If you stare into the Abyss long enough the Abyss stares back at you. - Friedrich Nietzsche |
Unfortunately, I had started out on the wrong foot in Vanguard. I fondly remembered my Ogre ShadowKnight from my days in EQ, so the first character I created in VG was an Orc Dread Knight. Got him up to lvl 9 before succumbing to boredom and frustration. Next was a Dark Elf Necromancer to lvl 6 before getting bored, but I did dabble in crafting a bit on this character, and I have to say, it was pretty interesting. A lot more complex than I had expected, and the little twists of complications really added to the appeal. Harvesting was nice as well, the animations were pretty well done. Next, I toyed with a cleric and a bard, but quickly gave up on both. At around this point, I had been reading about tweaks to improve the game's graphics and/or performance, and tried a few changes here and there. Little did I know what a disaster this was going to turn out to be for me. While the occasional crash happened here and there, it was but a mere shadow of what was to come. Feeling quite disillusioned with the game at this point, I took a break for an evening, and decided to try out a sorcerer the next day. Finally, a class that just fit my playstyle. While the spell animations left a bit to be desired, the abilities just had a nice flow for me. That was, when I was able to play for longer than 5 minutes at a time due to crashing, which wasn't often. And by often, I mean I crashed every 5 minutes. Hard crashes. Rebooting the PC crashes. Blue screen crashes. I cannot recall a time when my PC ever crashed this much since the days of Windows 95... And I wont even mention all the other annoying graphical problems. After continually restarting, and usually logging back in at some alter... I was nearly at the point of no return. I figured $4 was way too much to pay for this steaming pile of bug infested drek. In desperation, I asked in region chat if anyone had some tips on how to solve my crashing. One guy was nice enough to answer, and suggested to default all my settings and then reboot. Lo and behold... 4 levels later and I have not crashed. No graphical glitching and fps is quite acceptable. Now at lvl 10 with my sorcerer, and I have to admit, I'm having a good time. My opinion of the game turned around 180 degrees. Looking forward to logging in again.... for now ;). |

Originally posted by Perception wow I can't imagine getting that kind of problem in this day and age of Vanguard. I ran an average computer last year when the game came out and ran it fine. Crashed now and again, but all and all it was alright. I quit, came back a month ago and I can max everything out and run without any lag at all using the same system. I can't imagine you getting this many issues. There aren't even that many bugs left to run into! But, glad you're enjoying the game! |

Yep I have had no such problems in the game with crashes etc,I do have a tip for you m8 and this 1 will improve the graphics with no cost to preformance or crashes, when you log in do /setfog 100000 and then enter it really does improve it and you will notice a difference,If you were to say what you were looking for in a class then some ppl will advise,I am really enjoying my shammy,he solo's well and is also good in groups but be warned he can take alot of work on multiple mobs but then you are always busy, which I enjoy :) All the best in game and hope you continue to enjoy :) |

Not really sure what was causing your crashes but I havent seen that in VG since beta. Just out of curiosity when you first started the game and it asks if you want to compile your files (cant remember the exact name) because this will supposedly improve performance it doesnt. I was having some laggy loads when I was talking to a long time player and he asked if I did the compile, when I said yes, he said exit the game clear all cache files and reboot and this time do not compile the files. HUGE difference this made for me. The compiling was supposed to improve performance, however it actually did the opposite. Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there, |

I fear suggesting this, but have you made sure that your DirectX, video card, sound card drivers are updated?? This is a fairly sure way to get that kind of crashing to occur. If using onboard audio, make sure that in the VG settings, you are using the generic audio device. I'm not confident that VG has optimized audio in the game yet, to many other priorities. Maybe list your comp specs to see if anyone else has had the same issues with similar equipment. Glad you are enjoying it now. Peace!! |

Uh, you wont get the core of the class before level 15 to 20, really. The Orc Dread Knight, for example, is a great solist, even if I have to say that, in Vanguard, Tanks seem to be very hard to play (in group, not solo!), and to be very gear dependent. The very best tanks seem to stick to the mob like glue, you dont have to bother about them. But getting to that point... I choosed the best combo of classes I know of for aggro control (Lesser Giant Warrior) and I still have a ton of trouble to keep aggro. Even a lesser level BM could routinely take aggro away from me, it was very annoying.

