I agree with the OP.

I have never been so mind numbingly bored in game as when I was in a raid. I never saw any cooperation either. What I saw was a few people barking orders and everybody else following like mindless zombies and hitting 1 or 2 spells when told to do so. It was like sitting behind the facade of an NPC it was so limiting and boring.

My best times in an MMO were with a small group of friends facing a mob or situation we shouldn't have been able to defeat and yet, somehow, we did. That's when you have some skill and teamwork involved. That's when fast thinking and cooperation can actually save the day.

Raids are so "by the book" that it's more like buying a new game along with the guidebook and following step by step how to complete the game. How is that challenging or even fun?

I don't mind if a game has raiding. I just want absolutely no part in it.  I think that raid gear should be used for raids and grouping gear used for grouping.

I always had a laugh at people raiding 7/7 for 5 hours and claiming they go out "often" to meet their "friends" at the bar...

If you raid in a MMO, it means you do not have a life outside of it, a human being simply doenst have enough time to do both. I know, i tried in both EQ and WoW before i understood...

EQ1 2000-2004. Hardcore raiding up and including PoP.
WoW 2005-2006. Hardcore lvling, few raids.
WAR - 2 weeks. Bored.

I'll give my reasons for completely not wanting to raid anymore in an MMO.

-It takes too much of my time.

-It sets a timetable on my playtime. (be on at XX.XX because that's when the raid starts)

-I can't do what I want in the game.

-People take the game much too serious.

-I don't like to use Vent.

-Too much drama.

-Playing becomes work, and I don't want that really.

Anyone else feel the same way?

It depends on what kind of group you're in.  Sometimes the raids I am in can be taken seriously, but other times it's just plain fun.  Whenever I go on a raid, my friends and I joke around and have fun.  Now, there will be some serious moments, but I personally enjoy the raiding since I have fun with other people while  doing it.

LOL @ OP

Those are the reasons I never started raiding in the first place.  :P

Well the problem with Raid gear used for raids and grouping gear used for grouping is that Raids are basicly large groups.

Also I am sorry you had a bad raiding guild.... Your second paragraph is exacly why I love raids, that is how I raided in EQ1.  Always doing something that we were told we could not do without more people.

My raiding guild in EQ1 only field 5 full groups of 6 which is a very small amount of players compared to what most used in EQ1.

Well you have no idea what your talking about again.  I was a hardcore raider in EQ1, I raided 5 nights aweek and somehow still found time to have a girlfriend and a life.  I would go to parties and the bar and just hang out with friends but I was still a raider.

Its really not hard to be both a raider and have a life.

I know I lived it, I raided in EQ1 and I still had a life, I raided in WoW and still had a life.... I am currently not playing any MMO and I still have a life.   You need to stop generalizing everyone because not everyone fits into your little groups you invent.

I see no reason why items dropped in raid encounters couldn't have bonuses attached that are only active in other raid encounters. But that's really another discussion entirely.

And just for the record - my raiding encounters were in EQ 1 as well, with more than 1 raiding guild.  Raiding is exactly why I lost interest in the game. I was so bored on one particular game that I faked a disconnect just to get out of it and logged back in an alt no one knew.

I like to think of my characters as heroes not soldiers.  Even an army of ants can bring down a strong target.

The more interesting question would be, why were more people grouping and doing dungeons in WoW than AoC for example?.

I answered that question so many times,

Reason 1 - WoW low-mid level dungeons were easier than AoC ones. Less stress, more instant gratification.

Reason 2 - WoW itemization was so much better that you cared about huning good equip. In AoC not so much.

Reason 3 - WoW happened in 2004, solo playing was needed but grouping in dungeons was still considered both the norm and kinda cool. Nowadays the often mentioned MMOPLayer Burnout kills it. People can still appreciate some group crawling but it better be a Free Looting Machine or they can't be bothered at all.
