Been reading a few topics about sandbox/linearity etc. I'm not a fan of either extreme but I did have a few thoughts and queries over them, since I've not really followed the whole MMO trend for a while...

Is there an MMO with the following:

1) Moderate control of your character's combat skills - I.e. you can learn to use swords/bows/magic as you wish maybe even mix and match? (I threw this question up before a got hit with a "Lol you just want a god-mode! ¬_¬)

2) A valued crafting system - I've always loved the idea of a crafting system but I've never seen it maintained with any value. Blacksmithing for example never seems to work very well in the long term, either drops are better options or the whole system gets fudged up.

3) No forced-grouping content / No favourism of item drops for groups/soloers - I never agreed with either system being favoured. Personally I solo a lot more than I ever team but I dislike the idea of being forced into a team, particulary better drops going to those team areas. I'm not in favour of abolishing the whole thing though.

The question is in reference to the newer games on the market mind. I think I'm probably at fault for expecting a bit too much, my mate got me hooked onto Runescape relatively early in it's 2D classic development stages which, probably shaped my expectations (free form combat, free form crafting an extreme hatred for grind! heh...)

Alas, I'm thinking it's a futile quest?

Sounds like Champions online is right up your ally. Take a look at there website. When it comes out definitely look into it. you never have to group but you are more then welcome to in CO. You also able to customize your char to almost anything you want. ...Now this game is set in a more modern time and you play a super hero but you can use swords and bows if you want to .

Once again take a look, read there fourms.

Good luck on you quest i hoped this helps you in the near future

Yeah I've been watching Champions Online very closely since I meddled with City of Heroes, I have my gripes on that game personally that I think Champions might be able to sort out.

Aion sounds cool but the PVP-end-game-rewards/raiding system puts me off and Mortal's PvP-favoured. Still some interesting ideas there though. =)

They're just spouting random games.

Now, what YOU want is a free pre-Renaissance Ultima Online shard or pre-NGE Star Wars Galaxies. xD

Both of which are pretty discouraged on these boards, especially the idea of the SWGEMU.

I'd just want to echo the OP's desire for a good (read: not DDO) multiclassing MMO. I played a MUD going on 15 years ago now that was multiclass based and it's still my favorite system ever.

Eve does multiclassing in effect, and it fits your list of requirements other than the implied fantasy setting in #1. It is mostly PVP based, and an extreme sandbox though.

hmm Yeah, perhaps I should have mentioned that while I don't mind PVP systems I tend to follow the belief they should be seperated. Darkfall et al isn't my sort of game I don't enjoy griefer-fests of FFA all-loot pvping.

EVE's been on my mind for a long time, it's certainly an interesting concept though I'm skeptical of the time based level system.

EVE's timebased system works great for casual gamers, if you know you won't get much gametime during the week and are more of a weekend player, and you take track of your skill training times, you can log in for 30secs in a morning and set qa specific 8-9hr training off then go to work. when you come home you can either play for a bit or again log on and change your skill training. You can level the playing field without even playing th game... Also, if you're a researcher or crafter, you can set your crafting off and come home to discover your hanger full of bpc's or items to sell.

Eve would be a lot more fun if the combat wasn't so dull.
