is that the game is going to be a mess.

Originally posted by Obee Former keyword former. Rubenfield will never again work for an established development house unless he funds it personally. Not only does half of the Veteran SWG community want to stomp a mud hole in his ass, many of his former coworkers would rather drink Bleach than be in the same room with him. The guys who are developing it now are some of the original CoH developers, as well as some of Arena.nets, and Biowares Talent. SOE is not steering the Creative direction of the game DC comics is, they will not under any circumstance let SOE fuck with their IP period. I think what should happen is folks should actually let the game come out before starting the hate machine...I know I know it's SOE the great Satan...anyway from what I have seen the game looks like a lot of fun. |

DCU looks very early. Will have to see how it turns out. Champions Online however has 2 MAJOR strikes against it. 1 - No Villains at launch. Big surprise that Cryptic didn't learn from their past mistakes. 2 - Jack Emmert. You people may think SOE is terrible but SOE doesn't have anything on Jack Emmert. His incompetence ruined CoH and it will ruin Champions. |

Ok a few points I read marvel comics growing up and always found DC comics to be corny but I'm fairly certain DC was in production before Marvel Comics online also you guys do realize SOE stands for SONY online entertainment highly doubtful this game will be on a 360 as such and though I plan to try out both Champions and DC don't you guys think it's a bit of a stretch to say that Chamions graphics are far superior to DC imo the cell shading on champions does not look so hot, I'm just wondering if comments about bad graphics have more to do with a dislike of SOE than the game itself. |

"Can you even create your own hero in this game? Champions was a big step forward because you can create your own hero and even customize the colors of the powers (assuming they stick to it this time). There will be no archetypes or predefined Classes. And how will PVP be? PVE is cool and all but that gets dull after 1 or 2 max level characters and devs never can keep up with the pace that players level. Champions appeal in letting us build our own heroes from scratch makes grinding an attractive option. At least I'm building my own hero from scratch. I'd rather do that then be a carbon copy of "Superman" like 5,000 others." Is there actually an MMO that you are forced to use the designers toons? I've never played one in any genre |

Nope, I actually happen to like Champions Graphics better, due to the fact that it IS cel shaded and, you know, it gives you that COMIC BOOK feel instead of a re-hash of "lets try and make it look photo-realistic" that a lot of companies like to throw out. Maybe it's just the geek in me, but I'd rather have my super hero actually look like he jumped out from a comic book, and not a clone model of CoH (yes, they look pretty much like they were a copy/paste models from CoH that they just changed the suits to match the DC heroes, well, all of them look like CoH clones except for Joker, but Joker doesn't look all that hot either, he looks like crap!) Edited to add: I actually do remember like 8 months back pulling off a couple of my own versions of Robin, Nightwing and Dick Tracy (I know he's not DC, still) and a couple more DC super heroes, and while comparing them to the DC models, the differences are minute (granted, I did give Robin a leather trench coat instead of a cape, because it just looked too cool to pass up over the stereotypical black/yellow cape) |
