Let's hope Bioware can cook something up and get rid of the fantasy for awhile.

Well, orcs and elves style doesn't necessarily make it an bad game and just because you have the basic orcs and elves doesn't mean you have to basic pre-set lore that comes with them. Do agree that most orc and elves type of mmo's don't really do that they are not being creative enough with their lore and just re-use the old standard which is over used and pretty much everyone is done with it.
There are actually quite a lot of other themed mmo's around EVE, WoW, upcoming warhammer and Aion.
Something I would like to see is an good well funded p2p sandbox mmo based on Chinese or Japanese history. There are plenty of these games around but they are all free to play with item malls and you can easily see these games are not that well made and very repetitive. The Chinese and Japanese culture and history make for some great lore and could turn out very interesting if someone would put some efford and money in to it and not focus on just the asian market.
I do agree with an post here that an game like mass effect makes for some great material to make an mmo out of. I mean the game is great if it had normal multiplayer it would be godlike if it was an mmo it would be beyond godlike and probably an all time best seller if they did it right.

i must agree I am very tired of high fantasy based MMO's they are done to death. but there is very little choices out there. Id love to get my hands on a decent to superb Cyberpunk or scifi MMO. I liked eve but got deathly boring trying to mine, and kill rats (grind anyone??) but the social aspects to the pvp were amazing, but just couldnt sit there for hours on end hunting rats, or miningm y ass off.
i hope they change the game a bit to involve some questing/corp jobs etc. so there is some fun, some immersiaon in the game. but oh well, we can hope cant we? for a good scifi MMO? there are a few Im interested in mind coming out 2009/2010+ but thats a good wait. and another im working on a dsytopian Cyberpunk MMO, but thats on as a side project with some friends sand will need alot of funding to get it off the ground, but thats more work than anything lol. oh well lets hope the industry takes heed and start pumping out some decent scifi/cyberpunk MMO's. |

Personally, I'm tired of medieval fantasy MMOs. There are way to many of those and even more on the horizon. Now a scifi MMO, like Mass Effect, I can really get into. I don't particularly share the OP's hate towards elves and orcs, and Warhammer 40K is one of the games I'm waiting for. |

I don't mind Orcs and Elves so long as the story and game are intriguing. Ultimately Orcs and Elves merely fill roles. If they used aliens, it would potentially amount to the same thing. This Species vs This Species. |

Sorta agree with OP yet only half way I believe it's the quality of the game that will get most people to play. Lets say for instance a fantasy based MMO goes live next year - was a secret and no one knew about. No anticipation...nothing... It turns about to be a great game in all aspects. 99% of people will play it - if it's enjoyable - it will have longevity, that's all - fantasy-based or not. But it is hard to please the masses. MMO's are mostly a fantasy based genre - with a little sci-fi mixed in. Other genres will be too much of a risk i think. Ideas are great - but the realities i think would be harsh. I think most of us come from fantasy based MMO's for me it was EQ1 - and it has been said too many times. Nothing is like the first one. The platform has become saturated. So for me, really doesnt matter if a game has orcs, elves or not. I dont even care if it has just one race. Take AoC as an example - just on races - nothing else. They are getting slammed in all forums for only having the human race. No beast races, no 5 foot frogs, no wolves, rats, cat people, no orcs, ogres, Just the human race from different parts of the world. But it is keeping true to Howard's books. I dont know - its hard to please everyone I guess. So if they give in to half the p | |
