Hey I really enjoyed the old SWG career system... sadly i didn't get into SWG until late after its released, and about a month before the controversial career system patch... (sucks cause i almost had my chars stats mastered and what not) anyways, i forgot all about that until now.
I realize that SWG might have been one of the most fun games I have played because of the career mastery their was and all that was around that was......unknown
I was wondering if there are any games that have a similar career mastery that are out, or that are coming out (i think Neocron had very similar but that game didn't last long)
or basically a game that has a career system that is completely customizable, where its possible that every character is unique... and where maybe you train skills by using them instead of by lvling up and and going to a trainer thx |

Imagine if they didn't bother with Jedi and focused on balancing professions and adding content, the game could have been soooo good but noooooooooo..... Jedi then JTLS then more jedi patches then CU and more Jedi patches then the NGE which was just a excuse for them to make Jedi a starting profession.
Frigging Jedi, Star Wars should have ended with Episode 3 with the Sith killing em all. |

Hmm, the closest thing I can think of would be the Matrix Online. There are other games that use skill trees such as World of Warcraft, Hellgate: London, Tabula Rasa, Age of Conan, and Mythos but they are all limited in that each "class" has a few trees you can work on that allow you to customize how your character is built. Whereas in Pre-CU SWG and Matrix Online there is no rigid class, but instead the trees you work on is what determines what your character is. They're all still very fun games, they just aren't quite as open ended as far as character development goes. |

EVE Online would be a good choice if you want a non-leveling skill based game. Especially if you want to focus on non-combat careers as it's probably the best out there at the moment. |

Originally posted by mbd1968 EVE's advancement sucks though. I don't know WTF the devs were on when they decided to gimp every person who didn't start playing on launch day. One of the dumbest decisions I've seen an MMO company make. And please don't lecture me on how a two month old character can still contribute to combat. Fact of the matter is that anyone who begins now is forever and permanently disadvantaged when it comes to accumulating skills. |

Apart from eve-online there is nothing along the lines of SWG pre-cu/pre-nge. The little skill trees that wow and the like have do not even come close the the diversity that old swg had once had. There are some coming in the relatively near future that claim to have open ended skill based leveling systems but until they are released and we can see for ourselves I wouldn't hold my breath. Your best bet is waiting for that which can not be named. |

Have you given DAoC a try? It might be old, and it might be fantasy, but they have a similar form of advancement as well. Granted you can't switch careers midstream like SWG, but the career advancement is similar in some respects. |
