So I'm considering playing EVE again after a rather long (bit under 2 years) time of inactivity. The main reason I stopped playing was the terrible lag during even a modest sized PvP battle. The other reason, sort of ties into the first, was the gate camp based PvP. I know there are other kinds of that seemed to be the primary form of PvP happening. However I imagine the all gate camping would have bothered me less if I wasn't precluded from fighting in the battle due to the severe lag.
As i know many changes and updates have been made during my time away I was wondering if the lag in largish PvP battles is better now (for someone in, say, the eastern US)? And is gate camping is the PvP norm?
Thanks in advance. |

Large scale fleet battles are still laggy unfortunately, its an uphill battle unfortunately but it is something they are working on and there is supposed to be some fancy new hardware coming later this year I believe. As far as gate camp based pvp goes, well it still exists obviously as alliances like to keep control over their territory and the entry points into low sec and null sec space will be camped by pirates. Now having said that there is really good small group pvp with little lag to be had with the right corps and alliances in the right ares. On top of that faction warfare is coming in the next expansion this summer so really soon which will cater more to the small scale pvp fans. Its up on the test server right now and there are devblogs about it. Go check it out. |

Fleet Battles - They are still laggy as each time CCP improves performance the palyers just pile on more ships till things lag again [main reason i avoid those battles].
Gate camps - they still happen a lot in low sec and 0.0. However the lag is a lot better in fact in most camps ive 'experienced' there was very little if any lag to be seen. Also you can now warp upto 0km to a gate which helps in empire space a lot, of course in 0.0 you do get warp disruptor bubbles which negate this so be carefull in 0.0. |

Thanks again for the responses. It's too bad about the lag but I guess that's just the current reality with a bunch of players in one area all on the same giant server thousands of miles away.
However, the new factional warfare does look really interesting since it does seem to focus of smaller non gate camping based PvP, which is the kind of thing I was hoping for. The ability to warp to 0km also sounds like a positive change. I remember hearing rumors of this before I left, and people grumbling about it would ruin the game. Clearly that's not the case.
By the way, are there any other major changes in the last 2ish years that a returning player might want to know?

Jump to 0 was a great idea and really was just logical. Personally from a gameplay standpoint id prefer not to have it because it does make avoiding combat easy but at the same time everyone already did warp to 0 with instajump bookmarks anyways. Eliminating the need for these bookmarks was a big relief on server load. It is too bad that large scale fleet battles are laggy but that is an unfortunate limitation the current internet. When I say large scale I am talking atleast 100 ships or more total, I guess there's a reason even Blizzard allows only 40 vs 40 in AV. It doesn't matter how much money you have to throw at the problem when the hardware and infrastructure just is not there. |

Well they didn't just ditch the bookmark system, just removed the need for instajump / instadock bookmarks and relieving a huge load on the database server with all the copying of bookmarks what was being done. I had around 500 or so instajumps in my bookmarks list and I had a small set. I knew plenty of people with thousands upon thousands of insta bookmarks. I'm sure you didn't mean it in terms of eliminating bookmarks all together, i'm just silly anal about things sometimes |
