WoW is by no means the best MMORPG out there. Just has the most subs.

But really it doesn't make sense, it's got 10 mill subs, millions more than any other game, and it's ranked at some 20th or so?

Again, the popularity of a game does not mean that its a good game. Also, for every WoW fanboi out on this site, there is always people bashing WoW. Please don't base ANY thoughts about a game on the rankings on this site. Honestly they are corrupted by multiple accounts that just vote to bring up the hype or popularity of a game or bring it down.

But what makes a good game? That's very subjective, as far as I can see from these forums.

To me it seems that this site is somekind of hate site or something, as far as the users go. It's just not representative.

I'm not defending WoW, I'm just questioning the ranking list. Don't really know how to improve it though.

lots of people loved michael jackson, brittany spears, and um, clay aiken in their day....

what they produced was pop music -- something to attract the mindless masses and the little kiddies.

would those people go someplace and voice their opinions?  or just buy up the pop crap and enjoy it?

why would the online pop fans do any differently?

Because that is a subjective decision.

The only way we can measure, from a group, wether it is good or not, is if it's popular or not.

Not to make this into a political thread, but that's the way politics works - we can't decide which political direction is best, so we let the masses decide. The political group with most popularity gets to run the show. Or that's the way it works with democrazy anyway (which has come in place because it's more popluar than dictatorship )

So popularity is the only way to make your mind up based on others choice - ofc if you want to make your own mind up you have to try all the games listed. If not you're still just listening to other people to a more or less degree.

So that's why I'm questioning the list, you could very well say that WoW is a McDonalds, but in RL the quality restaurants are more expensive - most of the games don't charge you more than WoW, in fact they are cheaper...

Two reasons:

1.  The vast majority of people who like WoW are not likely to frequent a site like this -- this site is mostly frequented by malcontents (myself included) looking for something different.

2.  WoW is actually cheaper, in a sense, based on its easy hardware requirements.  Again, the majority of people that are playing WoW simply because they can play it on their crappy computers are not likely to be so into computer games that they would spend even more time surfing MMORPG.com.  If they were that dedicated to gaming, they'd dedicate more of their income to upgrading their hardware.

1. That's what makes me questioning the ranking.

2. both Anarchy online and Ultima Online are ranked higher, one is cheaper than WoW, and the other is for free, and they can both run on cheaper machines, or at least same quality machines.

And also, alot of the games have adjustable video settings, so you could play all of them on a laptop, but you'd get really bad visuals though, but still playable

I have played wow for over 2+1/2 years now,

yes it can have a good community in the game
the content was ok when leveling.
the grouping and raiding used to be fun.

but when you get to the max level the amount of content is quite disappointing and boring.

solo play is basically doing the daily quests day in day out
PvP well is PvP - can be fun or not depends :P
and raiding is slightly strict in most places since their expansion.

but with the lack of content not many people will rate it as good now as it used to be as it's the same thing all over again..

i guessing then the expansion comes out the rating will go up with the new features they are going to implement in the game

to see thw wax covered imp sitting on it's own is an occasion to be proud of

Its because Ultima Online was a breakthrough in the genre. It was the first massively successful MMO, and had such a unique, innovative, and ahead of its time feature list, that no game has come out since to match it. Darkfall is the closest, but its not out yet. Anarchy Online.. probably because it was another of the pioneer MMOs.

MMORPGs don't harm kids. Stupid harms kids.

Because there are ~20 games that are better than WoW?

Because this is a site frequented by people who play MMO's a lot.

We are a bit more discriminate in our taste and rankings.  We expect something different from a game in what we consider our favorite genre.

A lot of ppl hate wow. The rating is user vote based.

Last time i checked Lotro was "number one". Wow has subs but crappy graphics by today's standard. Also leveling is ridiculously easy 1-60. These are just 2 things that won't appeal to everyone.
