What is being done to localize Perfect World International for a North American audience?

Perfect World International

An immense amount of work is being done to localize Perfect World International for the English speaking audience. I’ve seen a lot of Free to Play games out there that just have flat out horrible localization, I’m sure you have as well. In fact, so many Free to Play games exhibit this unfortunate trait that it’s developed into a full blown stigma within the industry. We’re aiming to break that mold and provide an experience where the game’s text accents your experience, rather than detract from it.

And yet, the in game text has the worst Engrish I have ever read in any game. Ever. I hope that that is a work in progress, because some of the dialogues I couldnt even understand. And Im pretty good at reading through typos.

The version they are talking about is not even out yet.  You are playing the Malaysian version. A completely unrelated version.

This is not that tricky a concept, people.  Most other free MMORPGs are like this as well.  They have versions for specific countries (some of which happen to be in English) and then a dedicated one in NA.

The main company licenses the game out to various other companies all over the world.  Each of these licensees has no relation to the other licensees.

WOW...that's odd.  I don't remember anyone saying we WERE playing the version they're talking about.  We're just discussing the game and it's various pros and cons as it is NOW.   Is THAT hard to figure out?

Playing: WoW, EQ2, EVE, played WAR through the first month, presently in closed beta two upcoming MMOs, really looking forward to The Agency, Runes of Magic, Aion and TCoS releases. Still debating a return to Vanguard. I also play FPS games, such as Unreal 3 and Painkiller, and some single player games like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. I'm addicted.

the 2 games that the companies ruined that ive played are star wars and mabagoni and mobagoni

so many comments from people who realy didnt even play the game.

first play the malasian/en version not the chinese one those are 2 diffent cleints. the malay oen u dont need a passport number.

next the reason they didnt patch PW for 6 months is cause nothing was broken so better to focus on adding stuff like houseing and such.

on the gms ive seen a few in my on and off play

only thing i hate about PW is it seems kinda slow and also as last i played the bot reporting system was down adn they also limit u to 3 reports per day

on another note i would rather put 15$ in PW each month than a game like wow

Forum Poll

would u spend your wow sub in PW item mall

yes
no
hell yes this game doesnt babysit u like wow
no i have tohave someone baby sit me with patches and boring gameplay while stealing my money

First of all, Mr. Smartybritches, I AM playing (AND talking about) the Malaysian version, and yes it DOES ask for your passport number when you register.

Secondly, the people that said to make up numbers were correct....the site accepts that when you register.

Thirdly, comparing ANY game to WoW is ignorant.  All games have differences meant to make different personality types and play-styles HAPPY.  Just play whatever game you LIKE.  Not all games will please ALL people.

Lastly.....I didn't BUY GOLD.  I bought a cubicard from Offgamers, and frankly....their service just SUCKS.  To their credit, they DID refund my money, or my PayPal account at least SAYS they did, although it's not hit my bank account yet.

Priestess of the Church of the Painful Truth :3

I bought from that 1asiapworld. Seems pretty legit so far, atleast they are using paypal, and you dont have to go through that rather shady system that the cubinet site is using...

And yes, I was talking about the Malaysia game when I was referring to the horrendous translations...

Ok, I bought a cubicard, and "topped-up" using the cubinet site, how do I get the cash shop money in the game? O.o

Ok figured it out... their cash shop is like trying to do your taxes... very loopy and arcane. >.> Not fun at all.

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to chime in and make sure this is clear.  The version of Perfect World that will be releasing in the US this Fall is entirely separate from Perfect World (Malaysia).

Perfect World International WILL NOT require you to submit your passport number, social security number, or ANY number associated with your identity.

Our version of Perfect World will be 100% freshly localized for the US.

Wow, you guys think they actually want your passport? I see they ask for identity card/passport number, and having lived overseas many years, this is just a poor translation at getting a point across. They are saying to provide them with ANY number that you will be able to remember for account verification purposes. Take the tinfoil hats off for a moment and think logically, you can put your library card number in there if you want. Are you afraid the communist terrorists will take over America with that?

Did anyone SAY they were afraid they were going to "take over America?"  No, I don't think so.  Don't be moronic.  There's NOTHING wrong with safeguarding your financial information or identity online, if you feel so inclined.  As a matter of fact, most legal authorities will firmly suggest you do so.  This is not a "tinfoil hat" sort of paranoia, being that identities are stolen DAILY.

To further complicate matters, Malaysia is one of the VERY well known countries from which many spammers and phishing scams originate.  I could probably literally go back and count the "request for bank information" emails and "I've inherited money that I want you to keep safe for me" emails, that I have received from.....guess where?  MALAYSIA.

Now, to address your THEORY that passport does not mean passport.  To what foreign country have you traveled lately where the word "passport" was not widely understood to BE the English translation of the word passport?  And if you use the word "passport" combined with the word "VISA" I suppose you think other countries think you mean your library card number combined with your credit card number?  The word "passport" is a pretty broadly understood term between countries.  If they wanted another password or PIN number, so to speak, don't you THINK they would have used one of those words rather than "passport?"  Seriously now.  Did you speak to the site owners to determine that this was just a "bad translation" or are you an expert in bad Asian/English (affectionately referred to as Engrish) translations?

There is no logical REASON to assume that a word means anything other than what is stated.

Incidentally....did you bother to read the thread, or did you just stop at the first mention of a flawed registration process?  I think everyone in the thread has moved on from that now.
