Yes, that's what it looks like, get a shield and gimp you abilites, that will surely help the group . Reminds me of my time tanking in Shadowbane, most everyone went with a defensive tank with maxed Con/HP, they where just really gim´py at doing anything else, where as a friend of mine, my brother and me, specialized in offensive tanks, with maxed strength, by the time gimpy Con based tanks got us to around 1/4 HP of damage, our superior combat ability had already whittled them to death.

I'll rather have a guy that can pull his weight around, than a guy whose whole claim to fame, is that he dies after everyone else, while at the same time failing to kill any of the other guys.

this game will be twice as elitest as wow ever was because its a harder game than wow was and has gamers comming from older games than wow. so your basic kid mindset of "yay I wanna tank with a 2hander" will get you booted from a party. I dont know why they even put hybrids in the ga,me after we saw what happened in daoc.

and all the tanks can use 2h and the tanks can use shield.

this game has collision detection and abilities for tanks to take hits for their partners.....

so just like daoc.. the tank you cant kill can keep the caster alive, thus making the tank the most important part of your pvp group... just like daoc.

didnt you guys watch ANY of the old nolby pride videos from daoc? go find them right this instant so you know what mythic has in mind

 Bear in mind that WAR stresses RvR more than PvE, which is an important consideration. Also bear in mind that a lot of the PvE (though certainly not all of it) does not demand uber groups to be successful in.

I mention RvR because shields are almost always not as useful in PvP as they are in PvE simply because human players are not stupid and it is often better to deal extra damage, thereby killing foes faster,  than to take less damage, which usually means foes live longer since you are outputting less damage, too. Human players also often make it a point to avoid trying to physically damage the plated warrior with a shield since it is inefficient, so you obsolete your own role by becoming too good at it.

I mean, in WoW, when I can, who do you think I target when I play melee, all else being equal? The flimsy clothies! I leave tanks alone unless there is a good reason to not do so, since they are better dealt with by casters who do not have massive percentages of their damage mitigated.

Of course, with certain abilities that soak damage from teammates, mitigation can and will be great in RvR, but I think you will find bringing a 2H sword into RvR as a tank will not get you ridiculed.

In terms of PvE, not only is a lot of the PvE geared for non-uber groups (PQs, for one), tanks also bring more to groups than raw mitigation in WAR. You will not want a Knight of the Blazing Sun just because you can hide behind his shield, but because he can do other beneficial things.

In the end, I think WAR will be rather generous as to what is viable, so join me as a Knight of the Blazing Sun and have fun with your flamberge.

So your kid mindset of "Im the uber Raider! Why hasnt our tank sword and shield? find a new one plz!" I will boot you from my party.

I dont mean to be a jerk here, but this is one of the things I really starting to hate in MMOs.

Its a harder game lol???. Get a grip man.  Its not harder, the combat is badly designed thats why u think its harder.  It is in no way harder than wow or any other mmo.  Infact from my experience form beta the comabt is one of the many things that let the game down at present.

I havnt met anyone who wants to tank with a 2h hander ever, unless the instance is very easy.  So your idea of kids mindset of 2h tanking is just pure bullshit.   Even if you could tank 2h, its another option that is viable which isnt a bad thing. Get a grip please.

Anyone can be viable in a group you just have to accept you may not be the main tank.  The main tank is shield based,  simple as that.  Now if a 2h complains about their roll in the group that their own problem for refusing to accept the roll they gave themselves by choosing 2h over 1h and shield combo.  Every group will have certain spots for certain people from ones thta are needed to a few extra's that can help but aren't based on key elements of the group.  A 2h just has to accept they are not the main tank and fill in as a helper roll in the group.  There will be for sure some people who try and use a 2h as the main tank,  hoping the tank  can last long enough with good healers or heavily damaged based group.  In DAOC beta I used a 2h warrior as the group's main tank and worked well enough as one.  In live I had a Kobold Warrior while at the low and medium levels he was a weaker hitter,  His agility made up for that as a tank carrying a large shield allowing him to block 3 targets at once making him a master at defense for the group as he spammed blocks.  Either way can work if you hae a group who knows what they doing and you accept the roll in the group you are given.

in normal grouping in wow My holy pali mostly had a ms war tank and untill heroics ... and once we got geared enough even some herics he would tank while wielding a 2h weapon

Age of Conan is almost a direct WoW-clone, but saves face by adding some new end-game activities in the form of player-owned cities and border kingdom PvP. AoC's combat is pretty standard, with just a bit more clicking. AoC is taking the WoW base, copying it whole-sale, and fluffing the fringes to make it feel unique.

WAR is half a WoW-clone, which really isn't a clone at all. WAR will have a PvE end game, but the means of getting there will be drastically more dynamic than what is found in WoW. On top of this, WAR is shaping up to be a far deeper and more feature-rich game than WoW will ever be. WAR is taking the WoW base and piling on the goodness.
