Hey all...

I'm looking for a good MMORPG that will run on my craptop.  (Dell Inspiron 16000, Intel Pentium 1.79 GHz, 512 RAM, , ATI Mobility Radeon X300 w/129 megs of VRam, Windows XP SP2.  Old school is fine with me... my first MMORPG was Asheron's Call, and I LOVED it.  (I miss the sandbox feel of it, and the Vassal system was brilliant.  I have never figured out why no one has ever duplicated it.)

My "real" MMORPG life, at the moment, is spent in Vanguard and I love the depth of that.  But I'm starting a new job that is going to leave me with lots of time away from home, and I'm looking for something RP-friendly, engaging, and not to taxing on my poor old system.  Any suggestions?

You may try LOTRO . My laptop runs it fairly well with all graphics turned down. Its an excellent game as well for RP and fellowship

You might be able to manage World of Warcraft

I love LOTRO, but my system won't run it.  I've tried.

It does run WOW with no problem, but I have never played WOW and that's an odd point of pride for me... <grin>  I only know it will run because I lent the computer to my stepdaughter for a while, and she ran it fine.

Don't let "pride" stop you from playing WoW.  It's actually a very good game for what it does, which, incidentally is pretty much everything LoTRO does and more (the Tolkien lore notwithstanding, obviously).

If your willing to try a free to play game, Dream of Mirror Online (DOMO) is a fun, causal MMO.

Aeria games has a few more f2p offerings, but other then Domo, I have only played 12Sky (pvp heavy). Anyways, runs good on my sub 1GHz laptops.

If you feel like going old school, you should try Ultima Online.  I would suggest a private server as, in my experience, they are better ran and more fun.

If you dont feel like going that far back, you should try The Saga of Ryzom.  This may seem like an odd suggestion because this game is currently offline and will be restarted soon (thats all we know).  But when this game does come back online, you should be able to run it and it really is a great game.  It has that great sandbox feel that you loved in AC and it seems like a good choice for an old AC player. (including me).  I am just waiting for it to go back online and then maybe I will see you ingame.  Check the forums out at www.ryzom.com.

If you are letting pride avoiding you to play a solid game that will be able to be played on your laptop, then it is truly your loss; not blizzards'.

Although I don't play wow anymore because of a lack of endgame variety, I still highly recommend the game if you haven't tried it.  You should give it a shot.  There's a lot of good things in wow.  Heck, I used to spend lots of evenings just pvp'in the same old battlegrounds and had a blast.  :)  As long as you don't play five hours a night, wow can provide very long lasting entertainment, and it can run on a toaster.  Also note that if you like lotro, you will like wow.  They're virtually the same game, except wow is bigger, both in population and content.

I wonder if EQ2 (RP server) is maybe something to consider with that..Can't really say what the reqs are for running it.

You know when you play too much MMO's when your partners pants have become a rare drop.

he'll barely be able to run EQ2 one that laptop. And I am being very pessimistic when I say barely.

Should be a few that your laptop could run.  The ones that come to mind are EQ, AC, DAoC, AO and Horizons.

Thanks for the list.  I'm going to check out DOMO first, I think.

Oh, I should have been more clear about the not playing WOW thing.  It's not an anti-Blizzard attitude at all.  Rather, it's my uncomfortableness with competing against children in any game.  The thing I like about games like Vanguard, and about some of the older MMORPGs, is that in general the players are mostly late teens and older.  My sense is that in WOW, there are a lof of younger folk.

Now, I have nothing AGAINST children, I just don't think it's very gracious for a forty-something woman to compete with them.  That may make sense to no one but me, of course.  But, really, it's not a WOW-hater thing at all...

How about Wurm online. it hasd okay graphics is the only real sandbox out there (imo) you hand craft everything and the download is strait from site and on like 30-200mb PvP is fun and engaging everything is made by hand. get raw materials put them in oven combine then and you have an item.

It's java based and you'll need to pay premium for PvP and to get complete game. only 5 euros

Guild Wars? The client runs on fairly old PCs yet the graphics are beautiful.

I travel a lot and i've found that the best laptop MMO's are EVE Online, Guild Wars, and if you are a fan WoW.

This is not only because they run well, but because they all support short to long game sessions and i've found that I never have quite as much time to get immersed when i'm on my laptop.

The only game i've played that I really get into on laptop is FFXI with a controller.  Otherwise EVE or Guild Wars.

I play City of Villains on my laptop. Since the game is a few years old now the performance should be okay on a lower spec laptop and the game lends itself very nicely to casual play. I wouldn't even dream of trying Vanguard on a laptop...

This is true, I could run it on my fathers 4 years old crappy laptop, ran pretty nicely, only problem was that all of Ascalon was purple though