You said you had started having problems when you started to tweak the system. A lot of the tweaks you might have read about where probably left over from the bad old days right after launch. Many of those tweaks are no longer valid, or even worse, might be causing your problems. I would suggest going into your vanguard directory and renaming your vgclient.ini file. When you start up vanguard it wont find your ini file and create a new default one. See if you have problems with default settings. If not you can play wiht the settings via the game settings menu. If you are manually changing values in the vgclient.ini file then you do so at your own risk.
oh yeah.. Xeth is the best server

You can only transfer characters out of the pvp server and not in. There's always @sshats when there's pvp, always have and always been that way. "Good and evil, you cannot have one without the other." -- Merlin from the movie Excalibur |

Originally posted by Perception I just want to mention briefly that I have been back to Vanguard after a year's absence, have noticed that the game plays much better...to the point I can pay attention to the immersion, the environ ...the quests much more than worrying about is my computer going to ctd in the next hour. I have been back for about 6 days now, and am surprised to find...that there is not one..not one crash to desktop yet. And ..I didn't think it was possible ..but somehow the overall graphics look improved. I still don't like that goofy jump animation and am hoping that when they bring in the new character models ( I hear that Silius has stated that this project is about half complete so far) that they also work on the character animations at the same time. Overall ...however my return to Vanguard has been a rather pleasant one in comparison to all the hullabaloo that went on prior to release and post release. I admit I don't trust SOE...and have been grudgingly giving them kudos thus far for a job well done. Hopefully they will keep at it ..and VG will finally become what it was meant to be...a huge open massively multiplayer game with all the content one could ever hope for. NB: I read your post and wanted to ask...do you have an NVIDIA vid card? With Nvidia..well I am sure most folks know this..but just in case, they bring out new drivers every couple months...so its best if you do upgrade soon as you are aware of it. The wrong video drivers have caused me blue screens of death before...and its danged scarey lol. Please folks make sure you have your drivers updated for your hardware...and enjoy your gaming whatever game it happens to be! PS: My friends and I are on Seradon....seem to be seeing new faces each and every day, along with a few ex beta testers I have encountered. Community is nice and we have fun together over General chat. Come join us for a looksee..and don't be afraid to ask newbie questions, lots of people have the answers you need. :) Cend |

I think that the most needed feature VG needs is alternate character customisation, i hear this maybe in GU6?!? |

A couple more levels under my belt, and a couple more comments...
1. No fishing... *sigh*. Guess I can live with it, but that was a disappointment. 2. Holy cow there are a lot of quests. Some are repetitive, some are downright broken, but there are just oodles of them. There are a lot of quest hubs as well, and its a bit more open than I'm used to, as far as where to go. Not a bad thing, just a bit daunting for someone as indecisive as me ;). 3. Not actually the fault of the game, but there doesn't seem to be much of a web community. No quest or item databases that are worth bothering with so far. I always liked to look for upgrades and quests online, but have not had any luck. 4. I cant quite get a handle on the quest tracking interface. I like to get multiple quests at once, and its nice to have the little dots show up on my minimap of where to go, but often times they disappear randomly, upon logout, or if I happen upon another quest item. If I stick to one quest at a time, it usually works ok. 5. So far, no groups =(. Maybe its just lower levels... hopefully there will be more grouping when I hit 20 or so.
Oh, and for anyone who cares, I'm Ruprekt on... Seradon? I think thats the server name. |

I just joined VG myself. Maybe I should try a sorcerer too, as I'm a little bored already with my newbie bard. I haven't seen any crashes, even after a few hours of playing. Do you know what settings caused the crashes? I likely won't tweak the settings anymore as I'm getting good visuals and decent framerates.
